Amateur Football Combination Premier Division Old Minchendenians 2 Old Meadonians 2
After a four week sojourn on the trail of the three cups that they enter, on Saturday Old Meadonians travelled to Southgate
hoping to play catch up in a resumed league programme against mid-table Old Minchendenians who are in the process of
rebuilding the team that had won them the A.F.C. Premiership twice and the A.F A. Senior Cup in the last four seasons.
However, Meads’ had a pre-match set back when versatile defender Lawrie Pointer, coming back from injury, broke down in
the warm-up and hopes were dented by hosts who, despite still needing to fully find their feet and being behind the eight
ball for three quarters of the match, never gave up and snatched two points from the visitors courtesy of a fortuitous drop of
the ball and some naïve last minute defending. Meads were two up at half time thanks to two excellent headers from
centre-back Ali McCombe, the first, towering, on twenty five minutes, from Kevin Quinn’s in-swinging corner and the second,
opportunist, ten minutes later when John Shea headed a deep corner back across goal for McCombe to finish at the far post.
Meads started the second half in control and five minutes in were unlucky when the ball came back off the underside of the
bar from a Craig Jones twenty yard free-kick. Almost immediately Aidan Chapman had a shot cleared of the line and then
they had the chance to expand their cushion on the hour when Craig Jones rounded the keeper only to put the ball past the
post after getting a giant bobble from the cut up pitch. With twenty minutes to go the persevering hosts put on a mini-blitz
with which the visitors were coping admirably until a Minches’ corner was headed clear but hit sub Jack Holmes on the back
and fell nicely for a strike from the edge of the box to thread through traffic past the unsighted Meads’ keeper Gary
Robinson. Worse was to come as with five minutes to go shell shocked Meads, instead of shutting up shop were suckered
into over-extending themselves and a swift counter saw a Minches’ striker rounding Robinson for the equaliser. Post-match
the hosts were much more hospitable in their revamped bar but had to wait for Meads’ joint coach, the usually sanguine
Paul Rumley to appear after he had found it necessary to take a solo stroll around the ground to allow his head to clear and
his equilibrium to return. However, return he did to demonstrate that his sagacity was capable of dealing with the raw edges
left on a squad sore over the debilitating negative rub of the green.

Gowers, Glover, Jones, Goode, Holmes.

Meads 3s made the journey to Economicals for yet another trek of an away game! With the 4-1 loss still in
our minds from the reverse fixture back in November, revenge was on our agenda.
We all arrived at the ground in good time which gave us the opportunity to do a proper warm up which
helped- especially myself Rash and Freddie who were hanging from the night before!
The game started positively for us with crisp passes throughout the side which gave us confidence.
Economicals had the earlier chances with their striker missing from 2 yards out from a counter attack from
our corner! Taxiiiii!
However this was worked as a catalyst for us which sprung us into action. Tim and Jeusy were working well
as a pair up front with the wingers looking to attack the opposition full backs. A positive for us was that we
were working hard without the ball which gave us the platform to play some great football. We were creating
some half chances and shots from distance but nothing of note - ash had a free kick over the bar and Daniel
hit a long distance strike high, wide and handsome! On about the 30 minute mark Jeusy got slipped in by Ash
and used Tommy's overlap as a decoy to place a beauty in the far corner (ala the great Thierry Henry) - 1-0!!
This goal has been coming for Jeusy who has been putting in some impressive performances in lately in the
absence of our talisman Dwayne. After the goal we played our best football for a long time, Tommy and
Daniel working well in midfield and dominating things with some nice passing. Rasheed was making some
positive runs at the full back and the defence were marshalling proceedings with Tim making good decisions
in terms of coming off his line (Hugo loris would be proud)
HT - 1-0
Economicals came out a lot stronger in the second half, their best player (number 8) getting a bit of joy.
They had a series of corners which we dealt with well, Luke and Andrea winning a series of headers. We were
getting a lot of joy on the counter attack, with Freddie nearly finding the far corner with a great effort tipped
round the post. Jeusy had some half chances and Tim had an audacious overhead kick saved by the keeper.
