Introduction

Welcome to the November edition of Newsflash
This month our key focus has surrounded the recent decision to bring together all of Azlan’s
HP Enterprise specialists into a single integrated setup and create the largest dedicated HP
Enterprise team in the UK. Not only is this a hugely positive move but an opportunity to
maximise the available resources and provide our HP Partners with an optimum level of
support. Turn to page 19 for an interview with Andy Dow, Head of HP Enterprise Business for
Azlan, to find out more.
We recently held our Vendor Engagement Weekend at Heythrop Park, Oxford which
proved to be a great success. Within the exhibition hall 16 stands showcasing a range of
vendors from across the Tech Data portfolio met with the attendees and speaking slots from
Microsoft Lumia, Veeam and Xerox offered a great insight into the latest products available.
The next Vendor Engagement Weekend is booked for 14th May 2015 for our northern
partners – if you are interested in attending please email [email protected]
This time of the year is a particularly exciting one for Tech Data – not only is activity ramping
up in time for Christmas, but with new products arriving from HTC, Huawei, Acer, HP and
Archos, this is a great opportunity for our partners to engage with us and push for a fantastic
close to 2014.
Have a great month.

PC shipments in Western
Europe bounce back
PC
shipments in mature Western Europe markets grew 22.7% in the third
quarter of 2014, according to IDC, while shipments across EMEA reached
23.7 million units – a 10.4% increase year-on-year. Consumer demand
heavily contributed to the rise in portable PC shipments, with back-to-school a strong
influence. Commercial PC shipment growth in Western Europe was 12.5%.
Higher spend
expected this
Christmas holiday
T
he Consumer Electronics Association has forecast
that holiday spending on gadgets and other hightech gear this Christmas and New Year, will reach a
record $33.76 billion in the US this year. That’s a 2.5%
increase from 2013. PCs, smartphones, tablet computers,
televisions and video-game consoles are expected to
account for 51% of revenues generated.
Dates announced for Public Sector Show 2015
N
ext year’s Public Sector Show – will be the first and
largest post-election event of the year when it takes
place on 23rd June 2015 at ExCeL, London. Now
in its fifth year and well-established as a must-attend event
for senior public sector leaders, the show attracts over
2,000 decision makers and budget holders from local and
central government and the wider public sector with a
collective spend estimated at nearly £700 billion.
Tablet sales growth slows as
smartphones continue to rise
G
lobal tablet growth will increase by 11% this year, compared with 55% a year
ago, according to third-quarter projections from Gartner. The slowdown is due,
says the research firm, to the popularity of big-screen smartphones and ‘phablets’
and a slower refresh rate for tablets. The overall device market – comprising PCs, tablets,
ultramobiles, and mobile phones – is expected to be 2.4 billion units this year, up 3.2%.
Next-gen 4G chipsets to supercharge
drive more mobile miniaturisation
T
he next-generation 4G chipsets will emerge in the first half of 2015, and are
expected to be 30% cheaper and 20% smaller than existing offerings, paving the
way for a potential reduction in semiconductor packaging and testing costs.
Chips more popular than ever
S
ales of DRAM chips, processors and sensors for mobile devices will propel growth
of 7.2% in semiconductor sales, to a record $338 billion, this year according to
estimates by Gartner. The fastest area of revenue growth will be in DRAM, which
will generate revenue of $44.1 billion, growing by 26.3% year-on-year.

Fujitsu highlights added potential
for partners in workstation market
as sales continue to accelerate
F
ujitsu says that a revival in sales of workstations is
benefiting its reseller partners – and Tech Data can help
you make the most of that opportunity. With UK sales
up 116% year-on-year in the first half of 2014, according to
IDC, and a strong pipeline building for the final quarter of
2014, Fujitsu is ramping up investment to ensure partners
can take advantage.
Fujitsu appointed its first dedicated Product Manager for
professional workstations, Leigh Schvartz, last year and has
since made further investment by appointing John Spurgeon
as technical pre-sales specialist for workstations. Spurgeon
brings 14 years’ experience in the market with Compaq and
HP to the new role. Fujitsu is also recruiting an additional
sales specialist to meet higher demand for sales support on
CELSIUS workstations.
Fujitsu CELSIUS R940:
exceptional reliability with a
near-silent operation
Schvartz said: ‘We’ve seen a really powerful acceleration in
our workstation business and as it is high-value and
high-margin, that’s good news for partners. We have seen
some big wins against the competition and we are seeing
more enquiries coming in. That’s why we are redoubling our
effort around CELSIUS and investing in more product
specialists.’
More partners are also looking to workstations as a way to
drive higher profits and added value, he added. ‘Skilled
workers such as designers and engineers, forensics experts
and scientific researchers, need dedicated power and
performance that suits their needs precisely and enables
them to make full use of their expertise. With the
comprehensive configuration options we offer on CELSIUS,
partners can really add value for customers with demanding
requirements. More of our resellers are now promoting
workstation platforms and expressing interest in becoming

We’re very happy to help them do that of course.’
The latest additions to the CELSIUS family, the CELSIUS
M740 and R940, feature Intel Xeon E5 processors, the latest
graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD, and support up to
1TB of DDR4 memory. These new systems have just been
announced by the company and with all major system
components significantly up-rated, they present resellers
with a great opportunity to offer customers a dramatic
performance uplift on their current workstation
deployments.
Designed and manufactured at the Fujitsu factory in
Germany, the CELSIUS M740 and R940 models also offer
24x7 reliability, exceptional environmental credentials and
near-silent operation, with the M740 recorded at only
20dB(A).
These products have recently been announced and are
available from Tech Data. Search ‘CELSIUS’ on InTouch
for spec, pricing and ordering or speak to your sales contact
for further support.

