Four to eight dogs from the Monadnock Humane Society (a non-profit animal shelter helping homeless cats, dogs, and small mammals) or For the Love of Dog – Rottweiler & Pit Bull Rescue (a non-profit local rescue specializing in Rottweilers and Pit Bull-type dogs) are transported to the jail for the classes. Dogs learn to sit, down, stay, and walk politely on leash, but the added value is spending time outside in the sun with handlers who use positive reinforcement training methods. The participants learn valuable skills in dog behavior and training that they can utilize with their own dogs when they return home or use to assist rescue dogs in the future. Some have volunteered for animal shelters in the past and hope to return. Participants commonly end class asking about the adoption process for a particular dog. The dogs learn basic obedience and socialization through these fun “field trips” outside of the shelter or rescue. Since the start of the program in July, many of the dogs have found forever homes. “Celebrate Nelson” Holiday Fair Saturday, November 22nd The Nelson Town Hall and the old library will be bursting with local creativity during the “Celebrate Nelson” Holiday Fair on Saturday, November 22nd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Locally (all by Nelson and Munsonville residents) created art, paintings, crafts, needlework, hand-spun yarn, bread, puzzles, books, honey, maple syrup, music CDs, and much more will be displayed on tables and easels, for show and for sale.
