Pastor’s Corner by Fr. Joe Noonan
My niece had long golden hair that flowed gently
next to her head while she lay in her casket. At
the tender age of 21 years old Kristine joined with
the Communion of Saints in heaven. Her Funeral
Mass was the first one that I had celebrated for a
young family member. Only a few years earlier I
celebrated the Funeral Mass for my aunt, Mary
Jane. This funeral was the very first I celebrated as
a priest and for one of the holiest women I have
ever had the privilege of knowing. The passing of
these fine and wonderful women placed me as the
celebrant of their funeral Masses in new territory,
that of praying for family whom I loved and with
my family who now grieved. Witnessing the grief
of my sister, her husband and son, and my uncle
with his children and family, I realized how
profound their grief was, far beyond my own. It
shaped how I will approach every wake, funeral and
cemetery prayer service since.
The loss of a loved child, spouse, parent, best
friend, siblings can be tremendous. Our grief can
reach depths that we had not realized our pain
and feelings could go. The hope that we pray for
in these days of heavy sadness is that of Jesus
Christ risen from the dead. This is no small hope.
The Resurrection of Jesus should not be
something tritely considered by Christians,
brought out at Easter. This is the only reason that
Catholicism and the Christian offshoots exist. If
Jesus does not rise from the dead, then who
cares? There is no reason for Ss. Peter, Paul,
Andrew, James and the numerous apostles and
disciples to be martyred. Not only would their
deaths be in vain, but they would also be very
hard to explain. Certainly, this loosely united
group who had no regular means of
communicating with each other and difficult travel
conditions, would not have kept some bizarre
suicide pact that spanned over 30 years. They saw
and experienced the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. Their
conviction that they would share in eternal life
with Him came from experiencing His glory after
His Resurrection. They may have feared the pain
or suffering of martyrdom as any human might.
They, however, did not fear what would lay
beyond this life; hence, they determined to share
the good news of Jesus Christ in the face of pain,
suffering and death. As St. Paul wrote, “where, oh
death, is your sting?”
This is our faith and conviction. Death has no
more sting for the followers of Jesus Christ. It is
our Christian hope that all who have died in Christ
will rise with Him. My aunt Mary Jane had a
beautiful dream near the end of her life in which
Jesus stood just across a beautiful stream of
crystal clear water. Behind Him was an amazingly
beautiful garden. Jesus looked at her and
beckoned to come across the stream to join Him.
Her family shared that she had deep peace after
the dream. I believe that she experienced that
garden and the invitation of Jesus after she
breathed her last.
It is said that wakes and funerals are for both the
dead and those who remain. This is true. We pray
that all who have died may now live with the
glorified and risen Lord Jesus and all of the
Communion of Saints. These beautiful and
powerful prayers are also for us gathered together.
They beseech God’s consoling hand and ask for
comfort at an incredibly difficult time. Most
importantly, these prayers remind us of hope. On
our appointed day, Jesus will call each of us by
name from beyond our finite and humble
humanity to share in His divine life and glory. So
far beyond our imagination this is, that sometimes
we forget how great a promise immortality with
Christ is.
I look forward to seeing my niece and aunt again.
One day I hope to be beckoned to cross over. Like
St. Paul, I am “working out my salvation with fear
and trembling”, but always with great hope and
confidence that our Savior will indeed save us.

Dear Fellow Parishioners:
The Men’s Club will be hosting our annual card party
again this year and which has been a tradition for over
thirty years to be held on Thanksgiving Eve.
This is open to Men and Women over the age of 21. It
is a night of cards, door prizes, raffles or just plain old
socializing. We encourage you to bring your family
and friends we will provide a table and cards for you to
enjoy the evening. If you want to come and join
someone’s table there is always room for one more.
We also provide soft drinks, beer, wine and a buffet
dinner. You can’t beat the price of admission at $15 for
the evening. If you haven’t been to our card party
before, now is the time. Remember this is for our
Parish and it is a great time to show your support.
We will also be featuring a Texas Holdem Tournament
that evening. If you play or have always wanted to try
it, this would be a great opportunity to do so. Price to
play is $40 and we will be having rebuy and an add-on
during the tournament.
This is one of our fundraisers and the monies raised
through the St. Damian Men’s Club go to support over
twenty organizations and functions within our parish.

