Dec. 17, 2014 Volume 15, Number 51 Mattawa, WA 99349 Christmas Eve service MAN THE Wednesday MATTAWA AREA NEWS WJH serious about stopping bullying There will be a Community Christmas Eve Service on Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. The service is hosted by Riverside Presbyterian Church (Riverside Community Church). Leaders and members from Grace Lutheran Church and Saddle Mountain Bible Church will also be participating. Everyone in the area is invited to come and celebrate Christmas together. There will be singing and music, and the lighting of candles and worship of the birth of Jesus Christ. For more information, contact Pastor Dennis Evans, of the Riverside church, at 932-7393, or your usual contacts with the other churches. Mattawa Soccer benefits Mattawa Food Bank The Mattawa Soccer League charged admission to their championship game earlier this year and it was all for a good cause. Entry fee was two dollars or one dollar and two items of canned goods. The Mattawa Food Bank was the recipient of the money and food. All the canned goods were donated to the food bank and the cash, after fees, was used to purchase food. Board members, Emilio Mancinez, Carmelo Perez and Oscar Perdomo, purchased food with the $490 that was donated and gave it to the food bank. “The league strives to build community by offering opportunities for young people to use their free time in healthy ways,” said Perdomo, one of the volunteer board members. Right now the league is working on developing soccer fields. They currently pay for use at the school and use donated fields at the Our Lady of the Desert Catholic Church. The City of Mattawa does not have a soccer field. CBHA Joins in Christmas Giving Employees at Columbia Basin Health Association (CBHA) clinics in Othello, Mattawa, and Connell are in the Christmas spirit. “We do this every year,” said Leo Gaeta, Director of Programs. The group puts up a Giving Tree the first week of December and decorates it with children’s name tags. Employees select a name and buy that child a gift. Othello, Mattawa and Connell, like many communities nationwide, sponsor events and work together in their individual communities to help provide holiday cheer. Churches, civic organizations and clubs, school organizations and the like all do their part to raise funds and provide food, clothing and toys. Their efforts often are funneled into the local fire departments who deliver the Christmas baskets. “CBHA is proud to have clinics in each of these communities,” Gaeta said. “We want to do our part in helping everyone have a happy holiday season.” CBHA employees Martha Mabry and Flavia Lauriano place their gifts under the Giving Tree. photo supplied Wahluke Junior High anti-bullying essay winners are: sixth graders Jorge Rangel and Alazay Fayard; school counselor Mrs. Powell is pictured center; eighth graders Adilene Sandoval and Martin Martinez; seventh graders Jennifer Nazario and Mark Magdaleno. photo supplied Did you know that over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year? The Wahluke Junior High takes bullying seriously and spent the month of October focusing on stopping the problem. October was national bullying prevention month at WJH. School leaders said, “In our efforts to take a stand against bullying we had a school-wide assembly and did positive activities throughout the month to improve our school climate and show kids the importance of taking a stand.” Along with activities focused on learning about and stopping bullying, students competed in a bullying essay/poem contest. Eighth grade Adilene Sandoval’s poem was selected as the winner with a moving poem, Dry Petals. Bball working to hit shots and post wins Page 2, Mattawa Area News, Dec. 17, 2014 Strictly Joyce By Joyce Edie Team has busy schedule It’s Christmas holiday time here at the paper. We (mostly me) will be off for two weeks and I am excited. We have a holiday concert, traditional Christmas goings on, maybe a short trip or two and then New Years with all of us. And I have many things I must still do. There’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Christmas Story” and all the Hallmark goodies I have recorded. Lots to do. So if you are a Christian, should you even celebrate Christmas? Is Christmas just commercial or is there still meaning buried underneath a gift laden tree? With all the horror we see, are there good people left or is it all now a mockery? I know there are faith-based people who won’t celebrate Christmas because it has turned into gift giving. I ask what is wrong with that? Giving gifts is showing generosity, love, care. I think that is what Christ showed when He came down and was the greatest gift of all. Give more gifts, be more generous, stimulate the economy. Seems like all those are positive things that aren’t in conflict with Christ’s message. So what do most people believe? According to a Pew Poll here’s what Americans say. Two of the main results show 73 percent believe Jesus is who He said He is. And 65 percent believe in all the elements of the birth of Jesus as recorded in the Bible. I’m encouraged by this. It means most people have faith and hope and probably more love than hate. If you aren’t familiar with the Christmas story, here’s a touch of what all the excitement is about. “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” National Influenza Vaccination Week National Influenza Vaccination Week GET YOU FLU SHOTS NOW! Four of the eight Warriors who went to the tourney placed. Erick Valdovinos at 132 pounds took fourth. “Erick went out there with a positive attitude and wrestled like a champion with courage and determination,” said Jimenez. Christopher Morales, 126 pounds, brought home third. He beat his opponent by pin and he took his other two matches by points. “He came out very focused and he gave his all to earn a third place medal,” he said. Sebastian Barajas 113 pounds. won his first match by pin and won his other two matches by points. “Sebastian is a very dedicated wrestler that works hard day after day and a very respectful person that keeps looking forward to reaching his personal goal,” Coach said. Christian Fabela at 132 pounds is an amazing student athlete that keeps pinning his opponent is like a champion, he said. “He brings respect, determination, sacrifice and hard work on the mat every time he wrestles.” He won his first match by pin early in the first round. Reyes Ramirez, a freshman, took two of his matches, the first by points and the second match by a pin. “He is a strong, hard working young man that wants to go to State and he is doing everything to get out there,” Coach said. Invoice “I’m very proud of my wrestlers for their good effort on the mat. And the Warriors still only lost by four points. Stats: Ahmann 18, Barrera, Buck 6, Cardoso 2, Chiprez 5, Hildago 2, Kinney 2, Ponce 8 Even Colin Ahmann’s 23 points couldn’t get the Warriors to the W column on Dec. 13 at Goldendale. Wahluke lost by 11, 53-64. “It was another dismal shooting performance, and the game was still in reach, closer than the 11 points difference. Trailing by four in the second quarter, Alex Chiprez knocked down two three pointers to give us the lead at the half 26-21,” Coach Ahmann said. We were not feeling great about our shooting but knew we had to just play solid in the other areas of the game and we could keep the lead. But Goldendale had a couple of real physical big guys that just beat us up in the 2nd half and we didn’t have an answer for their size. Free throw shooting is up to 62% for us, so that is a positive thing but we just need to keep working hard like we are, and the improvements will come in time for league.
