This month we have two more great prizes to give away. First
of all, its getting closer to panto season and this year’s panto at
the Cliffs Pavilion will be Peter Pan staring TV legends, David
Hasselhoff and Christopher Biggins. This will surely be a must
see for all kids and adults with guaranteed laughs for all the
family. We caught up with Christopher Biggins to find out

Novelist Martina
Cole at The Forum
The countdown is on to meet bestselling author and readers’ champion
Martina Cole at The Forum Southend-on-Sea on Wednesday 19th November.
M
artina will be
introducing
her acclaimed latest
novel ‘The Good Life’
published earlier this
month, and promoting
the vital importance of
reading for everyone.
During the evening – which begins at 7:30pm
- Martina will be sharing details of her life as a
writer, as an avid supporter of libraries and as
a campaigner for adult literacy in her role as
ambassador for national charity, The Reading
Agency’s Six Book Challenge.
Audience members will have plenty of
chances to ask her questions too and find out
more about this most prolific queen of crime
drama whose books have so far sold more
than 13 million copies.
There will also be an opportunity to buy a
copy of ‘The Good Life’ – Martina Cole’s 21st
novel in 22 years, and perhaps have it signed
by the author herself. Essex-born Martina is
no stranger to the Forum Southend-on-Sea,
and visited this iconic building just before it
opened a year ago, to ceremonially add some
of her own books to the library shelves.
She was thrilled to have a preview of the joint
public library, academic library and learning
hub, built by a unique partnership between
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, the
University of Essex and South Essex College.
The lucky first visitors through the doors on
the opening day – Monday 30th September
2013 - each received a personally signed
copy of one of her novels.

National charity The Reading Agency is
aiming for 50,000 participants for its Six
Book Challenge in 2015 as part of its drive
to improve adult literacy in the UK. This
campaign encourages less confident or lapsed
readers to pick any six reads of their choice –
magazine, newspaper or online articles, song
lyrics, poems or comics as well as books –
and record their reading in a diary to receive
a certificate. In 2014 it has already reached
well over 40,000 people through public
libraries, adult community learning settings,
FE and sixth form colleges, prisons and
workplaces with the support of trade unions.
Nearly ninety per cent of survey respondents
say that they are more confident about
reading after taking part in the Six Book
Challenge.

Recycling Service
for Small Electrics
Residents are now able to put out small electrical items with their
kerbside recycling collections.
T
he electrical recycling scheme is available
to all residents in Southend-on-Sea and
allows for unwanted small electrical items
such as kettles, toasters, mobile phones
and hairdryers to be collected for recycling
at the kerbside. Cory Environmental have
delivered leaflets to every household advising
them of the start of the scheme in their area,
which started at the end of October.
Unwanted small electrical items can be
placed in any carrier bag and put out for
collection on the normal recycling collection
day. The bags will be collected and placed
in a special container under the vehicle. The
scheme is expected to divert approximately
40 tonnes of electrical waste from landfill a
year, which is the equivalent of about 3,000
kettles, much of which contain precious
metals such as copper and indium (used in
crystal displays), which can then be extracted
and used to create new products.
To encourage further recycling, Cory
Environmental are also funding an increase
in the number of rolls of pink recycling sacks
being delivered to all households. Since
early August, an extra roll of pink recycling
sacks have been included in the on-going six
monthly sack deliveries, with households
now receiving a total of four rolls. This
means every household has the equivalent
of two pinks sacks to be used for recycling
every week. For those that produce large
amounts of recycling, additional rolls of pink
recycling sacks can be collected from any
library branch across the borough free of
charge, or from the Civic Centre.

Santa Flights for
Local Charity
Essex youngsters are getting the chance to take to take to the skies for a
very special festive flight that raises money for a local good cause.
T
he London Southend Airport Charity
Committee is very pleased to announce
that it is operating two Santa Flights on
Saturday 6 December, thanks to the support
of its partner Stobart Air. And it is all to raise
funds for Fair Havens Children’s’ Hospice.
The flights – which will be crewed by a team
of happy elves and other festive favourites will take off from London Southend Airport
at 9.45am and 10.40am and last for around
20-minutes. These will then be followed
by fun and games at a party in the terminal
building, attended by Father Christmas and
the local Guide Dog partnership.
Members of the public can purchase tickets
for the Santa Flight and Party at £40 each by
calling the London Southend Airport Flight
Briefing Office on 01702 608 150.
In addition, pupils at eight Southend schools
have been invited to submit drawings of
aircraft, with the best from each school
winning a pair of tickets to take to the skies.

Director Jason Ivey says:

Fair Havens Hospice is the only place in the
area wholly dedicated to caring for adults
who have an illness which could shorten
their life. Adults over the age of 19 in need
of pain or medication control, or end of life
care, may stay at the In Patient Unit, or make
weekly visits to the Day Care Centre for
some much needed respite. The Fair Havens
Community Hospice Service also care for
patients in their own home, meaning they
can provide the right care, in the right place,
at the right time. Their specialist care is free
for as long as it is needed.

hristopher has been a regular on the
pantomime scene for years and this
year comes to the Cliffs Pavilion along with
‘Baywatch’ and ‘Knight Rider’ TV legend
David Hasselhoff, also known as the Hoff.
This years panto ‘Peter Pan’ with a fabulous
cast is sure to be a huge hit with audiences
across Essex. We caught up with Christopher
for a chat to find out more about him and this
years panto.
What do you enjoy most
about panto?
The audience! The fact
that every performance is
different and the audience
give you the lift you need
and they are always so
varied an age from babies
to OAPs – it’s
great to work
with a live
audience.