Microsoft’s mix and match
plans make it easier for
SMBs to embrace Office 365
M
icrosoft has made changes to the subscription
options available on Office 365 that will make
it much easier for customers to adopt the service
and provide partners with much improved up-sell
opportunities.
The key changes see three new Office 365 Business plans
introduced, with features and price points tailored to
suit SMBs. The changes have been made in response
to customer and reseller feedback and are designed to
accelerate uptake of Office 365 and make it easier for
partners to sell.
Codie Gill: Changes to Office
365 plans will make it easier
to sell and upsell
The new Office 365 Business Essentials and Business
Premium plans replace the previous Small Business and
Small Business Premium options. There is also a new plan
called Office 365 Business that provides the core Office
applications small firms use every day. The number of users
that can be supported under these SMB plans has been
raised to 300 per plan.
Crucially, customers can now mix and match these plans
and Enterprise plans too, making it much easier and costeffective for them to add Office 365 to other standalone
plans, such as Exchange Online. The changes will make
Office 365 provides Open
platform for growth
S
ales of Office 365 have accelerated quickly over
the past six months and it has now been made
one of the main platforms on Microsoft Open
Licensing, which means that it can now be used as the
core Standard product for organisation-wide licensing
agreements.
This means that customers who want to adopt
Microsoft Office 365 can get all the benefits of Open
Licensing agreement. This makes life easier for them and easier for you – and in
response, we have brought our Annuity and Cloud teams together within Tech
Data to provide seamless support for you across the whole Open programme.
As you’ll have seen from our Meet the Team piece in the October edition, our people
are ready to support you on every aspect of Microsoft licensing. We are constantly
investing in training and development to ensure that they are well-equipped to
meet your needs – if you want to know more, please get in touch, we are here to

life easier for customers and for resellers, says Codie Gill,
Senior Office 365 Specialist at Tech Data.
‘The new mix and match options make Office 365 much
more attractive for many customers who did not want to
move up to the Enterprise plans and that will give resellers
the opportunity to revisit customers who fell into that
camp and delayed any decision to upgrade. The changes as
a whole will make it easier to persuade users to move from
Office 2010 or earlier editions, onto Office 365.’
Another important change is that you can now manage
all Business and Enterprise plans through the same admin
portal, with the same capabilities, which makes it much
easier to look after customers and administer their plans,
whatever options they have taken. Customers who are
already on an existing plan need to do nothing until
October 2015, when they will need to switch to one of the
new plans.
In the meantime, Tech Data’s specialist Microsoft team is
available to provide advice and assistance on all the changes,
so if you do have questions, please get in touch with the team
or Codie Gill directly – email [email protected] or

Adobe VIP promotions

here is no better time than the present to drive your
Acrobat sales. It’s Adobe’s year-end at the end of
November and right now you can register deals for just
10 seats on any combination of Acrobat sales and Creative

You can claim full rebates on all sales you register, so now
is the perfect time to register all our potential deals and
make sure you maximise your earnings. The message is
simple – the more customers you migrate from Transactional

Adobe also has a Price Lock promotion running, so this is
a great time to make customers aware that they will pay the
same next year as they are paying this year – which is a really

SMBs’ trust in Symantec underlined
by fast uptake of Backup Exec 2014
T
he high regard in which SMB customers hold
Symantec solutions has been clearly shown by the
strong sales we’ve seen of Backup Exec 2014. Since the
product was launched this autumn, Tech Data has seen a
very high level of upgrades and new licence and packaged
product sales, much of the latter being transacted via our
digital distribution system, TDActivate-here.
Matt Cook, Business Development Manager Software at
Tech Data, said that the fast uptake on Backup Exec 2014
is down to three main factors. ‘First and foremost it’s the
trust that partners undoubtedly have in Symantec and its
backup solutions. Second, it’s the excellent support that
they get from Symantec’s partner programme and third, the
rising awareness amongst SMBs that they really do need to
back up their data.’
Whilst sales have been brisk, there are still plenty of
opportunities, he noted. ‘We know that many thousands
of registered Symantec business customers are yet to make
the jump to 2014 and that’s a huge opportunity for the
channel. If you bought Backup Exec for your customers
from us via License Online in the past, we can tell you who
the customers that are yet to upgrade are and provide you
with all the details you need to build a renewal quotation.
It is well worth going into the system and checking. We’re
here to help on any opportunities of course and will always
be glad to do that.’

Tech Data cranks up activity to

E
veryone knows that printer vendors don’t make as much money selling print
hardware compared with that of the ink and toner cartridges, paper and other
supplies that are always needed to ensure printers, MFPs and scanners are
always available and productive.
Similarly, SMB resellers can make healthy profits on supplies – but it’s an area that
can all too easily be overlooked. We’re now having a renewed drive on supplies sales
and are investing in various activities and resources to ensure you can optimise your
opportunities.
We’ve appointed Andrew Copsey as Business Manager for Supplies and he is available
to help you maximise your potential. He brings great experience to the role, having
previously worked as a Supplies Sales Specialist for 18 months and over two years as
Assistant Category Manager within our Print and Supplies business unit.
Tech Data can offer you a full range of supplies solutions for your customers
from the leading Print and Supplies vendors – HP, Canon, Epson and Xerox.

