The Sunday Connection… Fear of the Lord leads one to be happy and generous. It is a key point in Jesus’ parable about the talents. The third servant who received one talent fears his master in a way that makes him anxious and fearful. He buries his talent and squanders his time and the potential of the gifts given to him. Why is this servant’s behavior so different from that of the heroic woman in Proverbs? How did this servant come to be so much turned in on himself that he cannot use the gifts he has been given but rather clings to them? The master is demanding and ready to call this servant to account. The heroic woman is portrayed as one completely at home with her creative tasks. This third servant evades the responsibility of being creative with his resources. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom when a person recognizes her or his deeply rooted dependence on the Lord. Such a person recognizes not only that everything has come from the Lord and will return to him but also that the Lord is ready to accompany one in using these gifts. The happiness, good energy, and generosity of the heroic woman speaks volumes of the richness that resides in her heart. She sees the potential for good in people and things rather than being overwhelmed by their vulnerability. The first two servants used their gifts with confidence and seem to almost effortlessly generate profits. They do not waste time agonizing over how to use or protect their gifts. They go forward and interact with the world. They seem to have found a way to allow the Lord to be a serious player in their lives and not to be constricted through fear or failure. A certain amount of anxiety over the accounting we must give may help us to be more responsible when things are not going well for us. What is most important in using our time and talents, however, is that we know that the Lord is there with us, assisting us through life’s disappointments as well as joys. The heroic woman confidently testified to the goodness of life and to the watchful care of the Creator. She lived generously and thus generated vitality and generosity in those around her. Let us pray for one another that we might be a blessing to those around us and run with overflowing love toward the goal of our heavenly home. Baptisms We welcome newly baptized Chloe Schelioni Johnson to our family of faith. November is Remember Our Veterans Month “One of the most vexing problems (today) in American society is the outstanding number of veterans that are jobless and/or homeless many times due to the disability they sustained while serving (our) country.” During the month of November our parish will sponsor a collection to aid our brave women and men who have served our nation in the armed forces. The parish Respect Life team is working in conjunction with the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter 120. The following items have been requested by the DAV chapter. They may be brought to church and placed in the DAV display space on the sanctuary step: Toiletries for men and women (including toilet paper); Winter clothing for men and women – hats, scarves, socks, boots, gloves, sweaters & jackets – new or gently used; Blankets, pots, pans, utensils, dishes, crock pots, toasters; Tops gift cards or Burger King gift cards All items will be distributed by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 120 to veterans in need who are vetted by the DAV. God bless our veterans! And may God bless you for your charity! Bishop Malone, in a recent letter to the parishes of the diocese wrote: “I know that you share my concern for the many Catholics who can be touched so profoundly by this effort. I am convinced that now is the time to start using a combination of television ads, social media messages, and personal invitations to re-energize our people and reach out to the inactive Catholics all around us.” Bishop Malone has requested the launch of a special campaign to support the “Catholics Come Home” program. He writes: “The impact of any media campaign is dependent upon the amount of purchasing power we have to leverage our viewing market. That is part of my reason for appealing for your support at this time. More importantly, you know that even the best conceived and most beautiful media campaign can only bring folks to our doors. It is the warmth of our welcome that will insure their decision to stay.” Ladies of Charity Communion for Those with Gluten Sensitivity The parish now has gluten-free hosts for those who have an allergy or sensitivity to gluten.
