Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup

Old Meadonians, quadruple holders of the Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup moved painlessly through to the second
round with a convincing if low scoring win over Old Stationers at the latters’ Barnet ground on Saturday. However, the hosts
were not the feistiest of banner bearers for the vaunted Southern Amateur League, finding their duties over onerous and
the visitors’ defence not very accommodating even though Meads’ attack deigned to score more than just one in each half,
hitting the post twice and having three cleared off the line before the interval and causing two to be cleared off the line in
the second half. In fact, with their back five (including keeper Gary Robinson) impervious to anything their hosts could
throw at them and their mid-fielders and front runners breaking at the drop of a hat, even lying back in the second half,
Meads had too much on offer to be troubled by supine opposition. Craig Jones took the headlines by notching both meads’
goals, the first on the half hour, stepping inside two tackles to score from the edge of the area and escaping in the last five
for a one on one with the keeper. Unfortunately this usual scion of good behaviour, who also sets his playing standard high
got embroiled in a shouting match, expressed his frustration in terms which the referee could not ignore and he was
ordered off with a member of the home team. Meads’ managers named their back five, Robinson, Jordan Mace, Adam
Goode, Ali McCombe and Kevin Quinn joint MoM.

Old Isleworths 2 v 2 Old Meadonians II (Report by Nick Jones)
Old Meadonians arrived at their lowly hosts with the air of optimism. The crowd (Stanners) was intrigued to see how AVB
wannabe Luke Graham was fairing in his first managerial role. The banter in the changing was poor, Jones was moaning per
usual especially when someone stole his shorts and was left to wear what can only be described as ridiculous, the shorts
would have fitted ‘Big Daddy’. Ryan Kohn took things too far when he got out his Ipad to watch the Liverpool game.

Meads started off the brighter keeping the ball well in a 4-2-3-1 system (well I think that was what we were playing)
creating a few half chances without really troubling the keeper. Adam Boynton should have scored after 15 minutes after
some neat build up play only to hit the keeper from 7 yards when he had the goal at his mercy. Not much else really
happened until the half hour mark when Dean Stacey limped off injured with a broken eyelash after moaning most of the
game about his corns on his toes. AVB Graham was forced into a tactical reshuffle, to a Mike Bassett 4-4-2. This meant Ryan
Kohn swapping from right back (where he spend most of the time kicking the ball out of play) and partnering man mountain
Tom at centre half, with Adam switching to right back (chin up!).
With the half finishing 0-0 AVB Graham reminded the troops about being patient and that we will get chances so let’s make
sure we take them.
Meads again came out the blocks quickly keeping possession of the ball but not really doing anything with it. Meads finally
broke the deadlock on the hour mark when David Miller delivered an inch perfect ball to the back post for Gatsby to head
back across goal for leading scorer Matt Allen to tap home from 4 inches. Meads then began to sit back and allowed
Isleworth back into the game, well in fact the referee did, in giving the softest penalty I have ever seen, when Gatsby was to
adjudged to have pulled back one of their players……..hmmm ref I think you have a had a shocker there!! Bang 1-1 Joe had
no chance.
The match was evenly balanced, but Meads soon found themselves 2-1 down within 10 minutes of being 1-0 up, when a
deep cross from the left which took and eternity to reach their centre forward only for him to head the ball so high back
across goal that it nearly hit the Virgin Atlantic flight from LA and somehow managed to end up in the bottom corner of the
goal, shocking defending!
Meads were rocking and Isleworth continued to press, until 10 minutes remaining when Matt Allen broke down the right
and squared the ball to Glover who tucked it home and make it 2-2, cue the grandstand finish……well that what it should
have been. Glover kept complaining throughout the game, “that the guy keeps going through the back of me” I wasn’t quite
sure if he was referring to the defender who was marking him or his Friday nightadventures down Old Compton Street.
Meads huffed and puffed and should have had 2 clear penalties (next time Azza go down) without making their keeper
make a real save of note. The game started to get scrappy and tempers were beginning to boil over, especially with Glover
and Allen, with the latter lucky to stay on the pitch.
Overall a disappointing 2-2 it was a case of Déjà vu for the second week running. Meads however are still unbeaten but if
we want to win anything this year we need to kill teams off when we have the chance.