Yes it will – I do know David and I have done
little jobs with him before. He’s great fun and
I look forward to working with him properly.

– where has the time gone?
No-one who worked on the

- he didn’t consider himself a comedian but a
comedy actor. If Ronnie felt that the lines that
had been written by Dick Clement and Ian
La Frenais would be better said by someone
else, he would suggest they be said by that
other actor.
it is about being lucky not talent, being in the
right place at the right time, however I qualify
that statement by saying that it is important
to work hard both at the profession but also
ensure that you have another career to fall
back on in order to look after your family.
In 2007 you won ‘I’m a Celebrity...
Get Me Out Of Here!’ How did you find
the whole experience and was it a lot
harder than you imagined?
When you’re not working, what do you
like to do in your spare time?
It was the highlight of my career! To know
that I had the love and affection of the whole
nation – it was mind-blowing. What you saw
is what you got - it’s an experience I will
never forget, to be ‘King of the Jungle’.
I go on holiday, spend time with friends,
go to restaurants, the theatre and I love
the cinema. As you get older the one thing
you can do is say No so that I can do these
wonderful things.
After you have finished panto in
Southend, what’s next for you?
Who was your hero growing up and why?
When I was in Salisbury Rep there was an
actor called Oliver Gordon, who was a
director and performer. He played dame
in the panto and it was when I was watching
him that I got hooked on theatre.
It was only when I played PC Biggins in panto
did I realise my ambition – Oliver Gordon
was my real hero.
If you could work with any actor in the
world, who would it be and why?
I would like to work with George Clooney – I
like him and would like the opportunity to get
to know him more.
Did you always want to be an actor
growing up?
Yes! I wanted to be three things an actor,
vicar and chef!
I’ve been a vicar – when I played a wicked
sex-crazed vicar called Osbourne Whitworth
in the costume drama Poldark. I’m not a
bad cook as people will know from having
appeared on ‘Celebrity Masterchef’ this year.
All I’ve got to do now is crack the acting!
What would be the one piece of
advice you would give any aspiring
actors/actresses?
I always say ‘Don’t Do It!’ I’ve been very lucky
and had a phenomenal career - I always say

I will be heading to a hot climate to recover
from doing two shows a day and to recover
from The Hoff – only joking! I’ve got lots in
the pipeline but in this profession it is very
difficult to guarantee what will happen next
– this business changes so much and that’s
what I like about it, it’s never boring.

Record Year for Pier
V
isitor numbers to Southend Pier have
reached their highest level since it was
ravaged by fire in 2005.
By 21 October, 294,190 people had already
visited the pier compared to 283,468 for the
whole of 2013: the previous record year since
the fire.
The pier’s management say the figures are
‘extremely encouraging’ and that the attraction
will almost certainly smash the 300,000 visitor
mark by the end of the year.

opular Southend childminder, Sam
McKenna is national Childminder of the
Year!
Mum of two, Sam, 32, of Southchurch, won
this coveted title after being chosen by an
eminent panel of judges in Nursery World
magazine’s annual award scheme.
She was nominated by the parents of
her minded children who contacted her
Professional Association Childcare Early Years
(PACEY) Network and Development officer,
Samantha Collison to put her forward for
the award. Samantha also added that Sam
deserved to win just for managing to cope
with an Ofsted inspection at the same time
as moving home and finishing her Level 5
childcare degree.

was drawn to our attention.

As a parent myself, I can understand
how upsetting this must be to all those
concerned. The Council’s primary
focus at this time are the children and
families directly involved from Thorpe
Hall school, as well as working with
partner agencies to ensure the necessary
support is available to the wider
community.

We have been informed by the Police
that some of these images were covertly
taken at Southend Leisure and Tennis
Centre swimming pool changing rooms,
and are therefore working with Legacy
Leisure who operate the facility on our
behalf.
“

Legacy Leisure has fully cooperated
with the Police investigation. They have
rigorous safeguarding arrangements in
place which they continue to monitor
and review to ensure that they are of the
highest standard.

Council Condemn Vandals
C
ivic leaders have condemned the actions
of mindless vandals who defaced a major
memorial to brave Southend residents lost in
the two World Wars.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council Leader,
Councillor Ron Woodley said: Southend
Cenotaph is an extremely significant
monument which is far more than a
piece of history. It stands in continual
tribute to the men and women in our
borough who made the supreme sacrifice
and shows they will never ever be
forgotten.

The people who have so recklessly
damaged it have shown massive
disrespect – not just to the families of
those honoured by this memorial – but
to everyone with relatives who laid down
their lives in the service of their country.
“
We are horrified that this ugly graffiti
has scarred our Cenotaph just weeks
away from Remembrance Sunday.
”

undergoing conservation works to
coincide with the centenary of the start
of the First World War.

This was specially planned to ensure it
would be preserved in the best possible
condition for many generations to come.

We have contacted Police about this act
of destruction and will do our utmost to
make sure those responsible for such a
despicable act will be brought to justice.
The tag is clearly visible so I would urge
anyone that recognises it or knows who
did this to report it to the Police on 101.
”
In the
meantime,
this graffiti
will be swiftly
removed and
the Cenotaph
renovation
programme
will continue
ready for
Remembrance
