FATHER BROWN’S CORNER
This weekend men from the parish's next ACTS team will give talks inviting men of the parish to participate. I encourage all the men of the parish to seriously consider and pray over their decision to do so.
ACTS, like so many other programs which have gone before it, has as its object the spiritual renewal of
it’s participants. There are so many different ways that we can work on our spiritual lives: daily mass, lectio divina, attending a silent or a directed retreat, participating in a parish mission, meeting regularly with
a spiritual director. The reason I like ACTS is that it is parish-based and lay-led. The clergy of the parish
have their part to play in the process, but it is not dependent on them. That, incidentally, is the same reason that I am excited about our developing Stephen Ministry. I realize that attending an ACTS retreat involves sacrificing both time and money, but consider this. How did you spend your weekend exactly one
month ago? Perhaps there was some momentous thing you did, some important event you attended, but
my bet would be many are hard pressed to recall anything about that particular weekend. I can fairly safely guarantee that any man who participates in the ACTS retreat December 11th through the 14th won't
soon forget it. Many of the retreatants on the first night of the retreat ask themselves: "What the heck have
I gotten myself into here?" But by the time we celebrate the closing Mass at 11:00 on Sunday, almost all
of the participants are more than pleased that they took the risk and entrusted themselves to this work of
deepening their spiritual lives.

ADVENT CONCERT
Recently we have been notified about a parish/school
calendar conflict. The Men’s ACTS retreat send-off
and our Advent Concert were scheduled for the same
evening. After consulting with Father Brown and Mrs.
Laury, we have decided to change the concert to
Wednesday, December 10 at 7:00 PM so that all of our
fathers will be available to attend. We apologize for
this change, but we feel it will benefit the entire Holy
Redeemer community. We will continue to remind you
of this change so you do not miss the concert.
RACIAL JUSTICE DIALOGUE
Archbishop Carlson has challenged us to begin to dialogue around the deep racial injustice issues that have
sparked the protests after the Michael Brown shooting in
Ferguson. Who is interested in beginning to dialogue
around these issues? If you would like to be part of this
conversation, please contact Carol Bahmueller at
[email protected] or call 314-221-8921.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
Holy Redeemer, in partnership with First Congregational
Church of Webster Groves, is sponsoring a Mother-toMother talk on Monday, December 8 at 7:00 PM at First
Congregational Church, 10 West Lockwood Ave. A
panel of African American mothers will share with us
their powerful stories of “The Talk” they have with their
sons about how to act when stopped by police as well as
the experiences of their sons and brothers. Mothers and
all people are encouraged to attend and engage with
these mothers around their reality. Refreshments will be
served.
BOTTLES FOR BABIES
Thank you students, parents, and staff for your generosity in supporting babies, children and moms! We have
donated $731.04 to Lifeline Coalition. This great organization will help fund the programs at Our Lady’s Inn,
Birthright, and Good Shepherd’s Children Center. Special thanks to the 4th grade class for most change collected. Thanks also to Mrs. Appelbaum and the Class of
2015 for leading and organizing this worthwhile fundraiser!

shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee
drives to work
in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor

By his vows,
A monk consecrates himself,
Gives himself to God.
