Old Meadonians’ Press Release 17.11.14 London Old Boys’ Senior Cup Oakhill Tigers 1 Old Meadonians 4. Oakhill Tigers, Old Meadonians’ latest opponents in the London Old Boys’ Senior Cup, promised to be a more testing banana skin than other lower division teams Meads have met in this season. Tigers are on the crest of a wave, albeit two divisions below, having won all six of their league games with a healthy goal difference of 14 to Meads’ record of four wins and two losses out of their six, with a goal difference of thirteen and to their credit, Tigers provide superb facilities and an immaculately maintained first team pitch at their Southgate estate. On top of that the hosts then proceeded to take an unexpected lead on the quarter as Meads’ keeper Gary Robinson waved goodbye to a twenty yard shot he had covered when it was accidentally deflected beyond his reach by a prowling Tiger. However, the hosts proved themselves to have more cup-fighting spirit than ability to back up any threat offered and, into the bargain, stirred up a regular hornets’ nest as Meads hit back with a stinging string of six corners. From the last of these, taken by Jack Costello, Craig Jones reacted quickly to stab in from close in on the half hour. Before half time Meads had bared their teeth by hitting the woodwork twice and having one kicked off the line but had also taken the lead with a goal later suggested by joint coach Paul Rumley as a candidate for goal of the season, when Ryan Bright picked up the ball twenty yards out and crashed it into the top right hand corner. The second half saw the hosts showing their mettle by taking the attack to the visitors but having no joy, firstly with Meads’ keeper Gary Robinson pulling off two saves within five minutes of the restart, a timely grab in a one on one and by keeping his legs in reserve to stop a second shot and thereafter, Meads’ back four again became as intransigent as ever. The hosts had also repeated their mistake of the first half by provoking retaliation as Meads scored two in the last five minutes. By this time fresh legs were on and Bright had taken on the role of provider with accurate and controlled crosses. One of these from a free-kick gave John Shea the opportunity to volley in at the far post. Meads’ fourth started with Robinson’s long clearance down the right which was headed on by the soaring Ed Glover into the path of Dave Brennan and he centred for Shea to head in firmly from ten yards. I'll keep it brief. Score decent goals. Make ridiculous defensive mistakes, don't take responsibility at set plays, aren't brave enough and lack character when game isn't going our way. Not a formula which will win many games. Started the better side, playing some good stuff. Could never build any momentum in the match as when we got a goal, we gave one away. Played well and went into the break 3-2 down. Second half we fell apart. Were reckless, lost our shape, discipline in position and lacked composure. After two very good performances and thinking we'd turned a corner this was very hard to take. Meads 7s (4) vs Acton 8s (3) Williams – J. Kearney – Richardson – Dussard – Wynne (Martin) – Wright – Yorath (M.Kearney) – Bonsu – Porter (Irish) – Knight – Ellison Ha ha ha, Look at them, there is only 12 of them and 2 of them are already limping and 2 more are even older than Dusty and Joe…. we said as they warmed up.On a high from last week (first league win) we went into this game with some confidence for a change… perhaps too much, going by our first half display. We were poor and for some reason turned into a team of individuals. We ended up going in at the break 2-1 down, from there only 2 shots on goal, with Ross scoring ours. GAME CHANGER:2-1 down at the break, was it the removal of Joe Porter (only joking godfather Joe) or was it the introduction of Liam Irish? Was it we were now playing 4-4-2 rather than 4-5-1 or was it they were now down to 10 men (with 1 still limping) as 2 of their players left injured (they actually left!!) Whatever it was, it didn’t take us long to get back to 2-2 after Liam miskicked a shot which allowed Max to get on the end of it, with a trade mark run across the goal and the delicate of touches to knock it in from 7 yards out. Mark then added a 3rd, to make it 2 in 2 for him, this coming from a quick corner between Dave and Michael. Michael, was then to add a 4th and good work by Liam and with 15 to go, game was in the bag (remember they only have 10)!!Well, we like to entertain, our defending at times does that as much as our attacking, and a mix up at the back (I’ll cover Dusty here and take full responsibility) ended in a penalty, another soft one, after Mark tapped their striker on the back of the leg. They managed to score to make it 4-3. Game back on!! They had 2/3 more chances to equalise