NEWS
The weather in Grabouw is a bit like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – “…you never quite
know what you’re going to get.” The good part about it is that it keeps us on our toes and
makes life interesting. There are a number of exciting, but weather dependent activities
approaching us in the next four weeks. I am trusting that the weather will be grand and all will
go ahead as scheduled. Please do take a look at your blue calendars and book the relevant
dates in advance so as not to miss out on the fun.

Amongst other events to look out for are the Pre-Primary sports day tomorrow, the InterHouse cricket and athletics next week, as well as the PA movie and spitbraai evening next
Friday. Bring your families and enjoy the company of the larger Applewood family together.
Our music department is now complete for next year, with some excellent replacements for
Mr Groen and Mrs Carroll. Mr van Nieting has included an introduction of our latest staff
addition further down in the newsletter. We have also recently received the results of the
Grade 6 IEB national benchmarking tests for 2014. Once again Applewood has excelled in
these which points to the excellent work being done by our teachers and the high standard of
Applewood education. Mrs Moodie has included a summary of these results further down in
the newsletter as well.
News from the Chairman of the School Council, (Mr Stephen Moorcroft) regarding the process
of finding Applewood a new Head, is that it is well on the way. 60 Applications for the position
were received and the process of shortlisting and interviewing has started. Mr Moorcroft,
along with other EXCO members and some invited external experts in education and HR
comprises the selection committee. We will be updated on the process as and when decisions
have been made and it is appropriate to do so. Mr Moorcroft has indicated that there are
some very strong candidates and is confident that the right person will be chosen to lead
Applewood forward into the future.
Enrolment for next year is very strong. Our Grade R and 2 Classes are full and new applications
will now have to move to a waiting list. To date we will be welcoming 40 new children from 26
new families to Applewood next year.
Have a super week ahead.

GRADE 6 IEB CORE SKILLS RESULTS 2014
Every year the Grade 6’s take part in 2 bench marking tests. Namely the IEB test ,written by participating Independent
schools and the Western Cape Education Department Bench marking tests written by all Grade 3 and 6 pupils at
participating Western Cape Schools. Applewood sees bench marking tests as a good indicator as to how we are
performing academically. Below is a summary of our 2014 IEB tests. (3234 pupils participated in the test from all over
SA).

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
It is once again time to look ahead to next year and plan for individual music tuition. Forms were given to the children.
Please fill in the reply slip and return it to Mrs Luden by 17 November 2014.
We are excited to announce that Ms Felicia Salies will be teaching violin from January 2015. Ms Salies has an Advanced
Diploma in Music at Stellenbosch University. Ms Salies, the current principal violinist of the University of Stellenbosch
Orchestra, is also a qualified flute teacher. We are looking forward to working with her. Chrisum van Nieting
CRICKET LEAGUE
U/13 CRICKET
The U/13 cricket team played a match against Dr Joubert Primary in Strand. We batted first and started off slowly accompanied by
the early loss of wickets. Conor McDonald steadied the ship with a good score of 30 runs. We ended our 20 overs on a total of just 54
runs. Dr Joubert struggled at first and lost a few early wickets as well. We looked as if we could win the game, but later in their
innings they managed to score more freely. Dr Joubert passed our score with 7 wickets down and three overs remaining. This was
the last game of the season. Next week is the Inter-House matches. Brendan Carroll
U/11 CRICKET
The last match of the season saw Applewood U/11 team take on Dr Joubert Primary. We won the toss and sent them in to bat first.
After 17 overs we managed to bowl them all out for 54 runs. A special mention goes to Oliver Pritchett for taking the first hat-trick of
th
the year and finishing with brilliant figures of 7 wickets for 27 runs. Our turn to bat and we surpassed their total in the 18 over,
winning the match by 8 wickets. This victory means that we ended the season unbeaten...well done Boys!! Daz Muir

GRADE 4 OUTING TO BEAUMONT WINE FARM
It was with great excitement that the Grade 4 class set out on a clear, albeit windy, Monday morning to visit the Beaumont Wine
Farm in Botriver. Our lessons came alive for us as we passed Houwhoek Inn and the very daunting Houwhoek Pass which we had
studied recently in our Local History Module. We had the most amazing, multi-faceted learning experience of the year, provided
by the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic Beaumont team. The students were introduced to the creative art of wine making by
Sebastian, the inner workings of the water mill by the ever-enthusiastic Andy Selfe, and finally the glories of bread baking by Nici.
The comforting and tantalising smell of freshly baked bread accompanied us back to school. We would like to thank everyone at
Beaumont for a very special and unforgettable experience. Thanks also to our intrepid driver, Ms Rademeyer
GRADE 1 OUTING TO THE AQUARIUM
Beaumont Sports Day
The U/8 and U/9 boys played in a mini-cricket festival at
Beaumont school last Friday, 7 November. Special thanks to
Isabella Pritchett for stepping in to help the U/8 Boys, who
were short a player. The U/9's won all three of their games.
The U/8's won 2 games and lost one. Both teams showed
excellent perseverance throughout all 3 games in the
sweltering, 30'C heat.
Sadly, the game against Gordons Bay Primary and Somerset
House yesterday was cancelled due to the rain. There are
no more mini-cricket league matches scheduled for this
Term and practice will commence as per normal on a
Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 for the remainder of the
Term.
Well done to each and every player for their contribution
throughout this season.
BEAUMONT SPORTS DAY
Well done to all the athletes who took part in the Beaumont
Day & Night Sports Day. Aurion Mead won 2 bronze medals
– congratulations!