Now you can offer Autodesk LT
via Electronic License Download
T
ech Data is working with Autodesk to make its
market-leading 2D drafting software, AutoCAD
LT, available via Electronic License Download. Now
AutoCAD LT Perpetual licences are available as Electronic
License Downloads as well as Physical Boxed Versions. In
addition AutoCAD LT is now available as a term based
licence (Desktop Subscription). These options combine to
make it simple for you to offer this extremely clever and
intuitive piece of software to your customers – and you
might be surprised at how many of them will be interested.
AutoCAD LT is the recognised leader in 2D drawing
and design software and now that it is available under
Autodesk’s Desktop Subscription licence, it is much more
affordable.
This means that, as well as professional architects and
designers, anyone who needs to create 2D drawings
or images on a regular basis can afford to make use of
the software. Garden designers, kitchen and bathroom
companies, interior decorators, shop-fitters, event
organisers, building firms, and many more kinds of
businesses, could make really good use of AutoCAD LT.
We see this as a big opportunity – and you can attach high
value sales of workstations, hi-res displays, graphics cards,
stands and large-format printers too, so the potential is
huge.

Kate McIntyre interviews Andy

Business. To hear the full
interview visit
www.tdnewsflash.co.uk
Enterprises today face new demands. In order to respond to individual customer and
market trends almost instantly, they need to harness the power of data and enable
a more dynamic workforce by providing secure access on more devices. IT suppliers
in turn are being compelled to take a more integrated approach, so that the benefits
of hybrid infrastructures can be realised whilst the organisation retains control over
management and security.
As the market-leading provider of server, storage, networking and software for
the enterprise, HP is playing a key role in the development of the new technologies
required to meet these changing needs. There are significant implications for its
partners too. Azlan is responding by bringing together all its HP Enterprise expertise
into one team at one location. It now has what is probably the biggest and most
highly-skilled team of people in HP converged infrastructure solutions in Europe. We
talked to Andy Dow, head of the Azlan HP Enterprise business for the UK and Ireland
about the reasoning behind the move and the benefits it will bring to HP’s valueadded reseller partners.

Azlan has recently brought all its HP teams together into a single integrated unit – we spoke
to Andy Dow, head of Azlan’s HP Enterprise division about the changes and what they mean
for HP partners
T
he recent decision to bring together all of Azlan’s HP Enterprise specialists into a
single integrated team is going to have a direct impact on all its HP VAR customers
– and according to Andy Dow, head of the HP Enterprise business, it will be a really
positive one.
‘It’s exciting because it means we have the largest dedicated HP Enterprise team in the UK,
and we are absolutely focused on supporting the HP reseller. The team has been handpicked, from experienced Tech Data staff who have been fully-trained on HP Enterprise
products, including Gen 9 servers, storage solutions such as 3PAR, and the whole
networking portfolio.’
Andy Dow: Depth of
specialism in HP Enterprise
The entire team is now based in Tech Data’s main UK offices in Basingstoke, with staff that
previously worked in Birmingham relocating. The field-based teams will remain in place
and the HP team will continue to have access to the offices and facilities in Warrington,
Heathrow and central London.
technologies sets Azlan’s
team apart
Support structure
A completely different structure, designed to maximise use of available resources is now
in place. This will allow Azlan to help more HP partners with more projects, as Andy
Dow explains. ‘We have a team of more than 50 people and we wanted to make sure we
had many different layers of technical expertise, that enable our partners to delve down to
different layers, depending on the kind of technical solution they require.
‘For example, if you need additional help with a solution, you will be able to speak to one
of our HP Enterprise overlay team, who will have more technical knowledge than your
account manager. If you need to go deeper you would talk to one of our pre-sales specialists,
who will help you to design and build up your solution and produce not only the quote but
also the technical configuration.
‘If the solution is even more complicated, you will be passed to the next tier of technical
expertise to our Solutions Architects. They are based in the field and today and every day,
they are out there working on-site with resellers, pre-sales, designing solutions around HP
servers, storage and networking.’

Azlan wants HP resellers to make use of this multi-layered expertise as soon as opportunities
begin to emerge. ‘It’s important that we help the reseller at the earliest point in the sales
cycle because that’s where, if there’s technically a mistake, it’s a long way to track back’ says
Dow.
‘By putting our Solutions Architects in the field at that early stage, we know that we are
helping the reseller to find the correct solution. We’re ensuring that however complicated
the storage, networking, racking, configuration we’ve got the expertise in-situ to deliver the
best solution. It will then go back to the pre-sales team, who will finalise the configuration
and from there the quoting process starts.’
‘There is a very clear, step-by-step path that looks at the solution you are working on and
passes you, hand-to-hand, to the depth you require. Or stops at the point where you’ve
received everything you need in order to go back to the end user.’

