The GRIFFIN FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2014 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FROM SOUTHBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL WORD FROM THE HEADTEACHER Niall Smith “For The Love of George” George Pantziarka was a well loved Southborough boy who tragically lost his battle against cancer in 2011. His step-mother, Irene Kappes, has written a moving response to his illness, which will be launched in the Library after school on Wednesday 19th November at 5pm. All are welcome. Attendance I am delighted to inform you that attendance so far this academic year stands at 96.66%. This is a key measure of our effectiveness and improvement as a school, as can be seen by comparing these figures: Academic Academic Academic Academic Academic Academic Academic Year Year Year Year Year Year Year 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 - 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 95.78% 95.06% 95.22% 95.16% 94.36% 94.38% 92.80% Well done to all our students, staff, parents and carers! A Scholastic Book Fair is a wonderful reading event held in schools for every child to enjoy and Mrs Pike, our librarian, ensures that the school does not miss out on this regular and highly popular event! For each Book Fair, Scholastic supply schools with mobile bookcases packed with the very best books to sell to students to help them develop a life-long love of reading. Indeed, each Book Fair provides over 200 top children’s titles from over fifty publishers which are carefully chosen to suit the tastes and abilities of all our boys. As part of their promotional campaign, the company regularly runs a number of special competitions in order to engage the keenest readers within each school. Recently, the company ran a competition that required students to design their own ride for an amusement park. Year 9 student Dilan Khader was one of the many hundreds of students country-wide who entered the competition. Dilan designed a ‘UFO’ themed ride, where riders, once seated, had a large astronaut-like dome placed onto their heads. Inside the dome, space images would rotate, and together with atmospheric music and flashing lights, the rider would experience the sensation of being up in space. People at Scholastic were clearly very impressed with Dilan’s ideas as it was announced earlier this week that he had won first place in the competition! The prize includes a a full year’s pass for five peo- ple to visit the London Dungeons and £100 to spend on Scholastic books. Dilan is understandably thrilled. He commented: “I’ve never won anything in my life up until now. This is amazing and I really look forward to visiting the London Dungeon with all my family and friends. Mrs Pike has already given me the list of Scholastic books that I can choose from so that’s my next job! I love books and now I’m going to have a hundred pounds worth of them to read in the near future!” WORD OF THE WEEK: ‘CHAUVINISM’ I n its original meaning, the term ‘chauvinism’ means an exaggerated patriotism and a belligerent belief in national superiority and glory. According to legend, a French soldier, Nicholas Chauvin, was badly wounded in the Napoleonic Wars. After Napoleon abdicated, Chauvin was a fanatical Bonapartist despite the unpopularity of this view in Bourbon Restoration France. His single-minded, blind devotion to his cause started the use of the term. By extension, the word 'chauvinism' has come to include an extreme and unrea- soning partisanship on behalf of any group to which one belongs, especially when the partisanship includes malice and hatred towards rival groups. The word 'jingoism' is the British parallel form of this French word, but its meaning has not expanded beyond nationalism in the same way that the word 'chauvinism' has. 14 November The GRIFFIN 3 YEAR 11 STUDENTS RECEIVE PRINCE’S TRUST AWARD Southborough High School is committed to developing the talents of every single student within its care and goes to great lengths to deliver the appropriate courses to bring out the very best from all its’ students. Last year, the Inclusion department introduced, on behalf of a small cohort of students, a new XL programme from The Prince’s Trust called ‘Personal Development and Employability’. The programme, which is will stay with them on their Perregulated by Ofqual, is de- sonal Learning Record (PLR). signed to give young learners During Year 11 assembly the chance to work together to this week, five students who achieve goals relating to their took part in the course - nameeducation, training and future ly Charlie Lambert, Hubert lives. In order to achieve this, the students had to successfully complete three rigorous units of work: Interpersonal and Self-Management Skills, Managing Money and Participating Sport. Each unit was worth three ‘credits’ and the boys went the extra mile to ensure that they met all the requirements of each one. Many congratulations to these boys for all their hard work and a big thank you to both Mrs Lee-Potter and Mrs Pollicott for organising and running such a worthwhile course. 4 The GRIFFIN 14 November A HIGHLY RESPECTABLE RESULT BY SIXTH FORMERS IN THE UK SENIOR TEAM MATHS CHALLENGE Last Friday, four of our most talented Sixth Form Mathematicians, namely Thajevan Mahendran, Tristan Gregory, Minsoo Cha and Jia Yu Lee, took part in the London South Regional Finals of the UK Mathematics Trust Senior Team Maths Challenge, held at the Penrhyn Road site of Kingston University. This was the very first time that anyone from Southborough had taken part in the competition and it was clear on arrival that the majority of the contestants were from Grammar schools and independent schools. Indeed, on questioning some of the contestants, it was clear that they had been drilled relentlessly with past papers and rigorous tests before being selected to represent their schools. As ‘newbies’, our students had no such ‘training’ but they nonethe-less arrived with heaps of enthusiasm and natural mathematical talent. Twenty two schools took part, including Tiffin Boys and Girls, St Pauls, Hampton Grammar and Kingston Grammar School. In the first round of challenging mathematical questions, our Southborough team came in the top 3, an amazing feat given that this was entirely new territory to both students and staff. Another two rounds followed, involving ‘cross numbers’ and a ‘shuttle’ round which certainly tested everyone’s capabilities! After a pretty intensive three hours of tests, Southborough came a highly respectable ninth out of twenty two schools, a fabulous achievement given that this was the very first time that Southborough had entered and that no one had any real idea of what to expect beforehand. One un-named teacher from another school commented: “The Southborough team has put many of our seasoned competitors here to shame!” Whilst our four students had entered the competition feeling rather nervous and unsure, they all came out ‘buzzing’! Suffice to say, strategies for winning next year are already being put together and our team know that the competition better watch out for them next time! Many thanks to our Head of Maths, Mrs McIntyre, for all the amazing support and encouragement that she gave the team and well done to the students, who performed so well. The Fellowship of the Ring – Book 1 by J R R Tolkien The Fellowship of the Ring is the first part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. There are two books in the Fellowship of the Ring. The main character or hero in this story is a young man named Frodo Baggins who is on a mission to get rid of a magical ring that rules all the others, but young Frodo cannot go by himself, he needs a team to get to Mordor, the home of the orks, to be able to toss the ring into the main volcano. My favourite part in this book is probably the expected party (first chapter). I like this part because of how unexpected it is how Bilbo disappears at the end of his speech and how the crowd reacts. Jack Kemp (7GWA) SCHOOL BOOK CLUB November Teen Book Club leaflets will be given to students in Years 7,8, and 9 this week. Extra leaflets will be available in the Library for Key Stage 4 students.