Another decent win in the AFA Minor Cup this week despite the fact that the game should have been dead and buried long
before the 90 minutes was up let alone the penalty shootout considering the quality we have in our team. Despite this
however, the game finished up 1-1 after 90 minutes with Bealonians pulling back a late equaliser before we did the same in
the first half of Extra Time, which itself ended 2-2. Thankfully our team has a lot of spirit, which is brought about by all the
hardcore drinking and grabbing of the best sandwiches in the bar after each and every game, and the penalty shootout
ended in tears for the visiting side, with goals from Dylan Zoufoul, Harrison Davies-Rowe, Nick Nourrice, Mike Conroy and
Marvin West as well as Dudek-style goalkeeping from Rourke Minors (It's just a shame Mignolet couldn't keep out Diego
Costa later that afternoon up at Anfield).
As always Barry McGuiness brought great energy and pace to the game whereas the fourth team's incredible left back (who
is on for a call up to the ones in the forthcoming weeks) showed real experience, maturity and Makélélé-esque quality in
every aspect of his game. Jon Best commanded from the back alongside Eoin Toher, Paul Adams and Mark Stone; the latter
filing a late transfer request from the fifth team prior to the game much to Dusty's disapproval and misery in the changing
rooms. Thankfully us fours are much more organised as our strikers and Essex-born midfield combo show week in week out
with their outstanding punctuality. Another warming aspect of the match was the return of workman Tim Haddon who
most people had assumed missing or still running a marathon after not being seen for several weeks.
Next up in this competition is Economicals 4's, the team we just happen to be playing this Saturday. A statement needs to
be made in this game because, as many great players like myself know, football is played with your head and confidence
can be the difference between a team playing well and a team performing like some of our referee's this season.
Moreover, since Bestie tried his best last week in the match report to try and pick holes in every player's individual
contribution to the team in order to draw away from the fact that his poor performances' this season are coming more
frequently than that of Liverpool's, I think a little bit of Soccer AM style team morale building is in order:
- I don't think that I've actually seen Rupert Cope run yet so he could be a dark horse, but still I think I'm going
to have to give this one to Tinashe Sithole.
- Considering it takes him forever to get off his line this one goes to Rorke Minors who, just to clarify, actually
discussed division of a positive integer by a non-existent quantity with me pre-game last week.
- Would have said the referee we had against Old Strand Academicals but apparently he hasn't registered yet
so this one has to go to Mark Stone.
- Considering that he constantly tells us that we still have to fight for our place at every half time, this one
has to go to Barry McGuinness who I might add is possibly the best player manager I've ever been lucky enough to play
with. There's my spot safe.
- Anyone who wears that yellow kit.
- Again quite hard considering most of our forwards' finishing is quite comical even at the best of times, but as
he has the most minutes under his belt of any striker this season, this award goes to Marvin West.
- Here's a familiar face: Mr Jon Best.
- Considering I usually shower in a different changing room because most of our players take
too long in the shower, I think that this one has to be a team effort.

Old Meadonians 6th
Old Meadonian VI 1 - 1 Reigatians II
After a convincing cup win the 6's went into this top v bottom clash in good spirits and fairly confident.
We'd played the league leaders on the opening weekend of the season and after taking the lead in that game, ended up on
the wrong side of a 4-2 result, giving away sloppy goals including a penalty and generally being out fought by the oppo.
We started the game with an experimental 3-5-2 formation. Looking to force the visitors into crowded central areas where
our strong midfield and defensive 3's would dominate.
As in the cup game myself and Jayson looked to put the back 4 under pressure not allowing them to play the ball out on the
deck, resulting in long balls, again which our boys would deal with comfortably.
We took a deserved lead when Jayson contested a bouncing ball with one of the cb's, he then used his pace to get away
from two defenders before slotting the ball across the keeper into the far corner.
35mins into the match it was felt that our wing backs were tiring and we went back to a 4-4-2 bringing Craig on from the
bench into his favoured Right Back position.
HT 1-0
Into the second half and squad Favourite Usif was introduced up top and maybe it was the rust, or long grass or stage fright
or the low sun or the time of year or time of the month or a bad case of the G Kennys but after a fantastic Meads move he
was in on goal, 6 yards out, only keeper to beat and.......well you've seen the result so you know what happened.
The away side started to take control of the game and put us under pressure. Long throws, corners, we had dealt with them
well until Craig was harshly judged to have handled in the box.
Pen for Reigate and their taker scuffed the ball into the keepers right hand corner.
We did create more chances and could have got a winner, we went close from some set plays and had a great chance
toward the end when I slipped Alex 'I'm all about the team' Thamby in and he missed at the near post with team mates
screaming for ball across goal.
Mention for Big Jay who made a great save toward the end of the game also. It's like watching a tree fall over but that adds
to the drama.

A good point in a scrappy, physical game and it gets us off the mark for the season. With games in hand I see us climbing the
league in coming weeks.