Finding the right level
This simple process will help Azlan to meet the needs of
more HP partners, says Dow, as it provides a defined path
to the level of expertise and support required. Applied
within the new team structure, it is much more dynamic
and flexible and provides comprehensive supports across
the full range of HP Enterprise technologies.
But this is only made possible by having all the experts – for
servers, storage, networking and software, working together
as a single, fully-integrated unit, says Dow. This was the
whole point of bringing the teams together – to enable this
new approach designed to meet the developing needs of HP
partners and their enterprise customers. ‘We have a big pool
of resources that we are able to draw on now. We are going
to use those skills and abilities to enhance the reseller’s own
capabilities and resources and help them make the most of
the value they already have within their business.’
Azlan’s level of HP skills is impressive. It has technical
people who are at the highest levels of technical
accreditation within HP server, storage, networking
software and services. The recent decision by HP to make
this area of the business a distinct entity in its own right
will only enhance the strong focus that HP has on these
solutions and technologies, so that has come at a good time
for Azlan.
Addressing complexity
Dow states: ‘To be working with an HP Enterprise Group
that is utterly focused on being the leader in data storage
and networking is the best place to be. We bring all of these
HP technologies together into one integrated solution –
being able to provide a strong networking platform, with
HP storage and racking and Gen8 or Gen9 servers, for
example. It’s a solutions focus that enhances the reseller’s
own technical resources. It provides them with people who
can look at the problem the end-user faces and help the
reseller build the best solutions for the customer’s needs,
using those HP building blocks.’
There is going to be much more focus on storage from
Azlan’s HP team as this will be the biggest area of market
growth over the next few years. The increased complexity of
storage solutions – necessary to deal with the massive rise in
data requirements – is going to make this area, potentially,
much more profitable.
Highly efficient networking and integration with the
servers and data centre will still be required as well, Dow
points out. ‘Every server is going to have more data storage
connected to it and more devices accessing it, so we are
going to see exponential growth around those areas. What

Focus On
•
n
it absolutely key here and where we are investing our
time and money, is in people with that knowledge and
understanding of the storage and networking, who can help
HP partners develop and deliver the right solutions.’
Dynamic and flexible
The new structure of the HP Enterprise team will enable
Azlan to meet the different levels of technical assistance that
resellers will need from time to time. With experts in HP
servers, storage, networking and software, working together
as an integrated unit, it provides support for the whole
spectrum of HP Enterprise technologies. That’s critical
and makes a real difference for HP partners in the current
market climate.
‘The whole enterprise data centre, infrastructure and
services area is becoming much more complex. If you are
heavily into it already, fantastic, but many resellers who
have been supplying servers with some storage are now
having to make a game-play shift and really get on top of
the complexities of the storage and the security that sits
behind. We think that many resellers are ready to make that
move and just need a helping hand – which hopefully we
can provide.’
Alongside the multi-faceted skills in HP Enterprise
solutions, Azlan has an extensive Professional Services
team that can provide additional expertise as required.
There is also a specialist unit that is focused on the needs
of managed services providers. They will also work closely
with the HP team when required.
What really sets Azlan’s newly integrated HP team apart for
partners though, says Dow, is the depth of its specialism
‘We are an enhancement to the reseller’s own resources –
from building the quote and checking the infrastructure
and configuration, to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with
our partners in front of the end-user to deliver complex
solutions. That is what the HP Enterprise Group within
Azlan and Tech Data is all about. The breadth and the
depth of our knowledge is, I think, unchallenged.’

Vendor Engagement Weekend

n
On Saturday 4th October Tech Data successfully
hosted the first Vendor Engagement Weekend
at Heythrop Park, Oxford.
Formerly known as ‘SME Training Weekends’ the newly renamed Vendor
Engagement Weekend is a step in the right direction to better reflect the content
and activities that take place over the course of the day.
‘I attended the Tech Data Vendor
Engagement Weekend at the
beginning of October and found it
to be extremely worthwhile not only
in meeting the individual vendors
and being kept up to date with
the latest technologies but also
in getting the chance to network
with like-minded companies and
also to meet the Tech Data team
themselves (plus it never hurts to
win £500 of holiday vouchers!)
Thanks to all at Tech Data for a
brilliant weekend.’
Gavin Young
T
oshiba kick-started proceedings with a presentation
in the spectacular auditorium at Heythrop Park
outlining what Toshiba’s SMB position was for
resellers and their current value proposition. There were
also Speaking Sessions from Microsoft Lumia Phones,
Veeam, Xerox and Microsoft Software, who rounded
off the morning presentations highlighting the business
benefits of Office 365.
The exhibition hall saw plenty of diversity and footfall
throughout the day hosting a total of 16 stands from
vendors including HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and Canon
providing demonstrations and displaying the latest
products and solutions available to the market.
The afternoon allowed for further personal
interaction between the delegates and
vendors as the in-depth training and Q&A
sessions took place, followed by the choice
of attending a ‘Quick Start Session to The
Art of the Deal’ from leading industry
voice CompTIA or a taster Public Sector
Workshop.

Aside from the training and development opportunities
throughout the day Tech Data also provided a 3 course
meal, evening entertainment, a complimentary overnight
stay and a chance to win a whole host of prizes. Gavin
Young became the fortunate winner of £500 holiday
vouchers and Nathan Cooper from 3C Technology Ltd
was the lucky winner of an iPad mini. Nathan explained,
‘I was really impressed at how organised and well set out
the whole day was. It was really beneficial to have talks from
the bigger vendors in the seminars; this made everyone
aware of big changes and new products coming to market.
Having Tech Data staff around made the day even better as
you could talk to them about any issues or problems you
were having. A very positive and helpful weekend overall,
looking forward to next year.’
‘It was an excellent day, and a pleasure to meet
so many customers and receive positive feedback.
Overwhelmingly our customers enjoyed the day
saying the mixture of workshops, auditorium and
interactive presentations were well organised,
informative, varied, and provided opportunities to
grow your business with Tech Data.’

