Last week, groups of Year 8, 9 and 12 students travelled up to the ExCeL exhibition centre in London to attend ’BETT’ , the world’s leading learning technology event . The event has been bringing innovation and inspiration to the education sector for over 30 years – and this year’s show was expected to be the biggest and the best in its history. And it obviously didn’t disappoint, as several days later, our students were still buzzing about their visit there! The annual event offers an ideal show-case to companies who wish to promote the very latest technological products designed to inspire, astound, impress and, most importantly of all, educate & engage young learners. There were workshops, guest appearances, and even a cartoonist present to entertain the crowds. Hashir Shahid, Anton Kehayov and Jake Waters (all pictured at the show) couldn’t wait to let The Griffin know about their day out. The one thing that they most definitely agreed on was the fact that it was the most amazing trip they’d been on EVER! The boys got the chance to spend the entire day there, moving from one stand to the next. Their ‘brief’, they said, was to research interesting, fun, innovative products that they’d love to have at Southborough. A large smart-board that was essentially a gigantic IPAD was one of the first items to be put into the virtual ‘Southborough shopping basket’, followed by an amazing super-strength microscope linked to a tiny computer screen. The boys were able to try this out, looking closely at their fingernails and skin. “I couldn’t believe how different my nails looked up close. Normally they look so smooth, but up close they have lots of ridges in them!” One additional ‘perk’ of being at the show, commented the boys, was the vast array of promotional gifts that were being handed out free of charge to passers-by. Popcorn, sweets, chocolate, pens, even T-shirts were on offer and the students couldn’t help but take advantage of them. “Well, it would have been rude not to!” all three boys agreed. Interestingly, one familiar company caught the eye of our students, that of Honeycomb. The boys went and spoke to the representatives on the stand and were delighted to see that Southborough High School was featured in a special case study, show-casing us as the first school to adopt their latest diary technology. The boys felt suitably proud! After a very long but highly exciting day, the boys had one last thing to do before setting off for home – a quick visit to the nearest Kentucky Fried Chicken shop. As the boys explained, visiting the best technology show in the world was hungry work! Many thanks to Headteacher Mr Smith, and IT teachers Mr Swinchin-Rew and Mr Smith for taking the students up to the show. 30 January The GRIFFIN 3 ORIENTEERING IN RICHMOND PARK Last Wednesday morning over thirty 6th formers found themselves in Richmond Park, ready to complete a practice walk of twenty kilometres for their Duke of Edinburgh Award. As you’d expect on a typical January day, it was pretty freezing out in the open and the students were dressed appropriately in their warmest clothes and wearing sturdy walking boots and carrying their rucksacks. Starting off as one big group at Kingston Gate, they were soon split into separate groups of six or seven people and given different sections of the vast park to navigate. Probably one of the hardest challenges for all students was not the long walk ahead - having b u t to adhere to Y7 & 8 RUGBY Congratulations to the following boys in Y7 & 8 for their efforts in the All Schools Festival at Mitcham Rugby club on Tuesday. Although the Y8s found the going very hard, the Y7 team lit up the tournament with some fast paced, attacking rugby, scoring 13 tries in their 3 fixtures against Stanley Park, Oasis and Kings School. YR 7 Angus, Findlay, Josh, Liam, Patrick, Anesh, Sagar. YR 8 Jamil, Guy, Ben, Jack, Archie, Tom, Joe, Will. the rule of NOT HAVING AND USING THEIR MOBILE PHONES for the entire day! It was imperative that every individual used their compass and map and didn’t resort to using google maps, where all the hard work of orienteering is done for you!!! Each student found themselves walking for the best part of the day, with only a short stop for a bite to eat at midday. Organisers Mr Walker and Miss Bassnett-Barker were impressed with the groups’ efforts. The students were pretty pleased with themselves, too, despite their aching feet and shivering bodies, which, to be honest, was probably less to do with the freezing weather and perhaps more likely down to mobile phone withdrawal symptoms! Next week, it’s the turn of our Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh students to get their walking boots on! 4 The GRIFFIN 30 January KAZZUM THEATRE COMPANY Last week 8C and members of the Year 10 GCSE class welcomed a return visit by Kazzum Theatre Company to continue with their #ReTold project. You may remember that these students were involved with a number of workshops early in the academic year, exploring the themes of escape, rejection and fitting in, linked to the story of refugee, Sen. The raps, videos and tableaux on Vine, Yappie and Instagram that the students produced in these workshops was sent to Drama practitioners at Stanmore College. They then developed the material that was loaded onto WeVideo for our students to edit and put together as a trailer and exploration of Sen's story yesterday. The lads had plenty of editorial choices to make, from themes, to the music, text and video. They worked really hard with noticeable concentration and creative flair. Their work can be seen here: https:// www.youtube.com/user/Kaz- Mithushan gets creative with his trailer (l to r) Nickel, Jamil and Rooney deep in concentration zumTheatre/videos with over 25 trailers developed over the session. Both classes will then use that work to develop their own versions of Sen's story within Drama. As Rooney from 8C said: 'It'd be great to use this as inspiration for a 20 minute play or film.' We are also excited to be participating in the third phase of the #ReTold project. Look out for more news of that in March! A massive thank you to James and Isabella from Kazzum as our workshop leaders. 