Newsletter No. 36 ... November 2014

Newsletter No. 36
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Saturday, some Year 5 students, their parents,
and Mrs Fogarty and I had the pleasure of attending
the G20 Children’s Art Project launch at the
Substation Gallery at Paddington. Twenty-one schools
across Brisbane worked with various ‘artists-inresidence’ last term to create a piece of artwork to
showcase Australia to the world leaders arriving this
week in Brisbane. The artwork has been digitalised
and can be seen projected on buildings in George
Street in the city this week. The artwork will be
returning to SPX in a few weeks.
Thank you for your participation and attendance at
mass and morning tea last Sunday at Salisbury. It was
a great morning and we are looking forward to more of
these Parish/School masses next year.
This Thursday, our Year 6 and Year 7 students will
enjoy their retreat day at school where they reflect
on their years at SPX and look forward to moving to
high school next year. We keep them in our prayers
during the next few weeks here at school.
In two weeks, our Christmas Carols evening is on
Thursday 27th November commencing at 7:00pm in
Owen Hall. The evening is a combination of class,
choir and community singing and is a great way to
celebrate the coming of Christmas and the end of the

school year. The students will sit at the front of the
hall with parents on chairs behind them.
Costumes are simple:
 Students are asked to come in
clothes of Christmas colours (red,
white and green).
Softdrinks, Poppers and water will be
available for purchase from 6:30pm at Owen Hall.
Please find attached the school fee schedule for
2015.
The Brisbane Catholic Education Council
recommendation and our own expenses have been set
at a level consistent with the actual cost of operating
the school. The school fee component has remained
the same amount as 2014. There is an increase in the
Capital Levy which is used to pay our loan for the
undercover area roof and to maintain school facilities.
Next year, there is also the introduction of the
Technology Levy. In the past five years, the following
technology items have been installed in the school:
 Wireless network
 Teacher laptops
 Year 6/7 and Year 5 banks of laptops
 iPads in P-3
 Laptops across school
 P-7 data projectors
All of these items have been purchased through a
combination of P&F funds, school funds and Brisbane
Catholic Education grants. The technology levy will
allow replacement of some technology items and for
purchase of other items.
The school tuition fees include an amount remitted
centrally (the Archdiocesan Levy), which provides
shared resources to all schools within the
Archdiocese. Also included is a levy of $20 per
student to provide for the purchase of land for future
school development within the Archdiocese. This is a
vital investment in the future provision of Catholic
schooling within the Archdiocese of Brisbane.
Please keep in your prayers the Graham family
(Rebecca & Scott and Austin, Charlie and
Sophie) as they mourn the passing of their
mother and grandmother.
May she rest in peace.
Enjoy the week ahead.

We started the week in a memorable way with a whole
school liturgy to commemorate Remembrance Day
around our school flag. It is a special time to
remember the many sacrifices made during war and to
pray for peace.
Our student leaders – Claudia, Florence, Jarred,
Devin, Stephanie and Isabella represented St Pius X
at the Salisbury RSL service. They presented a
wreath on behalf of our community and thanks go to
Mrs Peta Gerrard for making this beautiful wreath.

APRE
Last week the Year 4, 5, 6 and 7 students went to the
Mary MacKillop Museum at Annerley. This museum has
been run for many years by the Sisters of St Joseph
and is closing down in a few weeks. Our students were
one of the last groups to go to the museum and the
Sisters were very impressed with the behaviour of
the students and also their knowledge about Mary
MacKillop. Here’s some comments from the students:
2014 JAPANESE AWARDS
At the end of each year, certificates for excellence in
Japanese are awarded to various Year 6/7 students.
This awards ceremony will be held at assembly at
8:45am on Friday 21st November.
Parents are invited to come along and applaud these
hard working students.
Helen Claes
Japanese Teacher
We liked learning about Mary MacKillop’s life.
We also liked the dioramas. (Holly, Year 4)
LOST & FOUND
I liked the dioramas and the relic of Mary MacKillop’s hair.
LOST – 1 x black belly-bag containing an FM Receiver.
The name Michael Clark is written on the
outside. Please contact the school office if
you have seen this item.
(Zane, Year 4)
The Mary MacKillop Centre showed Mary’s life with big
dioramas. They were very realistic and it made you feel like
you were there. It is disappointing that it is shutting.
I enjoyed my experience there. (Sebastian, Year 5)
GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR
Often parents say that that they are too busy, too
stressed, have too much to do and not enough time.
This week I have included a Parenting Idea’s article on
simplifying and calming family life.
I had an amazing time there! I loved how the Sisters were so
polite. I was very interested in the wax models. Our class
was very lucky to have such an exciting, educational
experience. (Livvy, Year 5)