Death, Grieving and Celebrating Funerals Year of the Sacraments – November
Death and grieving - those awful words that elicit the
strongest of emotions - seldom welcomed or greeted with
joyful anticipation; yet, a certainty of life.
Let us ponder the following: life – death – life.
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, known for her ground-breaking book,
On Death and Dying, says “It's only when we truly know and
understand that we have a limited time on earth -- and that
we have no way of knowing when our time is up -- that we
will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only
one we had.” Death or tragedy strike and we tumble thru
the stages: denial, anger, bargaining and depression, and
hopefully arrive on the peaceful shores of acceptance - and
not necessarily in this order. Like our DNA, each of us has
our own individual journey as we try to move from denial to
acceptance.
"The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid
and deeds left undone." (Harriett Beecher Stowe) A chaplain
was visiting a terminally ill patient, and asked if he wanted to
receive communion. He refused. He was sullen and angry
and didn’t understand why he could not die. He said that is
wife had died of cancer a year earlier. She was a good wife,
mother, grandmother, and Catholic. The conversations began
slowly, gently and eventually revealed the root of the anger:
the patient never told his wife how much he loved her … and
he blamed himself for her death. The morning this patient
forgave himself – and God – he received communion … and
went home to God that night.
Grieving is not only life-giving, it is holy. Jesus loved the
family of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Yet, He did not come
immediately when summoned. The grieving Martha said, “If
you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus
responded, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who
believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever
lives by believing in me will never die.” And what did Jesus
do when he arrived at Lazarus’ tomb? He wept. Jesus wept.
He showed us the importance and necessity of grieving.
Celebrating funerals. What an odd combination of words.
But look deeper. Isn’t the final tribute of the life of a loved
one and knowing they are with God a celebration? Funerals
allow families and friends to share their stories and
anecdotes about their loved one. Quite often, the tears
morph into laughter and then back into tears. Lest we
forget, funerals give us closure … they help us say good-bye.
Finally, the funeral Mass draws all together into communion
with God and one another. “It is our great ‘Thank You’ to
God who created us, died for us, and is calling each one of
us back to Him, our loving God. The liturgy, particularly at
the time of death, is a unique moment, a holy moment, a
God-moment.” (Catholic Cemeteries) Life – death – life.

“And the Saints Came Marchin’ in…”
Hallow’s Eve took on a new perspective for the Religious Ed students. Our children get so caught up in
the secular meanings surrounding Halloween that the Christian tradition of celebrating the triumph
over death reflective in the Lord’s resurrection gets lost. The Church celebrates a three day ritual of
remembering those who have died beginning with Hallow’s Eve and culminating on November 2 with
the celebration of All Soul’s Day. The lesson shared by the “Guests” was a reminder of the faith tradition
as well as explanation of the whys of certain rituals, such as carving of pumpkins, costumes and trick or
treating. The Catechists dressed as Saints and taught the sessions in order to share their stories and be
a reminder to the children of those holy men and women who are the foundation of our faith. The
upper grades paid tribute to those in their lives by participating in the “Dia de Muerte” ritual. They
brought mementos to decorate our shrine and shared the stories of those close to them who have
passed away. The realization was that though others pass away leave impressions on our lives and in the
retelling of their attributes they continue on.
The St. Damian Youth Choir has over 50
members from 3rd grade- 8th grade from St.
Damian School.
We sing every Wednesday morning at the 9:00
am school Mass. All parishioners and school
parents are welcome.
On Sept. 26th, they sang at the Mayor’s Golf
Outing at George Dunn golf course. Many thanks
to our Mayor, Hank Kuspa, for supporting Saint
Damian School’s Fine Arts program.
The St. Damian Youth Choir will be singing on
Christmas Eve at the 3:00 Mass in the main
church. Come and sing with us as we celebrate
the birth of Jesus!

Little Lambs Nursery
We are open, up and running, having a good time!
It has been 2 months now, we have had anywhere from 2 to 7 little ones each week.
1, 2, and 3 year olds, boys and girls, playing together, having fun, and making new
friends, while Mom and Dad attend Mass. Even those who cried in the beginning
are now coming with smiles on their faces. We are still able to add a few more, so if
you have been thinking about joining us just stop in and check us out! It has truly
been a joy working with these little lambs giving the parents time for Jesus.
We would also like to thank those who have donated toys, books, and a beautiful
carpet from Style Carpets. We feel that our room is bright and inviting! If you would