I can’t stand them. Any win over this lot is worth its weight in gold. Having already played them 2nd game of the season and
collapsed with 3 mins to go (winning 2-1 lost 3-2) we were out for revenge. However, with our league form and them sitting
2nd in the league the odds were against us. We hit a new low (for the 7s) with back to back heavy defeats in the league but
with a 5-1 cup success in between, it was very simple, we needed to bring our cup form into the league. And we did 
Going 1 down after 15 wasn’t the best of starts, but we regrouped and managed to go into the break 3-1 up with goals from
Taylor (pen) Ross and then Michael. It was crucial to have such a good lead at the break as playing into the wind 2nd half
was always going to be tough.
As expected they came at us 2nd half, but the back 4 were superb and as the keeper, I had little to do, thankfully. Despite
their best attempts to break us down, it was us who went on to score again. Dave, decided to ignore the easy tap in and do
his best to miss, then sit on his arse while he waited for the ball to fall from the sky and then tap it in from a yard out,
knowing Dave, he probably meant it, he’s a bit flashy like that.
This shook the oppo, and they continued to demonstrate their lack of class, mainly their big fella in CM, who should have
been off by now if the ref had anything about him. They managed to pull one back to make it 4-2 with about 15 left, their
6’3 CF finally winning a header against Taylor, who, as much as it hurts me to say looked very good in his new long term
position as a Centre back(We can all agree the legs are gone for him to play CM anymore especially with the youth of Bonsu
and Knight available) alongside Stephen who after a 5 week layoff was superb also. Cries of ‘’they have collapsed before’’
started to ring out from their cocky number 7, however not this time mate. We held strong and managed to add one more,
Marlon used himself as an offside decoy, and with the back 4 waving hands in the air and ignoring Max who raced through
from halfway before sliding it past the keeper, ignoring his brother Josh who would have had an empty net to roll it into, to
make it 5. It finished like that and the 7s have their first league win of the season after 5 attempts, onwards and upwards
please.
This weekend cup action again, Junior Novets cup is one we are looking to do well in, so 100% commitment required from
the lads, early to bed Friday, bowl of porridge not a bacon roll for breakfast and everyone, even you follow the example of
Paul Taylor, to arrive on time on Saturday.
MOM - Have to give it to Michael, had lumps kicked out of him all day, scored a crucial goal, and didn't give that thug of a
CM a minutes peace
Meads 8th v Alleyn OB 6ths L 2 – 4

Early exit for the 8ths in the first round of the LOB Cup against a team we were more than capable of beating. This seems to
be the story of our season so far. Collectively our defence has been playing poorly, not helped by not having a settled back
four, due to injuries and non-availabilities, but Saturday’s defeat was just down to three bad individual errors, which cost us
dearly. We are certainly under-performing at present and confidence is low. However, we have to look at the positives, we
have only lost one league game, we have a number of injured players returning and if we cut out the basic errors then we
are more than capable of beating anyone in our division and having a good run in the AFA Cup. MOM Lum : outstanding
performance, great goal and assist for the second.

Heading off across the road to our historic rivals we had an air of optimism following our very good performance against
Carthusians 2 weeks before, Derek had assured me that I had the full backing of the board at least up until Christmas .So all
good I thought, the writing was on the wall when Deadly informed me that there would be absolutely no funds available to
me in the January transfer window to strengthen the squad so I'm scouting for those I can get on a free.
In all seriousness we were never really out of this game and actually played very well in parts the difference being they had
the out and out goal scorer up front who did nothing at all but score three goals.
All of which were great finishes, Having said that we are victims of our own downfall at times making wrong decisions in
crucial areas resulting in us losing possession and getting caught with sucker punches, we went in a half time 2-1 down but
it has. To be said could and should have been 3-2 up after missing two more than very good chances, Kemal scored a very
good goal following a good team move with Alex skipping round the full back to cross to Kemal.
The second half was pretty much the same story they got a goal when the ball hit the post and went in we battled on and
replied with a header from Neil following a nice ball from new boy Rob, We hit the inside of the post only to see the ball run
along the goal line and be cleared.
Then a bad decision culminated in their 4th and killer goal, It's not all bad we have played all the top sides and never been
out played, we have to play them all again at home where we need to take the points, I said this is a good standard of
football and so it's proving to be, It's also very enjoyable as we are trying to play good football instead of lumping it, The
spirit is good the work rate is good so I'm sure it will come good.

The vets are indeed in a transitional phase with the younger players trying to bed in along with a few new signings,,,,,,well
it's good enough for LVG so it's good enough for me,
