November 2014 Our Vision: We create and deliver joyful and authentic Christian Community For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8 Our Mission: We glorify God through worship, nurture, service and outreach. Have you ever had someone pay the bill? I was having breakfast at a diner, as I sometimes do, alone with my books, preparing for a sermon. Immersed in words and thought, I barely noticed that the waitress brought my check, but then took it away, then brought it back again. She placed it on the table, smiled, and said, “Somebody in the restaurant paid for your meal. You’re all set.” Then she walked away. WORSHIP 10:00 am Faith Church Staff Wayne A. Lowe, Jr. Pastor Caleb Flick Director of Music Ministries Ellen Carnahan Director of Children’s Music Debbie Kissinger Office Administrator Carol Hoover Treasurer Emily Dame Financial Secretary Joe Sponaugle Custodian Faith Presbyterian Church 1801 Colonial Road Harrisburg, PA 17112 717-545-4631 www.lifeinfaith.org Dear Friends in Faith, I didn’t quite know what to do. I looked around to see if I recognized anyone, but to no avail. I had the strangest feeling of helplessness. There was nothing I could do. To insist on paying would have been pointless. All I could do was trust that what she said was actually true and then live in that — which meant getting up and leaving the restaurant. My acceptance of what she said gave me a choiceto live like it was true or to create my own reality in which the bill was not paid. This little experience points us to its larger reality of the Gospel. God in Jesus Christ has paid our bill. In today’s living, we have to trust that we don’t owe anything. We have to trust that something is already true about us; something has already been done; something has been there all along. There is nothing more you owe. God already loves you. Also in this story is a little experience of the stewardship that God calls us to. With grateful hearts that trust in God, we offer a part of our financial resources without expectation or need to receive anything in return. We release it to God as an act of thanks and discipleship. As we approach November 16th, our Consecration Sunday at Faith Church, please pray how you might engage in this. As you pray, remember that your giving is a privilege. Never do you owe anything to the organization that is called “Faith Church.” Your giving is an act of trust in God. Your giving is an act of personal commitment to God’s kingdom and the ministry we are called to as Christ’s church. This kind of trust will always feel at least a little risky. We like the assurance that the money we give will be used effectively and for purposes we believe in. In this particular season at Faith Church and in the Presbyterian Church (USA), I would ask you for an extra measure of trust as you consider your 2015 financial commitment to Faith Church. Your ongoing faith in Jesus and trust in Faith Church is a blessing and greatly appreciated. Organ music on that day will be appropriate to both communion and All Saint’s Day (November 1, 2014) when we remember our loved ones who have died. Sowerby’s Festival Prelude on Sine Nomine uses the familiar tune of “For All The Saints” as its point of departure beginning with the famous pedal lines and building to a triumphant conclusion. Postlude, for both services, will be Dupre’s Placare Christe Servulis (Christ Forgive Us Of Our Sins), a short but brilliant toccata on the Gregorian chant of the same name. Consecration Day Concert So this day may technically get two C’s. First we will have guest speakers and special music from the choirs celebrating Consecration Sunday. A luncheon will follow and Faith Church will host it’s second annual concert featuring the Vintage Brass and soprano Tamara Black! Tamara, who first sang for Faith over the summer, hails from the greater Reading/Allentown area and is an accomplished Soprano. She is a graduate of Westminster Choir College and Temple University and serves as the Executive Director of Berks Opera Company. As the newsletter goes to press Jim Milbrand, Vintage Brass founder and director, and I are in the process of finalizing the program for “Strike Up the Classics!” which will feature light classics, favorite standards, combination of brass, organ, piano and vocals as well as some special treats! Highlights will include Gershwin’s “An American in Paris Suite” and “How Long has This Been Going On?”, “Vissi d’arte” from Puccini’s Tosca and “Ain’t it a Pretty Night?” from Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, and I will play composer-pianist William Bolcom’s Ragtime inspired “Garden of Eden Suite”. There will be something for everyone to enjoy: INVITE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY! Christ the King Sunday Christ the King Sunday marks the end of the Church Year (and “Advent I”) marks “New Year’s Day” in the Christian Church. Once again we will have joyous music from the choir and bell choirs and a few mighty organ pieces to end the Church Year with a BANG! I look forward to seeing you in church! Anna started drinking tea and eating light refreshments when she became hungry in the afternoons, since it was typical to eat only breakfast and dinner at that time in Britain. She began inviting friends to join her and soon the afternoon tea tradition was born. On December 3, we invite all ladies to a “light tea” to be served at 2:00 pm in Shaffer Hall. A “light tea” is defined by serving tea, scones, and other assorted sweets. This very special event is a great way to take a break during this busy time of year and enjoy an afternoon with friends. Watch for the sign-up sheet to be posted in the Welcome Center. ___________________________________________________________ MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Good-by, sweet flowers! Through bright Summer hours you have filled our hearts with cheer We shall miss you so, and yet you must go, For this is the Fall of the year. Now the days grow cold, as the year grows old, And the meadows are brown and sere; Brave robin redbreast has gone from his nest, For this is the Fall of the year. I do softly pray at the close of the day, That the little children, so dear, May as purely grow as the fleecy snow That follows the Fall of the year. I hope November finds everyone well and that you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather we have been having. The children had a great time with all of our October activities. We are getting ready for another fun month with Indian and Thanksgiving songs and crafts. We will be working hard to earn our feathers. All of our classes will be talking about the things we are thankful for. At the end of the month our little Pilgrims and Indians will join together for our Thanksgiving feast. My favorite Wednesday Faithful is this month. Our staff really enjoys being able to join together and share such a delicious meal. Our compliments and thanks to the cooks. We wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and hope everyone has an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. If we can be a help to you in any way, let us know. Northwood Staff Deb Mercurio, Director STEWARDSHIP REMINDERS Consecration Sunday – November 16 Consecration Sunday is especially important this year as Faith is determining the future of our church within PC(USA). While the discernment process is underway, it is important that we all continue to support our church and enable it to continue offering opportunities to our members for spiritual growth. We must continue to pay for staff and pastor salaries, utility bills, Mission support and facility maintenance. Please prayerfully consider giving to Faith in accordance with your gratitude to God and pray His will be done regarding our future. Faith’s Mortgage Update As of September 30, Faith’s mortgage balance is $130,781. The debt offering for September which is to pay for the October payment was $1,100. Our monthly payment is $2,020. The mortgage is not part of our operating budget. The weekly offering/Consecration pledges do not go towards paying the mortgage payment. Faith has always maintained a separate campaign for the mortgage. Stewardship would like to remind you kindly to consider giving towards the mortgage.