30 January The GRIFFIN 5 YEAR 10 STUDENTS TAKE ON ‘ENTERPRISE IN A BOX INITIATIVE’ AND PROVE WHAT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE IS ALL ABOUT! A ‘social enterprise’ is an organisation that applies commercial strategies to maximise improvements in human and environmental well-being, rather than maximising profits for external shareholders. Last week our Prince’s Trust group of ten Year 10 students formed their very own ‘social enterprise’ team and were seen out and about the school, selling a range of exclusive ethical products in order to raise money for a charity close to their hearts. However, their business efforts were by no means unplanned and spur-of-the moment. Indeed, the students had previously been briefed and trained beforehand by ‘MyBnk’, a charity that spear heads a special initiative called ‘Enterprise –in-a-Box’, which in turn is designed to help develop students into becoming successful ‘social entrepreneurs’. Southborough was one of only two schools in the Borough that won a bid for the ‘My Bnk’ team to come and visit our students. In the first session, they introduced the concept of social enterprise and got the students to practise pitching and selling. In teams, they were asked to identify a target audience, form a business plan, set prices, analyse risk and rewards using SWOT analysis. The key focus was on teamwork and identifying different roles and responsibilities involved in planning and executing a project which involves selling a box of ethical goods. The only thing is, the students aren’t told what the goods are until the very day before they have to sell them! On Tuesday 20th January, the boys were able to see what goods were inside their ‘Enterprise in a box’ and as it turned out, it was a mix of ethically produced chocolates and toiletries. They then had a matter of hours to put their training into practice and put together a sales strategy that would maximise profits not for personal gain but for the benefit of a good cause. Put into two groups, the students competed against each other to raise the most money. Staff at Southborough were their obvious target audience and it was commented many times by them that the boys’ conduct, professionalism and mature approach to their business venture really shone through. Whilst the boys had anticipated that it would take a couple of days to sell everything, they were so good at their job, it took just a matter of hours before both teams had completely sold out! On Tuesday afternoon, representatives from ‘My Bnk’ came in to see the students present the results of their project, share experiences and discuss what they had learned over the past week. They also explored how the skills they had gained could be used in various work based environments. The boys raised a total of £90 which will be split equally between the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and a school project. Our visitors were very impressed indeed with our students’ efforts and achievements! Congratulations and well done to the following students who took part in the initiative: Mehmet Aker, Harris Barber, Cameron Ballard, John Cordeiro, Branden Okyere, Sam Sobkow, Scott Wells, Noureddine Aitouarab, Tarun Ramjeeawon and Dimitar Vukadinov. And many thanks to the My Bnk staff for spending valuable time training and appraising our boys, and Mrs Pollicott and Mrs Lee-Potter for organising and supporting the venture. 6 The GRIFFIN 30 January WORLD OF WORK ROADSHOW Y7 & 8 RUGBY Last week the year 7 and 8 rugby team played St Josephs from Carshalton. An excellent game ensued with loads of running rugby and very few stops in play. The boys put in loads of effort and crept into the lead just after half time with a break away try from Jamil. Some excellent defending from both sides kept the scores level until the last few minutes when unfortunately St Josephs broke some tired tackles and scored 2 late tries to beat us 6 tries to 5. The final score being 31-25. Well done to all involved. Mr Colbert The World of Work Roadshow is taking place on Wednesday 4th March at the Holiday Inn on Portsmouth Road in Long Ditton, KT6 5QQ. It’s aimed at Years 10, 11, 12 & 13 and is intended to provide students with opportunities to meet people, working in a range of industry sectors. Along with find out about training and future employment opportunities and the local labour market. Interested families should contact Head of MFL Mr Johnson at djohnson@southborough. kingston.sch.uk WORD OF THE WEEK: ‘SANGFROID’ Given the challenge of negotiating our way through report-writing, meetings with parents and carers, seeking to secure success for our pupils and coupled with the particulars of the 'Heating Project', our word this week is ‘sangfroid’. The word 'sangfroid' literally translates to read 'cold blood'. The word is used to suggest coolness and composure in most trying circumstances and when under threat or in danger. 8 The GRIFFIN 30 January Book of the week! Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J K Rowling So far I have read three chapters of my book, which is called Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. It’s about a boy wizard called Harry Potter. In this book, Harry’s enemy, Voldemort, starts to gather lots of followers to fight Harry and he also makes horcruxes which Harry destroys to make Voldemorte weaker and weaker. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 and I would definitely recommend it to children and adults.
