YEAR 4S AMAZING CAMP KOJAREWON
DAY 1: We started at school. Our departure was at 9:00am. We played eye-spy on the way to the Pioneer Village. We started at once making damper.
After we made it we went to the puppet show. Halfway through the puppet show we saw a horse. The puppets were homemade and painted. Each
puppet had its own purpose for the puppet show. Once the puppet show was completed we got to eat the damper and it was the most amazing damper we had eaten. After we ate damper we went to see an old building where people used to live. Once we had a tour of the building we went to the old
ambulance building and badges and history. Afterwards we looked at the old washing machines and ironing. Then we went to the old fire station
which was the end of our tour of the Pioneer Village, so we went to the camp and met everyone and found where we were sleeping. Then we had
lunch which was chicken burgers. After that we got into our groups and learnt the camp motto ‘K.F.C’,. which stands for ‘Kindness, fun and cooperation.” So we got into the camp activities. Halfway through the activities we had to go inside because of rain. Once the rain stopped we had free time
and some of us explored the bush. When free time was over we got to have dinner. Following after that was spotlight and the talent show. The talent
show was the last thing of the night.
DAY2: We went for an early morning run before breakfast. After breakfast we had a scavenger hunt which spread across the bush which rounded
off our activities apart from the last minute water fight then we hopped on the bus and went home.

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, Caregivers and Friends,
“Mr Gall (our OHS officer) would be so proud of us!” This is the text on my phone that welcomed me when I woke this morning. It seems that our Year 6 and 7 students led the way in a late night fire drill at their camp, evacuating efficiently when the
alarm went off and even holding torches for other guests to find their way safely down the stairs. Well, I should clarify that the
girls did an amazing job. The boys were a little harder to rouse. (As a mother I am tempted to say that that may be typical male
behaviour, but I will forego that inclination!) According to Miss Prentice, everyone is having a fabulous time on camp. I know
she certainly did as I had to have stern words to her about returning to school today.
On a less light hearted note, one of our school families is doing it pretty tough at the moment. The Densley family lost their
house to fire yesterday morning. On behalf of the school community we have provided them with a care package, and they
have already had a wonderful response of assistance from friends and neighbours. Luckily they have a furnished house available to them. However, we thought as a caring community we would endeavour to stock their pantry for them to support them
through this initial phase of recovery. Please drop any grocery or cleaning items to the office tomorrow so these can be delivered to make a brighter weekend for them. Financial donations are also welcome, and these will be put towards vouchers
from local businesses.
Booklists were sent home last week. Older classes will notice an absence of spelling textbooks. This does not mean that
spelling will be less of a focus, but teachers will be creating programs with words, strategies and activities that are more closely aligned to what the students are exploring each term and are therefore more relevant to them. Year 3 to 7 will also note the
inclusion of a Bible. The Bible is a central resource for our new Religious Education curriculum. The selected Bible is presented
in a very attractive style with interesting illustrations and explanations, and will be a useful acquisition, not just for the rest of
the time students are here at St Monica’s, but throughout their life.
Also new next year will be a soft, embroidered hat that the P&F are sourcing. These hats hold their shape well, even after being scrunched into school bags or thrown into the washing machine. The expected cost will be approximately $27.50 and will
be available from the school from early next year. If you wish to order one of these hats for your child for 2015, please fill in
the order form in this newsletter and return to the office so that adequate numbers and sizes can be obtained. Note that the
other green hats are still able to be purchased and worn as before.
Speaking of hats, it has been quite annoying to see so many hats lying around the school environs at the end of each day, and
the number of students coming in to the office to borrow hats throughout the school day. In an effort to encourage all students to take greater care of their belongings, hats will be collected each afternoon and only returned to students at
lunchtime so that they will miss out on play during the morning tea break. No hats will be lent out next week to underscore
the message.
Now, on a much happier note, on behalf of the St Monica’s School community I would like to welcome baby Grace, a new sister for Ava and Hannah from Prep CT. May she bring bundles of blessings for Mum Amanda, Dad Mitchell and her beautiful big
sisters.
Until next week, remember you are too blessed to be stressed!