As the old saying goes, a 1-0 lead is a precarious position and the fact we didn't get a second goal could have
come back to haunt us. However we showed great spirit and determination (something we were lacking
earlier this season) to see the late flurry off from Economicals.
A great team performance all round which was positive. Everyone put in a shift and earned their post match
baguette and crisps! Mom went to Andrea who was a collosal at CB.
4th Team – nothing submitted
5th Team – Report by Luke Tierney
In what turned out to be a hard fought victory the Meads 5s almost threw away the chance of a semi-final.
Having stormed out of the blocks against a somewhat deflated side (injuries?) we could've been 3-0 up after
15. Instead we were 1 after a neat layoff from joey left Adam to score from 8 yards.
The game seemed like it could only go one way until a goal kick alluded the defence with the wind sure to
claim an assist as on the half sliding volley their striker first time lobbed Ricardo in goal. 1-1 and disbelief
especially considering a clear penalty hadn't been given to Meads when Luke was clattered by the goalie.
A lot of chances and a few goals followed. Their wingers cross again being caught by the wind and going in.
Our clearance being stopped by the wind for Matt to come from 10yards behind in a defensive mixup and go
around the keeper to tap in. They scored another,then Joey slotted in at near post.
Somehow we had to go to extra time with Matts earlier described goal bringing us to 3-3 and relieved. Extra
time and a lot of tired legs (everyone) and passion (looking at you Marv!) led to a tense finale. With a
freekick 20yards out Marv settled it shooting through the wall and squirming under the goalie. Deserved win
but made a meal of it. Who cares though as we've got a semi-final to think about
Edit – What Luke failed to mention was the absence of the gaffer again, not just this game but all cup games
to date… surely can’t pick himself for the Semi-Final? 
6th Team – Report by Lewis Taylor Old Whits – 4 Meads 6's - 4
One of the most stressful weeks leading into a match with no GK, only 3 defenders, a recall for Elder, two
newbies and the realisation that Waygood may have to play in an area of the pitch that requires tackling.
Facing the side who'd scored 16 goals in two games against the 6's last season we did not expect much from
this game, well apart from conceding. With two minutes to go before kick-off Jayson, who lives in Croydon
(location of match), still hadn't arrived. We'd had the usual "I'm here" text 10 minutes earlier but still it
looked like we'd kick off a man down.
In the distance he was then spotted taking a casual stroll across toward the pitch, now this is the same
Jayson who's encouraged to slow down his game as his feet are too quick for him.
The pre-game 'banter' was all about the return of Elder and his wonderful Blue Superman pyjama bottoms
that he decided he'd be wearing under his kit.
Anyway, into the game and we started very well, breaking on the opposition with pace and great movement
from the front 4. We took the lead and although the home side did put pressure on the back 3, they coped
well, helped out by the 3 central midfielders. On a difficult pitch we looked to make the most from our set
plays and scored from two well worked corners, one of which had been planned before kick-off.
We took a 0-2 lead and ended the half 1-3 up. Into the second half and as expected our midfield and defence
did start to lose energy and drop deeper, the home side made the most of this but still relied on a few
individual mistakes from us to get back in the game. At 3-4 we had a couple of great chances to get a fifth but
it wasn't to be and with time running out Whits got their equaliser. Most would think this would feel like defeat
after leading but the commitment and effort all 11 players showed was tremendous and I was satisfied with a
point.
7th Team – Report by Robert Williams
Guildford 1s (3) vs Meads 7s (2)
Another week another defeat. Half way through season and the 7s are rooted to the bottom of the table with
only one league win all season. Our other point (yep we only have 4) came in the first fixture between both
teams before Xmas. That day we fought back a couple of times and we almost repeated it on Saturday.
Couple of new signings were needed due to injuries and holidays and not wanting to disrupt other teams the
week before a big cup game (note to other captains), a credit to all who arrived in good time and all looked
fired up for what is now confirmed as a relegation battle (as if it hadn’t already!!). We had the return of two
of the 7th team prodigal sons, with Lionel been called up from the 9s (He has a car and Guildford is far) And
Liam Irish making a welcome return after his recent fall out with management (They all come back
eventually)
Newish signing Dom getting the start this week on the left of midfield and the return of Liam who has not had
much game time all season was tasked with leading the line with top goal scorer Ross (who has stopped
scoring) Marlon who has consistently been one of our better players this season (done well for the 8s also
with his open goal miss in the big game) started right with Corin & Danny starting CM. A new back four of
Lionel (He has a car and Guildford is far) starting at RB, Josh shifting to LB and another new CB pairing of
James and Gareth, with myself in goal (Jake says life is too busy at the moment but what we have found out
is he has a girlfriend now so not allowed to come out and play with his mates). The one sub been Max who
passed the first 15 minutes doing keepy ups on the side-line in an effort to remain warm.