Curved to perfection
The 34-inch LG curved, IPS display is a world first and, much more importantly,
a great piece of technology that customers will love and want to buy
T
he LG curved, IPS display is claimed to be the world’s
first 34-inch curved ultra-wide QHD display with a
21:9 aspect ratio and, as we know of no other display
that fits that description, that’s a reasonable assertion. But
that’s of no real importance to the customer (and therefore
to you) at the end of the day. What they want to know is
what use is it to them? The great news here is that the LG
34UC97 display – to give its formal name – is an excellent
and practical piece of technology that can be put to highly
productive use in many different scenarios.
Let’s make this clear; it is definitely a product you can sell
– whether your customers are involved in professional AV,
graphics, design or video, work in corporate organisations,
or small businesses or knowledge workers that need to be as
precise and productive as they can be every single minute
they are at their desktop.
Carefully crafted
What sets this LG display apart – aside from its ‘world’sfirst’ status and its curved shape, is its superb, lifelike
colour and that 21:9 aspect ratio. This is the ratio used for
widescreen movies which means that users don’t get the
black bars at the top of the screen.
The carefully crafted curve of the LG IPS is very significant.
Curved displays are still quite new (and thus still carry a
premium) and most products to come out of the R&D labs
so far have been TVs. Home entertainment was the first
target but the really big market is going to be business.
With the Quad HD resolution of 3440 x 1440 (that’s 2.4
times HD), the gentle but generous 178° viewing angle of
the display, and the 21:9 aspect ratio, users can see with
clarity right to the edge of the screen. This means there is
no image or colour distortion – which is a big deal if you
work with colour. It means that, on this display, you get no
inconsistency and variation. The colour is precise right to
the edge of the display. And with the ultra-high-resolution,
the detail is incredible. High resolution images can be
viewed without scrolling.
Hugely impressive
We can assure you that once you (or your customer) have
seen and used the LG display for a few minutes – perhaps
less – you will be convinced. In an ideal world, everyone
who works on the desktop would probably want to have
one of these displays – but it is going to take up more room
of course, and it’s not as private as a smaller display or a
laptop screen, so there will be exceptions.
The prime targets are going to be super-users of graphics
and video but everyday ultra-busy users on ultra-big
projects and ultra-big files will love it too. LG has thought
about their needs as well. It has included a four-screen split
capability, so you can divide the screen into four sections at
different screen ratios. You can also use two input devices –
a laptop and a smartphone for example – and display each
on the screen at the same time. It will work with
PCs or Macs.
You really have to see the LG IPS 34UC97 to understand
just how good it is. It is a hugely impressive display and
one that we highly recommend you see for yourself and
get in front of your customers as soon as possible.

Google Chrome
n
With more Chromebooks and Chrome desktop devices being brought to market and sales really taking off in the
US, there is rising interest in this pure cloud-based approach to managing apps and data. We spoke to Tech Data’s
dedicated Google team about how the market is shaping up.
G
oogle Chrome and Chromebooks have been seen
as something of a niche consumer product up to
now. But market forecasts indicate that they could
become much more significant. Gartner has forecast that
Chromebook sales will almost triple to 14.2 million units
worldwide by 2017. It expects global sales of 5.2 million
this year, an increase of 79% year-on-year.
Beresford says: ‘Demand for Chrome is growing and our
role is to provide partners with the expertise on everything
Chrome. In addition to the hardware, we can also offer a
wide range of installation and professional services to those
resellers that do not have their own.’
In 2013, more than four out of five (82%) of Chromebooks
were sold in North America, but now Chrome is ready
to shine in other regions it seems. Growing confidence in
the cloud and a flurry of great new product releases such
as the LG Chromebase (see First Look on page 40), have
seen interest mushrooming in all sectors of the market, and
especially in education and the public sector.
In addition to the LG Chromebase and other devices from
the likes of HP, Acer, ASUS and Toshiba, Tech Data is
also offering some specific Chrome products, including
Chromebox for Meetings and the Chrome Management
Console (CMC). The former is designed to provide
high quality, affordable video-conferencing and it’s really
impressive, says Beresford. ‘It’s open, works across the web
and it is extremely cost-effective, with an RRP of around
£1,000. While it’s not necessarily going to replace the VC
system in the board room, it’s ideal for all those meeting
rooms around the building, or for a smaller business’.
Tech Data has responded to the growing interest by setting
up its own Google team, formed of Business Managers
Matt Beresford and Paul Nicholas both of whom have
many years experience working in the PC systems and
networking divisions, and Google Product Specialist, Tom
Baker. They are there to help resellers understand Chrome
and to develop new opportunities right across the Chrome
environment – i.e. with specific Google offerings as well as
the Chromebooks and desktop being marketed by brandname vendors.
Open and cost-effective
The CMC solution is an easy to use admin console that
enables multiple Chrome devices to be managed across an
organisation. It’s easy to see how desirable having that level
of control would be, in a school for example, and indeed, it
is education that has been driving Chromebook sales in the
US. That pattern could well be repeated here, says Beresford.

Kate McIntyre interviews Paul Nicholas, Google Business Manager, Tech Data.

