THURSDAY 16 OCTOBER 2014
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Nga mihi nui te whanau o Craighead, tena koutou katoa.
Term 4 has started with a school-wide focus on kindness. It
is such a busy and often emotional time in the lead up to
external examinations that we need to look out for each
other. A challenge has been issued to all our school
community to look for opportunities for ‘Random Acts of Kindness’!
Craighead’s Global Citizens group shared their vision for World Peace in
Assembly, and their plans for creating a Peace Garden in front of the new
Senior Boarding wing. We then formed a whole-school peace symbol to show
our support for World Peace (see photo below).
Our Parents’ and Friends’
Committee
are
a
very
committed team of parent
volunteers, ably led by
Chairperson Teresa Templeton
and
her
Deputy
Pippa
Goodwin.
They
actively
support major social events in
the
school
(such
as
Grandparent afternoon teas
and School balls), assist with
fundraising and provide service
in the form of working bees
when required. Building upon
the bean bags and microwaves provided in 2013, this year Parents’ and
Friends’ kindly funded the new hexagonal picnic tables for the dining room
lawn and supported the student-led initiative of purchasing new House Teardrop Flags. Designed by outgoing Student BOT Representative, Tessa McNab,
these flags were proudly displayed for the first time in Assembly yesterday. As
a school community, we are very grateful for the on-going work of the
Craighead Parents’ and Friends’ committee.
We are very proud of the many achievements by Craighead students in their
various sporting pursuits over the holidays, with some excellent performances
in Basketball, Clay Target Shooting, Equestrian and Rowing. The Variety
Fundraiser concert this Saturday evening provides an opportunity to showcase
the musical, dance and cultural talents of
both staff and students. We do hope you join
us for an evening of spectacular
entertainment in our Auditorium at 7.30pm.
God Bless

COMMITTEE, CULTURAL AND SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHS
These photographs were taken last term and are now on display in the
Auditorium along the corridor by the ladies’ toilets. If you or your
daughter wish to purchase any photos, envelopes are available there to
make an order. Orders are to be brought to the school office with money
enclosed.
BASKETBALL
Congratulations to Emma Trolove who has been
selected for the NZ Koru’s U18 Basketball team to
compete in Australia in January 2015.
ROWING
We have just enjoyed a successful October Training Camp, the first for the
rowing season. While the weather was fine, warm and calm for most of
the week, Friday and Saturday were the exceptions. Hail, sleet and at
times a very cold wind tested the girls and coaches.
Singles Regatta
Well done to the girls who competed. This regatta was postponed from
Saturday to Sunday due to the weather, and this affected a few girls who
had prior commitments. Congratulations to Jessica Martin and Maddison
Palmer who came second and third in their age group, and Olivia Hughes
who came second in her age group.
Interprovincial Regatta
Alice Murdoch, Renee Olley, Kate Hurst, Jessica Martin and Olivia Hughes
represented Canterbury U20 at this event. Kate, Jessica and Olivia were in
the sculling events and Alice and Renee in the sweeping events. Well
done to Alice and Renee for winning the pair, and for being part of the
crew that won the four and open eight events. Kate, Jessica and Olivia
came third in the U20 Quad, with Jessica and Olivia third in the U20
double. Overall, Canterbury was third behind Otago and Southland.
Corporate Rowing
Our corporate team, made up of Craighead parents and ex pupils, is
practising on Sundays in preparation for the regatta in November.
EQUESTRIAN
Congratulations to Amalia Rowley
(Year 9) who won the Senior section
(age 17 and over) at the South Island
Pony Clubs’ Springston Trophy, in
Middlemarch in the holidays—a
remarkable feat for a young rider
competing out of her age group. Eight
other Craighead students represented
various South Canterbury Pony Clubs,
competing in very trying weather
conditions for impressive results.
CONSTANCE A RÉUSSI!
Félicitations to Constance Brown
who has won the national Year
12 Alliance Française Concours
Oral.
In
the
national
examination, Constance had to
converse in French with the
adjudicator for 15-20 minutes
about three different topics. This
year, the first topic was about
herself, her interests and her
future plans. The second and
third topics were chosen at
random from fifteen topics. There
is no preparation time allowed so a student has to be able to think on the
spot, use the wide range of language expected, and not panic!

Yvonne Thompson—Boarding Manager
There are many items in Lost Property, unclaimed from
Term 3. These include School clothing, sneakers and plastic
lunch boxes among other items. I have a stainless steel
watch with a pink face that no one has claimed. As well, a
number of House badges have been handed in to me.
Please check whether your daughter has lost any of these items. Thank
you to those who have named School uniform articles. It is so much easier
to return them to their owners when they are lost.