For a team that had pretty much been patched together last minute we started well. One thing Lionel (he has
a car and Guildford is far) will bring to any team is a lot of chat, which we are guilty of not normally having
enough of. The back 4 were well organised with Newbie Gareth getting more confident as the mins past.
James was commanding well and not much was getting past Lionel or Josh out wide, with the help of
Dom/Marlon and Max when he came on from the wings.
However they ended up taking the lead, a soft free kick against Corin was quickly taken (Corin! Stop the
free-kick not stop and chat with the ref) which resulted in another free-kick 20 yards down the line when
James sent their striker rolling down the hill despite his claims he got the ball!! The ball was whipped in and
volleyed into the net while as a team we stood and watched. We went into the break 1-0 down but we knew
we had enough to get something out of the game.
Again we started the 2nd half strongly and was not long before the score was 1-1, some great work from
Marlon on the right set Corin through on goal who finished neatly past the keeper. We should have kicked on
from that but we seemed to do the opposite. A corner for Guildford went straight out but on the run back to
his position their CB berated the ref for what he believed should have been a penalty for a push on him from
Danny. Funnily enough a few minutes later the ref awards a penalty for a push on that CB from another
corner, can’t help but think the abuse received mins earlier helped the decision. Penalty was slotted home
and not long after it was 3-1 when a mix up at the back allowing their CM to lob in from 20 yards!
We came back strong again and scrambled in a 2nd when Danny nodded in the rebound from James header.
We had a couple more ½ chances but failed to repeat the 3-3 from a few weeks ago. Overall another
disappointing day at the office but with games in hand plenty of time left to survive. Need to beat Glyn Old
Boys this weekend… they only beat us 8-2 in the return fixture at the start of the season, so should be close


8th team – Report by Dave Terry Meads 8s 5 - 1 Old Sedcopians Scorers;- Balogen (2), Eggl, Elder,
Simon
Squad: - Challice, Smith, Barnett, Piper, Ring, Balogen, Berisha, D Elder, Hurley, Eggl, Simon, Terry, Holland
A very good run out for the 8s this weekend, with some great football and effort on display. That being said,
we didn't always have it our own way, particularly in the first half (despite being 3-1 up). Sedcopians hit the
cross bar and missed a penalty. We soon overcome our hesitancy and the second half we were pretty
dominant and should have added to the goal tally.
The goals where all good finishes, with the pick of the bunch being Dans left footed drive from 20-odd yards
out. Eggl added to his tally and kept himself in the hunt for the Golden Boot, hassling the defense and
finishing well after a run from 40-yards out, Abbey grabbed himself a well taken brace and Deano twisted
and turned in the box to poke home.
The only real criticism is we did get a tad gun ho towards the end of the game, which can happen when
winning well. Even then Sedcopians where snuffed out but the 8s usual endeavor, or didn't have the quality
to take advantage. We will need to be more disciplined against better sides.
Cup semi-final coming up, and the boys are all fired up and looking forward to it. West Wickham 7s are pretty
much a Vets side, so our older heads will need to show all their experience, with the more youthful among us
hassling and taking advantage of their younger legs. Hope to report a St Valentine’s Day massacre (in our
favour obviously) next week.