‘For schools, Chromebooks are very appealing because they
are very inexpensive. They are thin and light and there are no
moving parts so they are easy and low cost to maintain and
you can make incredible savings in power as well. The data is
pretty much all in the cloud and that makes it a much more
collaborative way of working and even if one gets mislaid
or stolen, no data is lost. Security and software updates are
all taken care of on Chrome, so there is no need for separate
anti-virus software. With the Chrome Management Console
they can control the apps that kids can access and apply
policies to groups of users, so they get a high level of control
- and it is amazingly simple and easy to use.’
That’s the whole point about Chrome really. In the end,
customers will choose what platform they want to use and
as more of them take a genuine interest in exploring the
Chrome option, the channel will need to be ready to offer
them that choice.
Widening interest
But it is not just education that is looking at Chrome
seriously. Interest is being shown right across the public
and commercial sectors and vendors are now starting
to put more resources into Chrome devices. Tech Data,
in addition to forming its team, is creating a dedicated
microsite for Chrome solutions. It’s getting plenty of
support from Google too, says Beresford. ‘Google are
very committed to the channel and they are working with
us to reach out to more resellers, so they are ready when
customers come to them and ask them about Chrome.’

Peter Hubbard, Managing Director UK & Ireland, Tech Data Mobile says that the
new family of Microsoft® Lumia devices presents a really special opportunity for IT
resellers and mobile dealers
Meeting the desire to do more
The explosion of mobile devices is there for everyone to
see – and it’s a colossal opportunity for the IT reseller. You
only have to look around you to see it happening. Just about
everyone is carrying a smartphone today and many users also
take their tablet or hybrid laptop with them, wherever they
go. Users can do more and they want to do more.
Peter Hubbard: Pushing
potential opportunity in the
B2B sector
This is a trend that’s engulfing business users as much as
consumers and presents a massive growth opportunity for
B2B resellers – to deliver the devices and services customers
want and to enable businesses to integrate mobile devices into
their own systems and working practices.
Freedom and security – finding
the right balance
For business customers, the explosion of mobile devices is
already presenting significant challenges. Users expect to have
the same immediate, anytime access to apps and information
at work as they have in their personal lives.
New capabilities are being offered and deployed on mobile
devices all the time, updates are available almost by the
minute – and it’s essential that they are accepted and
implemented right away. Users know from their own personal
experience that they need to keep up to date. But they will see
any IT department or corporation that does not allow them to
work freely while they are on the move as being unnecessarily
restrictive.
Many will want to use the latest and greatest mobile devices –
and the newer, the more unique and the more personal those
devices are the better. Others may not be as fussy, but they
will still want devices they can use immediately and effectively.
The IT department meanwhile is striving to ensure everything
that’s connected to the network is secure and manageable.
They need to balance the expectations and demands of users
against the regulatory and security needs of the organisation.
Everyone in business is aware of the need to keep information
and systems locked-down. But what if a laptop or mobile
is simply left, unintentionally, on a train or in a coffee bar,
unlocked and open to exploitation? Users are busy and they
don’t always fully understand the level of risk to which such a
loss would expose their organisation.
Simply dealing with the explosion of the number of devices
in use is a major headache for the IT department. While
many have moved away from embracing BYOD and
implemented CYOD policies to regain some degree of
control, they still face the challenge of coping with many
different environments, versions and updates, and ensuring
compliance and compatibility between them. Having one
operating system that is consistent across all devices makes it
much easier to manage the rapid expansion and use of mobile
devices.
Inevitably, meeting these differing requirements means
making some kind of trade-off between providing the
performance, functionality, ease of use and features that
users demand, and the control and mitigation of risk the
organisation insists upon.
Microsoft® and Lumia – from a
customer perspective
For business users, the idea of being able to use mobile devices
that are powerful, flexible, and stylish, and also meet the
security, support and technical needs of the business is very
attractive.
This is what Microsoft® has built with Microsoft® Lumia.
There is something for everyone in the Microsoft® Lumia
family – premium devices for those who need a larger display,
smartphones for users who need optimum mobility and
phablets for those who need something in between. They are
beautifully designed and crafted, so users will be happy to be
seen using a Microsoft® Lumia anywhere.
Microsoft® Lumia is built for business. It runs all Microsoft®
Office apps, including Lync for corporate-class instant

