A partnership between volunteer and lead trainer,
Lindsay Hamrick, the Cheshire County Correctional
Facility, the Monadnock Humane Society, and For
the Love of Dog – Rottweiler & Pit Bull Rescue is
bringing together rescue dogs and inmates in an
obedience-style program. Each month, Hamrick
teaches a one-hour orientation to men or women
interested in working one-on-one with rescue dogs.
The program covers canine behavior, shelter dog
trends, and safe handling. Upon completion of the
orientation, participants are assigned a rescue dog
to teach basic obedience and skills to enhance their
adoptability.
The classes, held twice monthly on the grounds
of the correctional facility, are taught by Hamrick (a

certified pet dog trainer and NH state director for The
Humane Society of the United States) and mimic a
traditional obedience class. Four to eight dogs from
the Monadnock Humane Society (a non-profit animal shelter helping homeless cats, dogs, and small
mammals) or For the Love of Dog – Rottweiler & Pit
Bull Rescue (a non-profit local rescue specializing in
Rottweilers and Pit Bull-type dogs) are transported
to the jail for the classes. Dogs learn to sit, down, stay,
and walk politely on leash, but the added value is
spending time outside in the sun with handlers who
use positive reinforcement training methods.
The participants learn valuable skills in dog behavior and training that they can utilize with their
own dogs when they return home or use to assist
rescue dogs in the future. Some have volunteered
for animal shelters in the past and hope to return.
Participants commonly end class asking about the
adoption process for a particular dog.
The dogs learn basic obedience and socialization
through these fun “field trips” outside of the shelter
or rescue. Since the start of the program in July, many
of the dogs have found forever homes.
