Description: Tenure-track position starting on September 1, 2015.
Qualifications: Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in APPLIED MATHEMATICS
at the assistant or associate professor level, beginning September 1, 2015. Applicants must have a
Ph.D. in mathematics and must demonstrate evidence of excellent teaching and research potential.
All areas in applied mathematics research will be considered. The candidate must demonstrate an
interest in teaching a broad range of mathematics courses to a diverse body of students and engage
undergraduates in research. Interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculty in the School is
expected.

Bakersfield, founded in 1970,
is one of twenty-three
campuses of the CSU System
and currently has an
enrollment of 8,700 students.
The University services a
socially and ethnically diverse
population of 560,000 in an
area of 10,000 square miles.
The city of Bakersfield
(population over 363,000) is
located in the southern San
Joaquin Valley and has a
much lower cost of living than
coastal California. Los
Angeles, the Pacific Ocean,
Mojave Desert, and Sierra
Nevada Mountains are all
within a two-hour drive from
campus.
Teaching/Research: The current teaching load is 2-3 5-unit courses per quarter, with 7 per
year maximum. Starting in AY 16/17 the teaching load will be 12 units/semester where most of the
courses are 4 units each. Almost all courses in the Department of Mathematics include an
activity/problem solving session. Assigned time for research and proposal preparation is available
during the first three years of appointment, and subsequently on a competitive basis. It is expected
the successful candidate will develop a research agenda and maintain a publication record.
