12th January 21, 2015 Volume 16, Number 3 Mattawa, WA 99349 MAN THE Wednesday MATTAWA AREA NEWS Vantage to Pomona line public hearing meetings next week The Bureau of Land Management will be holding two public hearings next week for residents to view and discuss the new supplemental draft environmental impact statement on the proposed power line in the area known as the Vantage to Pomona Heights project. The local meeting will be held Wed., Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Sagebrush Senior Center. It is believed most local residents will be happier with the new proposed line than the original. The new line runs on the west side of the Columbia River, mostly on the Yakima Training Center. The meetings held almost exactly two years ago identified a route that mostly traveled locally through the Wahluke Slope farmland. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29 in Selah. It’s time for the annual Basketball Junior Cheerleading Camp at Wahluke. The camp will be held that Saturday morning. Registration is $20 and forms can be found on the school district website or in the main office of the elementary buildings. Jessica Arellano, a freshmen at Wahluke High School, has been invited to participate in the Down Under Sports Tournaments this summer hosted on the Gold Coast of Australia. Jessica said she is honored to be chosen and hopes to raise the $5,000 needed for the trip. If she attends, she will be participating in the international event on the Pacific Conference Cross Country Team. Jessica is part of the Warrior Cross Country team and made it to state competition. She explained that youth 14 to 19 years are invited if they ran at district competition and qualified for state. “I would love to go because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that cannot go to waste. I would be making new friendships with other people from across the whole world. New experiences and memories that I would never forget. This is a challenge I am willing to take to represent Washington state and the USA. I am hoping to become a greater athlete mentally and physically,” she said. Jessica is accepting donations for the trip and is planning fundraisers this spring. Game Bawl Page 2, Mattawa Area News, Jan. 21, 2015 Strictly Joyce By The 3 Edie-otos By Joyce Edie Have you ever watched one of those ridiculous movies with the made-up happy ending and wished real life could be that way? Hoped against hope that Superman really would come flying in and save the day, or that the dog who ran off 10 years ago would come back? The 12s got our ridiculous, miraculous happy ending. Against all odds, against everything that seemed possible, the Seahawks won the NFC Championship game last Sunday. 15 points in 44 seconds? Come on! If you tried to put that in a movie, up until now it would have just been pretend. But we watched it happen. I watched the game alone with Chunka, our boxer, and if dogs could talk she’d have a story to tell. She’d probably have dialed 911 (not sure how) and reported that her mother had lost her mind. I didn’t lose faith in the third, but I did allow myself to realize that we very possibly weren’t going to win and it was okay. Even when we tied it up and went into OT, I wouldn’t let myself quite believe it was happening. Then when Kearse caught that pass for the winning touchdown I honestly wondered if what I was seeing was real. And I say this with all honesty. I want us to beat the Patriots, but in a way the Northwest had her Super Bowl last Sunday. We got the miracle ending that is most often just reserved for Hallmark movies. Go Hawks. Scott honored by vets Jay Scott, site manager at Washington State University for the GEAR UP grants in the Kennewick School District, recently was honored by veterans. Myrl Briggs, Commander of Richland’s VFW Post, presented Jay Scott, pictured left, with the Teacher of the Year Award for the Post. “It was a great honor to be nominated by the VFW and represent them as their Teacher of the Year. It was a great event that I shared with my wife, children and my mother and father-in-law, Bob and Andrea Eckenberg,” Scott said. Scott was the past GEAR UP director at Wahluke and was instrumental in organizing the annual Veteran’s Day program here. Scott is a veteran. Mattawa Area News Karl: There are moments in your life that will be burned in your brain and heart forever. Moments of pure elation and emotion that overwhelm you. Change you. For me it’s the birth of my children, my wedding day, the day I proposed to my wife, and