Southborough Christmas Appeal
I am delighted that this Christmas we are combining
all of our seasonal fundraising into one Christmas Appeal,
which will raise money for a range of good causes including
World Aids Day, Cecily’s Fund, Kingston Food Bank and
more. It is so easy to contribute to our appeal: a Penny-ADay, or a pen or a tin of food can make all the difference.
Please give generously.

‘FOR THE LOVE
OF GEORGE’
VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE
UNIVERSITY
Last Saturday my peers and
I had a wonderful opportunity
to visit the University of Cambridge. The exhausting journey
to Cambridge took us a while to
reach our destination. We were
greeted by members of the University and they led us to a lecture theatre. This enabled us
to understand what Cambridge
has to offer to its students; the
application procedure and student life. Also the subject choices made in Year 11 can have a
major impact on university options. The lecture we were given highlighted the importance
of good and strong A Level subject choices. We understood
that Maths is a key subject and
opens doors to higher education
and career opportunities. The
more Maths, the better.
Students of Cambridge University were also there, which
gave us a chance to go and
speak to them, also to enquire
about their choices and university life. Helping us understand
the importance of our forthcoming choices.
We were lucky enough to get
a tour from two fellow college
students around Corpus Christi College, Mr Smith’s college!
This is one of the oldest colleges
(founded in 1352)! We had the
opportunity to visit their rooms,
library and other places around
the college. For lunch we had a
chance to explore the beautiful
city itself.
Overall this day gave my
colleagues and I the rare opportunity to explore subjects
and university life in general. I
would recommend this trip to
any forthcoming years. A Saturday well worth spent! I would
like to thank our trip leader, Mr
Smith, accompanied by Mr Iles.

WORD OF THE WEEK: ‘EPISTEMOLOGY’
Our word of the week is 'epistemology'. Epistemology is a branch of philosophy concerned with
theories of knowledge. Epistemology seeks to address the question 'What does it mean to say that
one knows something?'. In, short, what is knowledge? Justified true belief perhaps?
On Wednesday 19th of November, I attended the book
launch for the story of the life of
George Pantziarka (a Southborough pupil) who unfortunately
lost his battle against cancer in
2011. Irene Kappes (George’s
step mother) wrote a book
about his life and what happened while he had his illness.
Irene read three extracts in the
book and each one of them really showed me how hard her
and her husband’s life must
have been. George’s courage
came through as Irene read the
extracts. A lot of George’s previous teachers attended, and
talked about how courageous
he was.
George was a very hard
working boy, who always did
the right things and had the
right attitude. He was a brilliant
role-model to the pupils further
down the school. His first type
of cancer was diagnosed when
George was three and a lump
was found on the side of his
face. But unfortunately, George
had a bigger issue when he
faced his second type of cancer
(skin cancer) at the age of fourteen. He kept trying and trying
to be positive in his life, when
there was so much negativity
happening in his life.
When George reached fifteen,
he was diagnosed with a third
cancer - an osteosarcoma of the
jaw - and he had to go to hospital
for two weeks and have the cancerous growth removed and his
jaw re-constructed. Afterwards,
George remained in the hospital,
but then he got the results. Not
all of the cancer had come out,
and they said they may have to
do radio therapy. George was really upset by this. Despite all the
pain George was going through,
he still wanted to go to school.
Unfortunately, there was a genetic disorder, which increased
the chances of George getting
another type of cancer. At the
age of seventeen, George had
gone through three types of cancer. After all the tragedy himself
and his family had been through,
George lost his battle.
Everybody who came along
was very engaged in what
George’s parents had to say.
The copies of the book are
available in the library for sixthform and staff. In addition, the
book can be purchased online
through Amazon.

JAMES AND THE
GIANT PEACH
On Thursday 4th December,
at 7pm in the school hall, come
and join the Drama, English and
Food Technology Department as
we present James and the Giant
Peach! The year 11 GCSE Drama group will perform the story
with puppets they have developed in class, while a mixture
of students from Year 7 and 8
will be the vocal artists for the
magically enhanced insects and
bugs that have taken over the
enormous peach! Refreshments
will be served by the Greedy
Griffins, all with a peachy flavour. Tickets on the door cost
just £2.50 and include a savoury
snack. I hope to see you there!
BOOK BRAN TUBS
FOR
SOUTHBOROUGH’S
CHRISTMAS
APPEAL
During the last week of
term, the Library will have
two book bran tubs available
in the Library. Books will be
gift wrapped and a gift tag will
be attached giving a clue as to
the book’s content. Students
and staff will be invited to select a book from the bran tub
for a minimum of £1. All proceeds will go towards Southborough’s Christmas appeal.
If you have any good quality fiction books (adult or junior) that you no longer need,
the Library will be happy to
receive them for the bran
tubs. Please give any donations to Mrs Pike in the Library
by 10th December.

The Hunger Games is the
best trilogy I’ve read in
my life. I really enjoyed
the suspense in the trilogy
and just the story line
is amazing. The main
character, Katniss Everdeen,
really brings emotion to
the story and makes you
empathise with her.

NEW CANTEEN PRICES, EFFECTIVE
AS FROM 5TH JANUARY 2015
The school is currently reviewing its school food policy in keeping with guidelines on School Food
Standards recently issued by the
government and which will become mandatory in all academies
and maintained schools from January 2015. The guidelines are
intended to make it easier for
schools to create imaginative,
flexible and nutritional menus for
their pupils and at Southborough
we will use them new to help relaunch our catering operation in
the New Year. The aim is to provide an even more varied, tasty
and healthy menu and to ensure
our pupils receive the nutritious
and balanced diet they need and
deserve.
As a start to this process
we have reviewed our existing
canteen prices noting that they
have not been increased for at
least four years and have slipped
behind our supplier cost increases. We are therefore implementing modest price increases as
from the start of next term, 5th
January. The revised price list is
below.
We will of course keep you
fully informed about the exciting improvements we are planning to introduce!
