Inauguration Day
We welcomed our 2015 new students to Craighead on
Inauguration Day last Saturday. This day provided a
wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know each other,
and for our new students to choose their subjects and meet new friends even
before the school year begins. We are extremely proud of the current students
who spoke so beautifully in the formal morning session. Thanks to all those
who assisted on the day, especially our Deans, Option teachers, members of
the Uniform Committee and our Catering staff.
Craighead Cook Book
Congratulations to Susanna Izard, Marcia Scott and Karen Rolleston and their
team on the recent publication of the Craighead cook book “Peckish: for
fledgling cooks and those who need inspiration”. As well as tried and true
recipes from the School community, the format itself is a visual symphony, full
of unique and interesting extracts from Craighead archives of the past 100
years. We hope that you support and share in our excitement for this stylish
cookbook which will become a treasure, not to mention a wonderful Christmas
gift. Each family is asked to please try to sell a minimum of three books, as all
proceeds go directly to our Development Programme. If this proves difficult,
please return them to the office in new condition. Further details about the
cook book are available on the Craighead Cookbook Facebook page.
NCEA examinations are off to a smooth start, under the watchful eye of Mr
Peter Maslin. We appreciate the willingness of members of our school
community who support our students through offering their services as either
invigilators or reader/writers. Many staff are continuing to offer their on-going
support for our students through extra tutorials. This
week we welcomed back the Year 7 and 8 students
from their camp near Akaroa, where they had an
excellent week of activities, thanks to the organisation
of Mrs Ottley and Ms Walker.

Two of our Year 10 students were invited to participate
in the Armistice Day service on Tuesday at 11.11am.
Thanks to Emma Williams and Jessica Coleman who
represented the school so well at the service.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
JUNIOR AORAKI VOLLEYBALL
As parents will be aware, Craighead Diocesan has committed itself to an
ambitious $8.5 million development project comprising the new senior
boarding wing, a new gymnasium and associated teaching spaces, and the
restoration of our historic Shand House. The current focus of the
campaign is upon identifying and working with potential large donors and
philanthropists. Their generosity is essential if the campaign targets are
to be achieved.
Last Friday, a group of Year 9 and
10 students took part in the
Junior
Aoraki
Volleyball
Competition. Although we did
not take out a placing, the girls
played with a fun, competitive
spirit and enjoyed having at least
four games where they could
practice and improve their skills.
It was exciting watching the Year
9 team and the talent that is
coming through for future years
at Craighead. A big thank you
must go to the wonderful Year
11
coaches
who
helped
throughout the day.
At the start of 2015, a wider community campaign will commence. Some
exciting events and festivities are planned with details in the new
year. Follow this on our successful Facebook page which is part of our
alumni development, connecting past students and the wider Craighead
family with the school.

GERMAN
The weather was on our side as
Year 10 German students departed
on scooters from school in different
directions, heading for Caroline Bay.
As part of a Unit on Directions, the
students worked in groups and
wrote directions in German to get
to the Bay, taking a variety of routes. Once there, we shared a tasty picnic
which was an interesting mix of German and Kiwi food culture, including
salami, pretzels, carrots with onion dip, lollies and a very impressive
Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest gateau)! The outing was a great
success and fortunately, there were no scooter-related injuries!

ROWING
The Craighead Rowing Squad had our first regatta of the season on 1st and
2nd November. The Aoraki’s 1km Regatta consists of many races that have
50% novice and 50% senior rowers in each crew, but also has 100% novice
crews, and open categories for seniors to enter into as well. This is to give
the novice rowers their first taste of racing under the supervision of seniors
to help them get to their races on time, set up in the blocks before the race
begins, and race crews from other schools at a full pace. We had a very
successful regatta with some great results, including the two full novice
quads being place second and third in their race, and other senior and
novice crews gaining a range of top three placings. This regatta was a
fantastic start to the season, and we are all looking forward to what the
next few months will bring for us.

TENNIS
Congratulations to Matilda Hayman (Girls 12s) and
Kate Harvey (Girls 14s) who represented South
Canterbury at the Southern Teams Championships in
Dunedin last weekend. The South Canterbury team was placed first
overall against Southland, Southern Lakes, Otago and North Otago.