last Sunday. I watched “the tip” by Richard Sherman last year at my house, and ran into the street cheering. That was an incredible moment. This year, freezing and wet, surrounded by the incredible energy of the 12th Man, when Kearse caught that ball in the end zone, it was somehow even more incredible. I don’t think I’ve hugged or high-fived so many strangers in my life, including the hugging of a security guard. I will never forget it. Go Hawks. Keith Dean: There is going to be plenty of time to get into the upcoming matchups for SB 49. Carroll vs Belichick. Brady vs Sherman. Northwest vs Northeast. The dynasty of the 2000’s vs the emerging dynasty of the 2010’s. And on and on and on. But today. Today is for basking in the glory of back-toback NFC Championships. Something that hasn’t been done since the Brett Favre led Packers did it in the late 90’s. It’s about reliving the 35 yard walk-off TD to Jermaine Kearse, the target on all four of the interceptions that Russell Wilson threw. Jermaine Kearse, an undrafted free agent from the University of Washington. It’s about enjoying watching the highlights of Marshawn Lynch going BeastMode on the Packers defense to the tune of 157 rushing yards. This is unique 12’s! This doesn’t happen very often. We stand on the cusp of being mentioned in the same breath as the 1970’s Steelers, the 1980’s 49ers and Cowboys. This team hasn’t given up all season and I cannot wait to see what happens on Super Bowl Sunday! D. Keith: Sitting, no, standing, in Century Link this past Sunday with my son Karl, along with the 68,000-plus others there to see Seattle take on Green Bay for the NFC Championship, I was having the time of my life. I have been to many Seahawk games and watched hundreds more. This one was epic. This one was unbelievable. This was one for the ages. It was a “Where were you when….?” moment. I had a front row seat for the gutsiest, grittiest, most never-say-never game in recent history. I won’t lie, my range of emotions were on par with a teenage girl. I was anxious, I was nervous, I was elated, but I never doubted or lost hope. If you left this game or turned the station, I ask: How’d that work out for you? This team has shown over the last three years that quit is not in their vocabulary. Yes, they have lost games and they have made mistakes, but giving up while there is time still on the game clock is not one of their weak points. This was not their best played game, but it was by far their most hard fought win and I can’t wait to see what they do in the upcoming Super Bowl. No matter the outcome, I will watch it to the very end, with my family and friends. And I’ll have the time of my life. C-ya at the game. 509.932.4602 AmericA on WednesdAys At ephrAtA, WA. Freshman Jackie Hidalgo made the game-winning three point play with just 24 seconds left. The girls pulled a Seahawk move and rallied from seven points down in the fourth quarter. Freshman Kaylynn Holliday had 8 points and 5 rebounds in the fourth quarter, making her a key player in the Warrior comeback, Coach Brock Anderson said. Freshman Blanca Gutierrez also played key minutes in the fourth quarter. “Senior Maripaz Olivarez played inspired basketball all game and clearly did not want to lose,” he said. And added, “…was certainly nice to defeat Royal twice this year.” Final score was Warriors 35-33. The Lady Warrior wrestlers took part in a 20-plus team tournament in Othello last week. Two Warriors, Victoria Gayton and Eva Herrera, both wrestled well enough to make it into the medal round. Victoria lost only one match, her semi-final one, placing third overall. Eva wrestled well, but lost her medal round match for third. Two Warriors didn’t get to wrestle in the 16-woman bracket tournament, just because of geography. Since the Warrior team didn’t travel as far as some of those who came from all over the state, by random draw two of the Warriors had to settle for exhibition rounds. He didn’t coach the home game against Royal last Saturday and is scheduled to not be coaching this Thursday’s game. He is set to return as coach at this Saturday’s home game. Athletic Director Cody Marlow said the meeting was held for the purpose of allowing parents of players to share comments and concerns about the boys basketball program with Wahluke High School administration. “Coach Ahmann will not be coaching the next two games,” he said. When asked why, Marlow said because it is a personnel issue he couldn’t comment. Assistant Coach Adrian Sandoval took over coaching duties in Ahmann’s absence.
