CHRISTMAS MUSIC CONCERT BONANZA:
A WONDERFUL EVENING
TO REMEMBER!
F
ollowing
many
weeks
of rehearsals, the main
hall opened its doors last
Thursday evening to hoards of
students, parents, relatives and
staff eager to enjoy an evening
of musical entertainment from
a host of talented students at
Southborough High School. And
it was clear from the onset that
the standard of musical talent
had grown exponentially in both
quality and size!
Genially co-hosted by Mr
Burns and Mr Botha- the evening began with a distinctively
upbeat feel with the only recently formed Year 10 band performing ‘Hall of Fame’, followed
by Year 11 student Olly Aldridge
and 6th former Tim Nagamani
performing ‘Hearts on Fire’ on
guitar.
The Singing Club won over
the hearts of the audience with
a very endearing rendition of
‘Whistle for The Choir’, followed
by Sixth Former Josh Sattaur
playing a fantastic version of
‘All of Me’ on the guitar.
The biggest and by far the
nicest change this year was the
fact that so many more students
- particularly Year 7 - took part
in the music concert, something
that clearly demonstrates how
important the Creative Arts are
within the curriculum. The entire class of 7F - with soloists
Rhys Quee, Mageesh Manivannan, Luke Taperell and Diction
Pun - sang a brilliant version
of ‘We Three Kings’, followed by
a special music clip, where stu-
dents from 9D had written and
composed music to accompany
a rather scary film clip entitled
‘A Company of Wolves’.
It was then time for French
teacher Mr Ruffe to take to the
stage and sing a powerful and
impressive rendition of ‘Noel’,
which impressed the audience
no end. A very upbeat and jolly version of ‘Jingle Bells’ was
played and sung by class 7C,
followed once again by accomplished guitarists Olly Aldridge
and Tim Nagamani, who performed a highly entertaining
version of ‘Tribute’.
After a short interval where
the audience enjoyed a glass of
wine and a mince pie, a large
group comprising of 7A and 8A
blew the audience away with
their utterly amazing and enthusiastic performance of ‘Vois
sur ton Chemin’ , a song that
they had practised with French
Teacher Mr Ruffe during lessons.
With French spirit still in the
air, Head of Modern Foreign
Languages Mr Johnson and his
‘Band’, including IT specialist
Gavin Hanel and a number of
upper school, then took to the
stage to perform a George Harrison favourite’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ – a fabulous
staff/student enterprise!
Getting the audience back
into a more festive spirit, class
7A, with soloists Cameron
Weston-Shaw and Arushan Hariharan – delivered a beautiful
and moving version of ‘In The
Bleak Midwinter’, something
that they repeated in the Carol Concert later the following
week.
A small group of Year 7 and
8 singers got together for the
very first time earlier this term
to form ‘The Bandits’ and they
performed their very first song
together, a lovely version of My
Broken Heart.
Highly talented pianist Joe
Girton, a Year 11 GCSE Music
student, then performed a marvellous rendition of ‘Prelude in
C’ by Bach which left the audience speechless. The fabulous
school Jazz Band then delivered
a rousing version of The Entertainer and Peter Gunn Theme,
which had people tapping their
feet in the aisles.
With the recent ‘Human
Rights Day’ still very much in
mind, Sixth Former and Deputy Headboy Wayne Damoo sang
a thought-provoking version
of ‘Stand By Me’ accompanied
once again by Tim Nagamani on
guitar.
Ending the evening, the Ukulele Group performed ‘Silent Night’
beautifully, followed by a very upbeat ‘Hound Dog’ which was sung
by the whole of class 8A.
Everyone present agreed
that it had been a really enjoyable evening!
Thanks
Many thanks must go the following for all their outstanding
contribution and help in making this concert such a success:

