BNSF Railway: A Transportation Leader
BNSF Railway is one of North America’s leading railroads, operating over
32,500 route miles of track in the western two-thirds of the United States and
Canada, covering 28 states and two provinces.
As a global leader in intermodal transportation (the transport of truck trailers
and containers by rail), BNSF delivers a wide variety of the domestic and
international consumer goods in the United States, including appliances,
clothes, computers, electronic products, new vehicles, packaged goods,
paper products, televisions and much more.
Our partnerships with ocean carriers and trucking companies allow us to
provide streamlined supply chain solutions to connect manufacturers and
retailers to their markets. More than four million intermodal trailers and
containers are transported each year on BNSF’s rail lines instead of on the
nation’s congested highways. Just one BNSF intermodal train can take 280
trucks off our nation’s long distance highways.
LPKC Intermodal Facility
BNSF Railway’s newest state-of-the-art facility, the Logistics Park Kansas
City (LPKC) Intermodal Facility, is ideally located in the nation’s heartland,
and has been designed to accommodate the growing demands of freight rail
transportation.

The Green Transportation Solution
Railroads are the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly mode of surface transportation.
Freight railroads transport more than 40 percent of the country’s freight volume, but account for just
2.4 percent of all transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.
BNSF is an industry leader in driving more environmentally sensitive freight transportation solutions.
By moving tons of freight 480 miles on a single gallon of fuel, BNSF can help with carbon footprint
reductions and fuel efficiencies.
LPKC is Environmentally Friendly
LPKC is built on BNSF’s decades of experience developing modern logistics facilities that are
environmentally friendly. Before construction began, BNSF participated in an extensive environmental
review process. Environmentally friendly features of LPKC include:
• Five all-electric wide-span cranes eliminate onsite emissions and reduce noise by:
• Eliminating the use of standard diesel cranes for loading and unloading containers
• Reducing the number of hostlers by stacking and moving containers
• Decreasing diesel locomotive use by reducing switching by spanning multiple, longer
loading tracks
• Automated gate systems reduce idling, braking and utilize shutdown rules for the power
units — providing optimal efficiency and enhanced security
• Welded / continuous rail and seamless pavement reduce noise
• Dark skylighting decreases glare and transient lighting
• Large conservation corridor will buffer noise and light
• Direct access to I-35 via the new Homestead Lane and Double Diverging Diamond Interchange
reduces idling, braking and emissions