9th Team – Report by Gabriel Woodall
7/2/15 Meadonians IX 3 – 3 Old Tiffinians III / G Woodall G Toft S Brown
Be it bums squeaking or asses twitching, the 9s could sense pre match that the Manchester-coined idiom now
bore more than just a little resemblance to their own season’s end. Maximum points in all five fixtures would
put the 9s in touching distance of their first title since the days of black and white football when all men were
called Albert and everyone wore a hat to the game. Anything other than a win would mean relying heavily on
the misfortunes of our league rivals. I think we all quickly realised this game would be won or lost on tight
margins, decisive moments. Tiffinians looked strong from the off, with experienced and talented players right
down the spine of the team. Then again, 9s haven’t been top all season on account of luck, and it was Meads
who struck first; exploiting Tiffin’s high defensive line, I managed to coax the ball to the edge of the area
before shooting high to score. 1-0. With less than 10 minutes of the first half remaining, Tiffin replied in quite
astonishing style, a 25-yard left-foot volley from their increasingly dangerous midfield beanpole left most of
us open-mouthed. 1-1. We hadn’t switched on before they scored their second – and neat move and clever
finish over keeper Nathan – and we found ourselves behind (the first time this season from a winning
position). 2-1. George presented me with my easiest chance of the season (so far) minutes before the break
but I duly sent the ball into orbit. Crucially, we had the wind with us for the second half, and it took the 9s no
time before levelling; Billy’s pick-out pass saw George round the keeper and – just about – finish the chance.
Pretty much from this moment it was all Meads pressure, and we’d be mugs if we didn’t score
next.Whadayaknow? We go 3-2 down – Billy’s miscontrol sees 2nd half goalie Greening attempt to clear up,
only for his kick to find their unmarked centre forward with an empty goal in front of him. Nevertheless, we
kept on pressing, but our finishing was just off today – Steve, George and Paul all had good chances to
equalise. Thankfully it came with 10 or so left, through a penalty won in thanks to my cross, Steve’s fall and
Scott’s converted spot kick. There was still time for my second, nightmare-inducing miss; Steve’s skill and
cross to the back post should have been rewarded with a headed goal, but I managed to find a flailing
Tiffinian body part instead of the back of the net, despite being effectively over the line myself. Finishing with
a draw didn’t seem unfair – this was a very good side, though almost certainly a different line-up to what
they put out most weeks, looking at their poor league position – but we left the field feeling rather regretful,
in the knowledge that mistakes at either end cost us a vital win.
Man of the Match: Pete the Pole, for selflessly sacrificing his promised half hour for the good of the team.

just come back from the game and cant wait to rite in me dairy.
i meen im no filosifer but it was ritten in the stars that i wud score today.
Cant believe it woz disaloud coz of off side i meen im a rite back. well thats ware im played by the manager, i
shud be in midfield.
I lost my rag today, i meen inuff is inuff that bubble that plays at the back is doing my ead in,

Vets report Lyonians 1 vs Meadonians 1 – By Steve Kearney
Another game, another disappointing afternoon.
It started with us being kept locked out of the ground on the main road until 40 mins before kick-off.
I mean hardly the best prep for a relegation battle, this was confounded by the referee that came into our
dressing room to reel off all the professional football clubs he had played for 50 years ago, along with every
injury he had ever endured.
Could this game be all about him we wondered.
It’s not an exaggeration that we totally dominated play in the first half creating countless chances that lacked
the final product, , seems to be a pattern emerging here.
Then as if by chance Dino had a mistimed soft tackle on the edge of our box on which the forward lunged
forward 3 yards claiming he was in the box,
The ref came running (jogging from his space in the centre circle) to shout i could send you off for that as he
was the last man even though our other defender was 3 yards behind the offence. Hmmmm
Then a matter of moments after.
Jaime made a good run down the right and was tussled over by a defender , Jaime gave the guy a small
push as he got up and walked away, only for the defender to lash out with a wild kick that luckily
missed but was clearly violent conduct,
The ref saw this and said oh well there were no punches thrown so let’s get on with it.Hmmmm
The first half finished 0-0 and the frustration was evident, but we were still optimistic and knew that if we
kept up the pressure they would crack.
Finally we scored when Allen Kerr did a couple of clever tricks before unleashing a great shot into the top left
hand corner, a truly deserving winning goal or so we thought.
Then the match defining point. Lee Walsh our right back made a run from deep inside his own half following a
clearance Allen who was in an offside position but making no attempt to play the ball at all simply let it go to
allow Lee to run through and score from 25 yards out, the oppos linesman had his flag in the air ( no doubt