Remembrance Day Liturgy
Thanks to the Grade 5’s for running the liturgy to commemorate our fallen soldiers. It was a prayerful service with significant meaning. Well done guys!
Christmas Hampers
Please keep the goods coming! We’d love to have overflowing hampers to donate to those less fortunate.
Last Family Mass for the year - 29th November
The prep classes are leading us in Mass to celebrate the first Sunday of Advent on the 29 th of November at
6.00pm. This is also our end of year break up celebration with the parish, so there will be a sausage sizzle
after Mass. It would be lovely to see everyone there.
Year 4 Liturgy Reflection
We had a spectacular time on camp. One of my favourite parts was during our class liturgy. The students
had to go up to someone in their class and give them a blessing. We heard some truly beautiful words from
members of the class to each other. Things like, “Thanks for always looking out for me” and “You’re a really great mate”. It was also amazing to see absolutely everyone receive and give a blessing without a moment’s hesitation. What great kids we get to teach here at St Monica’s!
To close, a little food for positive thought. Some days it can be easier to see all the terrible
things in life, but if we only see these things, think of all those great views we’re missing!
Miss Nicarla Prentice Acting APRE
Prep CT:
This week in Prep we have been learning more about Advent and Christmas. Students used puppets to retell the story of
Christmas. During Science lessons we had a look at a variety of toys and how they move. In Maths lessons we have been looking at patterns and finding the missing parts of the pattern. This week was our last library lesson for the year. Thanks Mrs Tindall for sharing so many wonderful books with us. If you have not brought in your costume for the Musical can you please do
this as soon as possible? Don’t forget special lunch orders.
Have a great week,
Mrs Charmaine Tancred

Prep EJ:
In Geography students have been using their five senses to describe the features of their special place. In Art the Preppies are
exploring and experimenting with self-portraits. They look great! They will use these portraits during English next week to
write about themselves. Please keep the 26th of November free as Prep EJ and Prep CT will be hosting the family Mass. It
would be fantastic to see everyone there! Thank you for sending in the pirate costumes for the musical. Keep the donations
for St Vinnies coming!
Miss Ellen Jacklin
Year 1:
The children enjoyed the Fire Safety Visit earlier this week. They passed their test and as a reward got to go outside and
play/sit in the Fire Engine. Special thanks must go to Fireman Paul and Fireman Nathan for their enjoyable lesson in Fire Safety.
Year One are looking forward to their excursion to the Cobb and Co Museum next Wednesday 19th November 2014. Please
remember to complete and return your permission form along with your payment if you have not already done so.
Mrs Liliana Eckhardt
Year 2:
This week in Year Two we finally finished our animal information reports. Some of the children have already taken a copy
home to share with their families. The reports and diorama will be shared with the school and will go home with your children either today or on Friday. The children thoroughly enjoyed this task and they put in a lot of effort. I’m very proud of
them.
You may have noticed that the children have been receiving times tables practice as part of their homework. We are also focusing on this in class to better prepare the children for Year 3. Hopefully this will give the students a head start for next year
so keep practising wherever and whenever you can!
Just a reminder that tomorrow we have a birthday for someone very special in Year Two. I wonder who it could be…
Enjoy your week!
Miss Lauren Devlin
Year 3:
This week the Year Three children have been continuing the study of different forms of poetry and the different types of devices poets use. The children have shown plenty of creativity during the study of this genre. If you notice the children walking
around the house saluting, it’s not necessarily the case that they are preparing for a life in the military. The children are sailors in the Musical and they are getting into character! On that note, if you have not brought in your costume for the Musical
can you please do this as soon as possible? Don’t forget special lunch orders.
Stay happy!
Mrs Annie Murphy
Year 4
Look forward to some special news when I am back from camp next week!
Mr Dylan Philp

Year 5
The year 5’s led a beautiful and moving Remembrance Day liturgy on Tuesday. Josie read from Ecclesiastes 3 – ‘A Time for
Everything’. This reading describes life in the most poetic words and is a perfect summary of how our lives can change,
what we may endure and how we should try to accept this. It really struck me in its relevance as we are entering such a busy
time of the year. Instead of just going from task to task like robots, wouldn’t it be great if we could actually be in every moment and see things for what they are. Yesterday as I was reading aloud our class novel, I looked up and I saw one of my
boys (who can be easily distracted) , absolutely hanging off my every word with big eyes and a wide smile! GOLD! That’s
what we miss if we are too busy and self-absorbed. On a lighter note – how are the costumes going?? Getting close now.
Enjoy your week and stop and smell the roses.
Mrs Clare Wilson
Year 6 and 7:
We are having a fantastic time on camp. Check out the front page of next week’s newsletter to hear all about it.
See you when we get back at 5pm tomorrow afternoon.

Get your family active and eating well
The healthy lifestyle program for families called PEACH™ Parenting, Eating and Activity for Child Health – is taking registrations now for 2015 with a new group commencing in February.
The free program is available to families with a child aged
between 5-11 years who is above a healthy weight their age.
The program is fun for kids and helps parents and carers make
healthy eating and activity a part of every-day life.
It runs for 6 months and consists of 10 group sessions that run
for 90 minutes each. The first 9 sessions are held weekly within the school term. Ongoing individualised family support is
offered through the second half of the program ending with
one final group session.
Some of the topics covered include nutrition skills, relationships with food and eating, changing family lifestyle behaviours and making healthy eating affordable. While the parent
sessions are taking place, children enjoy active play with a
trained child physical activity facilitator.
The program is funded by the Queensland government and
being delivered by the Queensland University of Technology.