6TH FORMERS HOST CHRISTMAS
PARTY TO REMEMBER FOR OUR
SPECIAL OAP GUESTS
6
th Formers and Southborough staff once again
pulled out all the stops to
make the senior citizen Christmas party go with a swing.
The event is held as a way of
saying a big ‘thank you’ to all
those senior citizens living close
by to the school and it’s something that we all look forward to
each year as our guests are always such great company and
know how to enjoy themselves!
Many of these men and women have had their own children,
grandchildren, extended family
and friends attend the school
at some point during their lives
and this annual ‘get-together’
is a way of showing how much
their kind community spirit and
support over the years is still
much appreciated by both staff
and students at Southborough
High School.
Held in the Sixth Form common room, the space looked
unrecognizable, decorated with
brightly coloured paper chains
and snow flakes and quirky window decorations that mimicked
a stain glass window effect – all
made by Art Teacher Mrs Adams
and her lower year Southborough students. Sixth Formers
ensured that there was a true
sense of occasion in the room
with sparkly table decorations
and Christmas music in the air
as our visitors arrived for an afternoon of fun.
Very
generous
spirited
members
of
Southborough
staff donated over one hundred Christmas gifts – ranging
from toiletries, wine, chocolate,
whiskey, candles and scarves –
and these served as ideal ‘prizes’ that were on display for our
guests to pick and choose from
throughout the course of an afternoon packed with food, drink,
bingo and raffles. We even offered a display of costume jewellery (again donated by kindly
staff) and guests were asked to
choose their favourite piece as
a keepsake of the afternoon’s
festivities.
With our guests settled into
their seats with a warming glass
of sherry - or two! - Head of
Music Ms Watkins and a small
team of Year 7 and 8 singers
sung a number of favourite
Christmas songs to our appreciative guests, who sang along
with much gusto. The singers
really did the school proud, as
5
they sang beautifully!
After the sing-along, it was
time for a game of BINGO,
where our guests got the chance
to win loads of those lovely donated prizes! Hosted by our very
own Mr Iles, his cheeky number
calling went down a treat!
Following the success of last
year’s catering students, this
year’s Greedy Griffin team followed in their footsteps to ensure that guests enjoyed yet
another scrumptious selection
of both sweet and savoury fare.
With the support and guidance
of Head of Food Technology Ms
Pollitt, Food Technology Technician Mrs Gregory, together with our new Level 3 BTEC
Professional Cookery 6th form
students, these able students
prepared a truly delicious ‘afternoon tea’ comprising of mini
sandwiches and crisps, cheese
scones, followed by mince pies,
cupcakes and a lovely selection
of gateaux and chocolate tortes.
The Greedy Griffins and 6th
formers excelled themselves by
making absolutely everything
from scratch, which impressed
our guests immensely. Dressed
in their ‘cookery whites’, the students had the honour of serving
the food to guests themselves,
serving at tables just like you
would in a professional restaurant!
Headteacher
Mr
Smith
popped along to the party to
speak to our guests and a number of 6th formers – including
Head Boy Kiran Arokiasamy and
Deputy Headboy Rukshan Rajamanthri – spent time mingling
and chatting with guests.
Our visitors appeared to have
a very happy couple of hours
and the constant raffle draws
ensured that they all went home
laden with Christmas gifts and
goodie bags crammed with left
over cakes and cookies. Indeed,
one lucky guest won the top
prize gift of a beautifully decorated Christmas cake – made by
our very own students. Everyone who took part agreed that it
had been a highly enjoyable and
fun afternoon.
A big thank you to all those
students and staff who helped
on the day, including:
A whole host of Sixth Formers
who helped set up the common
room beforehand and made our
guests feel welcome throughout
the afternoon;
The 6th form BTEC Professional Cookery students Aravint
Chandiran and Lawrence Boloco
for planning the catering and
overseeing the Greedy Griffins;
The Greedy Griffin Team of
lower school catering students,
including Dylan White, Omar
Zuromba, Jonathan Adepoju,
Basil Raja, Jamie Sowankumpoo,
Tyler Yim, Charlie Briggs, Zac
Weston, Jason Weston Airey,
Luke Gregory, Josh Baxter,

The Year 7 and 8 singing
group: Diction Pun, Rhys Quee,

Staff: Ms Pollitt, Mrs Gregory, Ms Watkins, Mrs Adams, Mrs
Drinkwater, Mr Iles, Mr Sanders,

All Southborough staff who
generously donated such a wide
range of wonderful gifts!

the party, and co-ordinating all the activities to ensure it was such a success.

UNDER 17 CRICKET TEAM SMASH INTO
THIRD ROUND OF T20 INDOOR LEAGUE
After winning the first two rounds of the Surrey
Cricket 6-aside Under 17 T20 Indoor League, Southborough 6th formers /Upper school students took
part in the third round on Friday afternoon against
Tiffin Boys. Our boys batted first, gaining 160 for 2.
Top scorer Adam Lawrence gained 38 runs (retired),
followed by Conor McElligott, with 33 runs. The opponent, much to our delight, scored just 60 runs all out,
with Rafeh Jafri getting three wickets, Prince Singh
getting two wickets and Conor McElligott the remaining wicket. Cricket coach and Assistant Head of Sixth
Form Mr Colbert is thrilled with his team’s success,
as they are now top of the League. The boys now go
through to the next round, playing Old Wimbledonians on the 23rd January. Good luck, lads!
The Horrible
Histories
Series
Horrible Histories
are great, funny and
interesting books. The
books cover different
times in History:
Romans, Tudors, Greeks
and more! It is suitable
for children but adults
like it too. I enjoy these
very much and finally my
favourite is the Terrible
Tudors because it’s really
funny and you learn from
it too.

HELP WITH FINANCE AT UNI
Is your son/daughter planning to go to University next year and you want to find out if they
are eligible for additional monetary support?
Many parents/carers may not be aware of the
wide variety of grants, scholarships, bursaries
and other sources of monetary support that your
son/daughter may be eligible for when they go
to university.
Thankfully, there are actually a wide num-
ber of organisations and charities out there that
may be able to help you. Please visit the Sixth
Form page of school website, under ‘Letters &
Information’. There you will find a useful document which gives you a few pointers as to
which websites you should access to find out
more. It may mean a little effort and digging
around on your part, but the results could be
very rewarding!
WORD OF THE WEEK: ‘USURIOUS’
Given the season of good cheer, our word this week is 'usurious' derived from usury... the medieval
practice of charging interest even beyond the legal limit. This word commonly refers to activity
that greatly exceeds the bounds of reason or moderation. Thus we have 'exhorbitant rents' and
'extortionate prices' and even 'spending an outrageous amount on entertainment' and indulging in
'immoderate laughter'. No doubt all these 'examples' are being showcased both this week and next.

NEW CANTEEN PRICES, EFFECTIVE
AS FROM 5TH JANUARY 2015
The school is currently reviewing its school food policy in keeping with guidelines on School Food
Standards recently issued by the
government and which will become mandatory in all academies
and maintained schools from January 2015. The guidelines are
intended to make it easier for
schools to create imaginative,
flexible and nutritional menus for
their pupils and at Southborough
we will use them new to help relaunch our catering operation in
the New Year. The aim is to provide an even more varied, tasty
and healthy menu and to ensure
our pupils receive the nutritious
and balanced diet they need and
deserve.
As a start to this process
we have reviewed our existing
canteen prices noting that they
have not been increased for at
least four years and have slipped
behind our supplier cost increases. We are therefore implementing modest price increases as
from the start of next term, 5th
January. The revised price list is
below.
We will of course keep you
fully informed about the exciting improvements we are planning to introduce!