but scuffed their chances…. Luckily for us.A win is a win and we are still in both cups, we managed to get a lovely away tie somewhere in East London, one day we will hopefully make it look as easy as the low in morale 8th team  Here is a photo of Liam walking Here are some photos of more Meads players walking and Paul Whelan walking off with Stanners retirement chair. Oh and Dusty trying to tackle his own player… Meads 8s 8 (eight) - 1 Old Bealonians Squad:- Richards, Piper, Smith, Duckett, Terry, Graham-Collins, Berisha, Coyne, Balogen, Eggl, Hurley, Ringo, Ryan Scorers:- Hurley (3), Eggl (3), Piper (1), Berisha (1) Only the toughest of hearts would fail to have a little sympathy for Old Beals on Saturday. They made the long old trek over from my old stomping ground Essex, but were never once anywhere near being in the game. Nice blokes, but unfortunately, for them, not great. If I'm honest, we made heavy work of the initial exchanges, but once we opened the scoring and settled down (nerves were still apparent from previous results) it was one way traffic. I can't remember the exact order of goals, but a Hurley penalty opened the scoring, with the evergreen striker adding a further two. Young buck Max helped himself to a hattrick and if not for at least 5 off side decisions, could have doubled that tally. Danny P grabbed a well taken goal after returning from a long term injury and Mr Berisha got in on the scoring act also. Was nice to see the boys playing with a smile on their face and what defending we had to do was done very well. Apart from the last 10-minutes when we did get bit goal hungry and lost our shape (and conceded) we treated the game and the oppo with respect they deserved. We tried to do the right things throughout and whilst much tougher challenges will follow, this should give us a nice confidence booster moving onwards. Injury crisis has hopefully abated a bit, and sure we can recreate these kind of performances regularly, against tougher oppo, once the team settles down and confidence improves. Thanks to Gary for playing in goal (never seen him more animated than when they scored) and Danny P, Ringo and Kevin for stepping it at late notice. MoM:- joint award to the hattrick heroes Gareth and Max 9THS Old Meadonians 9th 4 – 5 Alexandra Park 7ths AET (M Walcott 2?, Smith, J Walcott) Not for the first time this season the 9ths fell victim of the club selection policy with two no shows\late cry-offs. With four of last season’s team playing for higher sides we’re continually encouraged to pick players who let us down. Fortunately Matthew Walcott was a late volunteer and John who came along to watch put on a kit at the side of the pitch. The description ‘club legend’ is often inappropriately used in match reports but John is certainly worthy of the title. Alexandra Park’s 7ths are riding high at the top of their division, above their own 6th team and on paper are tougher opposition than we’d normally face. After 20 mins the pre-match stats lived up to the billing. We were 0-3 down chasing shadows against a younger, fitter and quicker side than ourselves. It wasn’t that we started badly, but AP had a striker worthy of their 1st team (a confession later made) and a centre midfielder who was doing a worthy impression of Xavi, who between them breezed through our defense. I can’t give you much detail of what actually happened as I was struggling to breathe but I remember getting fairly annoyed at the showboating, whooping and encouragement of hatricks. What followed may not have been pretty or gained too many Spirit of Football points but in true Old Meads fashion the 9’s got stuck into AP. Matthew scored our first before half time, which was just reward for his fantastic work rate and skill running at AP’s defense. A key moment was Julian saving a penalty at 1-3; a casual chip down the centre of the goal summed up AP’s nonchalance. We went up the other end and scored soon after. 2-3. Iffy scored a superb freekick to equalize. 3-3. I think AP scored next and then John Walcott scored from long range 4-4. During the last 15 minutes Meads were in the ascendency and could have won in normal time with George and Matthew both having one on ones saved after great individual runs. FT 4-4. Extra time. The match was decided by AP’s star striker who had been starved of service for so long that he took the game into his own hands and picked up the ball near the halfway line flew through a few crude challenges before finishing well. 45. The 9’s had a couple of half chances to equalize in the fog but AP clung on to the win. Credit to AP, they were a good bunch of lads with several very good players who shouldn’t really be playing at our level. As for the 9’s every man had a storming game considering the circumstances, certainly no shame in this defeat.