Breaking News!!
A very big thank you to Cassie
McCormack (mum of Ava, Year 2 & Cooper, Prep) for
volunteering as our P&F Treasurer. We look forward
to working with you.
FROM THE P&F PRESIDENT
Without a yummy drummy or apple
slinky in sight, the 2014 Tuckshop and
Baking volunteers celebrated a busy
but successful year on Friday night
when we gathered at Tarragindi Thai
for the annual 'thank you' dinner provided by the P&F.
It was a fun night and much appreciated by everyone.
I can highly recommend volunteering at the tuckshop,
it's a great way to get to know other parents and
seeing those smiling faces over the counter certainly
makes it worthwhile. In case you are wondering, the
students are very patient with the 'newbies'.
This week I'm introducing Mel Cridland, our P & F CoSecretary. Mel has also contributed significantly to
the Tuckshop over the years. (She patiently trained
me on my first day in tuckshop - and survived!) Mel
and Nikki (who I'll introduce next newsletter) have
generously agreed to continue in the Co-Secretary
role for another year......
THIS WEEK’s P&F PROFILE:
Mellisa (Mel) Cridland
Position on P&F:
Co-Secretary (shared role)
Other roles at St Pius X:
Tuckshop Convenor & volunteer.
Children:
Brooke (Year 5) and Amy (Year 2)
What do you do outside school?
I work part-time as an Accounts Officer and an
Administration Role at CODA South, which is a small
Not-for-Profit Disability Organisation based in
Greenslopes. We provide flexible support for Adults
with a Disability in the family home and also help in
accessing the local community.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
A very big thank you to this year's Tuckshop
In my spare time I enjoy going to the Bootcamp
sessions run for local Mums in Salisbury, cooking,
going to the beach, spending time with family and
socialising with friends.
Convenors - Bec Woolgar and Lucy Troughton for the
fantastic work they've done. As a tuckshop volunteer
myself this year, I know first hand that they were a
great team and made everyone feel very welcome.
What were you like at primary school?
At Primary School I loved most sports especially
netball and swimming and also enjoyed learning the
piano.
On that note, you may have heard we are looking for
one or two enthusiastic parents to take over as
Tuckshop Convenor/s in 2015. Lucy and Bec are in
the process of writing up a "How to run the Tuckshop"
manuel to make it that much easier. If you are
thinking I haven't volunteered in the tuckshop there's
no way I could run it - fear not, Lucy did just that last
year and has done an absolutely fantastic job
alongside Bec.
What do you like most about St Pius X?
I love that St Pius X is small in size but so big in
heart, in faith and has a wonderful sense of
community.
SCHOOL BANKING COMPETITION
School Banking is holding a competition with the
following prizes to be won:
 40 x GoPro cameras
 150 x Slip’n’Slide Wave Riders
Yes, the tuckshop brings in money for the school but
it is also a treat for the students and just as
importantly for us parents - it gives us a break from
making lunches, even if it is just one day. Let's keep
it going.
How to Enter:
Simply make a school banking deposit for any amount
on any of the following school banking Fridays:
14th, 21st & 28th November
That's enough from me.
If you'd like more
information about the Tuckshop Convenor role, please
call Lucy (0413 697 741) or Bec (0400 004 103).
Each deposit will automatically be entered into the
competition. The more times you deposit, the more
chances to win. Good Luck!