messaging and collaboration, and a Company Hub that
provides a focal point for the line of business apps. With
Windows providing a consistent platform for all devices and
systems, synching and sharing messages, schedules and data is
simple. This is a big advantage for organisations as it means all
users get the same experience. They will all implement policies
and updates in the same way. If
problems or issues arise, they will
be the same for everyone and
easier to address and resolve.
While Microsoft® Lumia devices
are powerful, they are not costly,
so instead of being compelled
to purchase expensive devices
for everyone, businesses can
offer users a choice of affordable
options that look great and get the job done.
Microsoft® Lumia devices are manageable and secure too –
they enable businesses to meet the expectations and standards
of their own organisation and industry regulators, without
losing any flexibility. They come with features that enable
mobile device management and remote policy enforcement,
so IT administrators can stay in full control. Microsoft®
Lumia also supports mobile VPNs for secure connectivity
from anywhere. Hardware-accelerated device encryption
and remote lock and wipe features mean that data stored on
Microsoft® Lumia devices is always safeguarded.
With Microsoft® Lumia, all users have access to the proven
flexibility and broad functionality of Microsoft Office.
The IT administrator meanwhile, has a known and trusted
environment in which they can manage users efficiently and
control access effectively, without the time-consuming and
expensive need for cross-platform integration.
Microsoft® Lumia devices are also cloud-ready, so if the
customer has already migrated to Office 365 – or is planning
to do so in the near future, Microsoft® Lumia is the perfect
platform to take advantage of all the benefits of a more flexible
and dynamic way of working. Other standard features, such
as wireless charging and built-in cameras, make Microsoft®
Lumia devices flexible and easy to manage for all users.
How does Lumia benefit you?
The reseller’s perspective
For the B2B IT reseller, Microsoft® Lumia makes as much
sense as it does for the customer. As it’s a Windows platform,
it fits perfectly with your customers’ existing systems and
enables you to both meet their needs and provide continuity
of service. Rather than having to develop skills in a new
platform, sales and technical staff can build on their existing
capabilities and experience.
There is no need to integrate different environments – with
all the complexities and support issues that will inevitably
arise as a result. The styling and power of Microsoft® Lumia
devices make them much more desirable than your standard
grey business phone from a user’s perspective, whilst their
affordability and extensive management and security features

make it much easier – both for customer and for you – to
make the investment case.
A single operating environment also means that there is only
one supplier to whom resellers need turn for information
and support – and a wealth of existing knowledge within
the channel that you are able to draw upon when you need
it. Additional training is readily available from Microsoft®
accredited professional partners as well.
Customers will already be familiar and comfortable with
the platform and applications, so they will find it easier
to adapt and require less reassurance and support. This
makes it easier for them to justify investment and minimise
risk. This, along with Microsoft’s strong reputation and
credibility in the business market, makes Microsoft® Lumia
easier to sell.
Microsoft® is already a trusted and established channelfocused partner, so resellers will be able to make use of
their existing relationships with Tech Data and other expert
partners and take advantage of their existing Microsoft®
accreditation status, and all the promotions, incentives and
other benefits of the Microsoft® Partner Programme.
A unique opportunity that
simply makes sense
Microsoft® Lumia presents business customers and resellers
with a new and unique opportunity.
For the former, it offers swift and seamless integration with
existing systems and a range of options that give users the
mobility, flexibility and functionality they desire. For the
IT department it offers good management and control
capabilities over all users and devices and easy, secure
connectivity and data protection.
Microsoft® Lumia presents resellers with the opportunity
to offer the full advantages of mobility and the cloud to
customers, seamless integration with existing systems and
unbeatable investment protection in desirable hardware for
the right price.
For everyone striving to take advantage of the latest mobile
device innovations and cloud services, Lumia simply makes
sense.

An ideal base for Chrome
on the desktop
The LG Chromebase is
simple and effective –
and the perfect choice
for schools and other
organisations looking
to take the Google
route
G
oogle Chrome is now seen as a viable choice for any
operation that needs to keep its budgets tight. While
not everyone is ready to put everything into the cloud,
for many organisations in education, local government and
some commercial sectors, it’s already the platform of choice.
Chromebooks tend to have had a higher profile up to now but
desktops are also appearing and one of the most impressive
yet to emerge is the LG Chromebase. It is very easy to see
the natural appeal of this simple, accessible and affordable
device will undoubtedly have to public sector and commercial
organisations that want to go down the Chrome route.
It’s particularly easy to see how schools and other public
access services, such as libraries will love the Chromebase.
Retailers will also see the potential instantly. What you have
here is a desktop device Internet access terminal that comes
with none of the headaches of managing fully-functioning
laptops and pretty much none of the costs. No installed
software to update, no need to manage security, no hard disk
to be protected physically and no data residing within the
machine that could be subsequently accessed if the device is
stolen or lost – left in a bar or on a train.
Broad appeal
When you start to put it like that, you can see the broader
appeal of Chrome as a platform. It also boots up in
seconds and there are no moving parts in these devices, so
maintenance is easy and failure rates as good as zero. Of
course, what it does mean is that all the apps, data, storage –
everything – are in the cloud.
But let’s get back to the specifics of the LG Chromebase. For
starters, it looks fantastic and much more expensive than it
really is; it looks as good as any all-in-one you’ll find on the
market. It has all the power it needs inside – and if the spec’
looks light at first reading, remember all it has to do is access
the web and load and run apps.
The display is obviously going to be really important on such
a device and the Chromebase’s crisp, 21.5-inch 1080p display
does not disappoint. The keyboard and mouse are simple
and elegantly designed and well suited to use with Chrome.
Good connectivity is vital too and again there is no issue here.
The unit has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and an
Ethernet port. One spare USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port
on the side, plus an HDMI-in for external devices complete
the connectivity. There is a built-in webcam and rear-facing
speakers.
Boot-up in seconds
At the heart of all this is a 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor
and 2GB of DDR3L memory, backed up by 16GB of
SSD. You don’t need a whole lot of RAM as the operating
system does not need much space in which to run. This
set-up should enable users to have eight or nine contentheavy sites open simultaneously before there is any impact
on performance. Out in the cloud, there is no shortage of
space; each Chromebase comes with 100GB of Google Drive
storage, for two years, free – which makes it even better value
of course.
Like any Chrome device, it boots up in moments, which
makes it really great for schools or public use. That said, noone likes waiting for the system to boot up when they are in a
hurry to get online or to their data. This is the big advantage
of having such a simple architecture and low memory
overhead.
The LG Chromebase is not a difficult system to review. It’s
really simple and does exactly what it’s supposed to. For
schools and any organisation looking to use Chrome and
Google Docs and don’t want the devices to be portable for
whatever reason, it’s just perfect. It is well worth drawing to
the attention of any customer that’s considering the Chrome
option.

