Our mission is very clear: We are a community of Christian stewards, working to live and preach the Word of God in thought, word and deed. We do this by the joyful CELEBRATION of the Sacraments of the Church and by the intentional FORMATION OF DISCIPLES of Christ, so that we may WITNESS to the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all that we meet in our local community. You will note that I have capitalized the three action verbs in our mission: CELEBRATE, FORM DISCIPLES and WITNESS. If you want to know what it means to be a member of St. Benedict Parish, remember these three words. As we continue to discern how to fulfill this mission, the time has come to complete the formation of the Pastoral Council. Over the past few months, the various working committees and ministry teams of the parish have each chosen their representative. These are the Spiritual and Social Events Ministries, Outreach Ministries, Liturgy Committee, Facilities Committee, Stewardship Committee and Evangelization and Catechetical Ministries. In addition to these there representatives from the Samoan and Filipino Communities, the School Board, the Finance Council, two at-large members and a youth member. A roster of current committee, team members, and community members is on the bulletin board. Also, please refer to the posted Parish Organizational Chart to see the big picture of how all the various ministries, teams and committees and councils work to help us fulfill our mission. In short, think of the parish as a great symphony orchestra with the councils as the groups of instruments (brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion) and the committees and teams as the individual sections (violins, trumpets, cellos, etc.). The pastor, with his staff acts as the conductor, keeping things working harmoniously. In this context, the specific role of the Pastoral Council is to help the pastor discern the needs of the parish and those of the local community of which we are a part. In a way, taking into consideration the talents and the needs of the parish, they help the pastor discern what pieces of music we should play to make the most of the gifts and the opportunities that we have here and how to best utilize our resources to accomplish our mission. Discerning the At-Large Members—In your pews you will notice a nomination form for the At-Large members for the Pastoral Council. After prayerful discernment, please take a moment to nominate two people to serve on the council. Please place the nomination form in the collection basket or mail or drop it by the office.
