CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice (Mass) and the Sacraments. The
Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. “The marriage covenant, by which a man and
a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own
special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation
and education of children. Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament.”
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1660)
Jesus brought to full awareness the divine plan for marriage. In John’s Gospel, Christ’s first miracle occurs at the wedding in
Cana. “The Church attaches great importance to Jesus’ presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the
goodness of marriage and proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence.” (Catechism
of the Catholic Church, no. 1663).
Jesus unequivocally taught the indissolubility of marriage. “What God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
(Matthew 19:6) Thus, it is a wonderful privilege to welcome Bishop Jeffrey Monforton to our Saturday evening Mass today at
St. Lawrence O’Toole Church to recognize twenty one (21) couples from our Catholic Community who have been married
for 25, 30, 35, 40 ... 60+ years:
Richard & Lisa Saxby III (SL), November 25, 1989 (25)
Paul & Pamela Walker (SJ), June 3, 1989 (25)
John & Judy Baker (SJ), March 24, 1984 (30)
Michael & Mary “Jackie” Murnahan (SJ), November 3, 1979 (35)
William & Arlene Basedow (SL), August 4, 1979 (35)
Bruce & Lisa Davis (SJ), July 14, 1979 (35)
Timothy & Rae Ann Mains (SL), April 4, 28, 1979 (35)
Robert & Ann Nelson (SJ), August 3, 1974 (40)
Frederick & Claudia Bihl (SM), November 29, 1969 (45)
Michael & Susan Morgan (SJ), November 8, 1969 (45)
Joseph & Mary Medinger (SJ), September 13, 1969 (45)
Stephen & Linda Holt (SJ), August 30, 1969 (45)
Donald & O’Dessia Kline (SM), June 21, 1969 (45)
Michael & Mary “Mikie” Haney (SL), April 26, 1969 (45)
Bruce & Susan Brown (SL), August 22, 1964 (50)
Gary & Laura Willis (SJ), July 18, 1964 (50)
James & Lavetta Sites (SJ), January 4, 1964 (50)
Victor “Fred” & Janice Newman (SJ), June 13, 1959 (55)
James & Mary Laber (SJ), August 21, 1954 (60)
James & Margaret Gallagher (SJ), June 21, 1954 (60)
Glenn “Bob” & Freda Rose Holmes (SJ), May 22, 1954 (60)
We congratulate these twenty one couples who have continued to “live out” the grace of the Holy Sacrament of Marriage. Also,
I believe it is important to remember all of our widows and widowers who continue to actively practice their Catholic
Faith without the human presence of their spouse. Our Catholic Community continues to enjoy the strength of these who have
been benefited by the grace of the Holy Sacrament of Marriage.
God bless all married couples and all those preparing for marriage.
CONDOLENCES: SISTER PAULETTE BOLL,
88, Dominican Sister of St. Mary of the Springs,
Columbus, Ohio, died Saturday, November 8.
Her Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in
Columbus last Thursday, November 13. Sister
Paulette is a sister of our parishioners, Bernadette
(Mike) Kinney and Margaret Schwab; she is also a sister-in-law
of Ruby Boll of St. Mary Church, Pine Grove, now living in North
Carolina. May Sr. Paulette now rest in the eternal embrace of
our Risen Lord.
BRENT MICHAEL SIERER and
VANESSA LINAE MATHIEU,
both of our Ironton Catholic
Community, are planning their
marriage for Saturday, December 13 (12-13-14), St. Lawrence
O’Toole Church, 2:30 p.m. Let us pray for them as they made
their final preparations for their life-long commitment.
FYI: For more information on the Child
Protection & Safe Environment policies of
our diocese, go to the web site for the Diocese
of Steubenville www.diosteub.org and click on
the “Child Protection” tab.
WELL DESERVED: Next Saturday,
November 22, thirteen (13) men from our
local K of C Council # 1408 will receive
their 4th Degree at a 1:00 p.m. ceremony
at our local Council Hall, 2103 S. 3rd Street.
About fifteen other men from around the
state of Ohio will also receive their 4th
Degree in this Exemplification ceremony.
This upcoming 4th Degree Exemplification is the first one in
Ironton since 1914 and, now one hundred years later, this
2014 4th Degree Exemplification is named in honor of our
parishioner. Jim Colegrove.
This is a well deserved honor for Jim as he has been a 4th
degree Knight for 33 years and has held all offices in our local
council. He has also been K of C District Deputy for 14 years
and for two years was on the staff of State Deputy, Larry
Moegling. Jim has been married to his wife, Rhonda, for 36
years and they have two sons, James “Jay” and Andy.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: A bad attitude is like a flat tire; you
have to change it if you’re going to go anywhere. (An attitude
of service turns a servant into a saint!)