Introducing the new Office 36
Microsoft® are offering three new plans for SMB customers
Why this is great for your customers
New Choice
The Office 365 Business plan (£7.00/user/month)
makes it simple to get just the familiar, full Office apps
at a great price – always up to date and available on
all devices including PC, Mac, iPad and smartphone.
The included 1TB of cloud storage makes it easy to
access and edit important files from anywhere.
New Value
Business Premium includes Midsize Business’ services
at the Small Business Premium price of £7.80/user
month. Business Essentials matches Small Business on
price (£3.10/user/month) with improved features and
additional services like Yammer and Active Directory
support. The higher seat limit of 300 means even
more businesses can take advantage of the great
value these plans provide.
New Flexibility
As businesses grow and their technology needs
change, customers can move their company (or
just specific users) to an Enterprise plan, a different
Business plan, or even add solutions like Project,
Visio, Dynamics CRM Online and more.

e 365 plans
Why this is great for you
Core Office apps for SMB
The Office desktop applications have been
a key revenue generating product for our
SMB partner channel over the past few
decades. You can now more easily lead with
Office when pitching a customer on moving
to the cloud.
Simplified sales process
The new plan layout will be simpler for you
to sell and for customers to understand. The
new Business plans all have one consistent
seat cap of 300 and customers can now
choose to purchase any Office 365 plan,
regardless of the specific trial they signed
up for. This shortens sales cycles, as you

don’t need to qualify a customer into a plan
before moving to the trial stage.
Greater value for SMB plans
Office 365 Business Essentials and Business
Premium (which replace Small Business and
Small Business Premium) increases the user
limit from 25 to 300 users. This means that
these plans can be sold to a larger set of
customers at their affordable price points.
New on-ramps for SMBs
Many customers prefer to get started with a
single service in the cloud (e.g. email, cloud
storage). Office 365 offers many standalone
plans for this purpose, including the new
Office 365 Business, Exchange Online plan
1 and OneDrive for Business. Customers
are now able to start with these plans and
move to Business Essentials and Business
Premium. Previously, customers were only
able to move to Enterprise plans.
Improved upsell opportunities
Previous limitations in movement between
Small Business, Midsize Business and
Enterprise plans restricted your ability to
increase revenue through an upsell motion.
Customers can now move fluidly between
Business and Enterprise plans and add
additional services like PowerBI, Project,
Visio, Dynamics CRM, Azure RMS and more
as they require.

Helping solution providers

The Changing Face of Distribution:
A view from CompTIA
Vaughan Shayler, Director of Channel Strategies for CompTIA, explains how resellers
and solution providers can benefit from changes that have occurred in a more mature
distribution market.
A
Vaughan Shayler:
CompTIA understands
what solution providers
need to run their business
and make it better
s technology evolves, so does the market. When it
comes to distribution, for example, the things that
businesses use to differentiate themselves on – range,
availability and logistics – are all a given. With a more mature
market, successful distributors are now able to position their
business in terms of the added value they can deliver to their
resellers and solution providers, along with the strength of the
relationships they can establish.
Another factor that has come into play is the increasingly
savvy nature of the end user customer. More and more, they
are carrying out their own research online and engaging with
their IT supplier at a more advanced stage than previously
in the sales cycle. When they do so, they have a much clearer
idea of what they want and have often created a shortlist of
the products and services they’ve identified. As a result, they
are less influenced by price and more interested in how their
investment in IT will grow and improve their own business.
It’s therefore not surprising they’re looking to work with
suppliers that share that same ethos.
Distributors have already made changes to both their business
models and offers to reflect the market evolution. Resellers
and solution providers can now deliver exactly what end
users are demanding by partnering with those distributors
that offer the more rounded and complete solutions the end
market is looking for. Solution providers can benefit from
the more intelligent, customer-focused and comprehensive
support now available from distributors. Not only can a
distributor partner become an aggregator of technology, it
can also provide the solution provider with all the relevant
support, training and accessories that go along with it.
CompTIA understands what solution providers need to run
their business and make it better. We have the ability to help
develop more intelligence on market trends, best practice

and peer-to-peer learning. Accessing such intelligence enables
solution providers to become more informed when it comes
to their own end users. It can help them stay one step ahead
of their customers on the technology curve. This helps to
cement their own supplier-customer relationship based on
added value by maximising the benefits of new technologies
for their clients. And of course, maximising their own
profitability to boot.
Here at CompTIA we have made our extensive resource
library and industry insight reports accessible online at no
cost to non-members, along with our own webinars and
events, through the Registered User scheme. We also offer
Trustmark accreditation, which enables resellers and solution
providers to differentiate their services more effectively
through best practice certification.
If resellers and solution providers can recognise and adapt to
the changing market, the benefits are significant and can be
summarised as more customers, more business, more profit.
Distributors have added greater value to their own offers and
the successful resellers and solution providers tomorrow will
be those who partner with distributors that still deliver not
just the latest technology, but also the more comprehensive
package of support, that end users are demanding.
