T he London Southend Airport Charity Committee is very pleased to announce that it is operating two Santa Flights on Saturday 6 December, thanks to the support of its partner Stobart Air. And it is all to raise funds for Fair Havens Children’s’ Hospice. The flights – which will be crewed by a team of happy elves and other festive favourites will take off from London Southend Airport at 9.45am and 10.40am and last for around 20-minutes. These will then be followed by fun and games at a party in the terminal building, attended by Father Christmas and the local Guide Dog partnership. Members of the public can purchase tickets for the Santa Flight and Party at £40 each by calling the London Southend Airport Flight Briefing Office on 01702 608 150. In addition, pupils at eight Southend schools have been invited to submit drawings of aircraft, with the best from each school winning a pair of tickets to take to the skies. London Southend Airport’s new Operations Director Jason Ivey says: “ A festive Santa Flight is a truly magical fun day out for the children and their families, so we are delighted to be able to provide this whilst also raising much needed funds for such a great local charity. ” Please note children under the age of 12 must to be accompanied by a guardian over the age of 12 at the time of flight. This is a hand luggage only flight and no ID is required for travel. Normal airport security procedures will apply. A “festive Santa Flight is a truly magical fun day out for the children and their families ” Fair Havens Hospice is the only place in the area wholly dedicated to caring for adults who have an illness which could shorten their life. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Eastwood, Rayleigh, Hockley & Rochford areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help! This is due to the fact that the annual average level of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) – a pollutant associated with vehicle exhaust emissions – Is just over the National Air Quality Objective at some areas within the town centre. Air Quality has been monitored in the town centre over a number of years and whilst there had been a small reduction in nitrogen dioxide levels in 2012, since then there had been no further improvement. Therefore, we must start a process to reduce this to below the target level. The first step is to designate an area, called an AQMA, for which we can implement an action plan. There will be a public consultation exercise in the Rayleigh area to determine the boundaries of the AQMA. The affected roads included within the proposal include Crown Hill, Eastwood Road, High Road, High Street, Hockley Road and Websters Way. However it is possible, having considered responses to this consultation, that this area could be increased. Actions beneficial to the air quality can take also take place within or outside the boundary of the AQMA. “ Air Quality has been monitored in the town centre over a number of years ” Once the consultation responses have been considered the finalised footprint of the AQMA will be agreed. The Council will then create an Action Plan, explaining how it will address the issues identified, this plan will then be subject to its own public consultation. Get Me Out Of Here’, where he was crowned king of the jungle in 2007. “ Ronnie Barker was just fantastic, a very generous person to work with ” C hristopher has been a regular on the pantomime scene for years and this year comes to the Cliffs Pavilion along with ‘Baywatch’ and ‘Knight Rider’ TV legend David Hasselhoff, also known as the Hoff. This years panto ‘Peter Pan’ with a fabulous cast is sure to be a huge hit with audiences across Essex. We caught up with Christopher for a chat to find out more about him and this years panto. What do you enjoy most about panto? The audience! The fact that every performance is different and the audience give you the lift you need and they are always so varied an age from babies to OAPs – it’s great to work with a live audience. Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 16 Will this be your first time working with the Hoff? Yes it will – I do know David and I have done little jobs with him before. He’s great fun and I look forward to working with him properly. One of the biggest TV shows you appeared in was ‘Porridge’, what was it like to be part of such an iconic series? ‘Porridge’ was forty years ago – where has the time gone? No-one who worked on the show would have believed the series would have lasted as long as it has and is still a firm favourite today. What was it like working with a comedy legend like Ronnie Barker? Ronnie Barker was just fantastic, a very generous person to work with 24/10/2014 13:49 CELEBRITY INTERVIEW - he didn’t consider himself a comedian but a comedy actor. If Ronnie felt that the lines that had been written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais would be better said by someone else, he would suggest they be said by that other actor. it is about being lucky not talent, being in the right place at the right time, however I qualify that statement by saying that it is important to work hard both at the profession but also ensure that you have another career to fall back on in order to look after your family. In 2007 you won ‘I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!’ How did you find the whole experience and was it a lot harder than you imagined? When you’re not working, what do you like to do in your spare time? It was the highlight of my career! To know that I had the love and affection of the whole nation – it was mind-blowing. What you saw is what you got - it’s an experience I will never forget, to be ‘King of the Jungle’. I go on holiday, spend time with friends, go to restaurants, the theatre and I love the cinema. As you get older the one thing you can do is say No so that I can do these wonderful things. After you have finished panto in Southend, what’s next for you? Who was your hero growing up and why? When I was in Salisbury Rep there was an actor called Oliver Gordon, who was a director and performer. He played dame in the panto and it was when I was watching him that I got hooked on theatre. It was only when I played PC Biggins in panto did I realise my ambition – Oliver Gordon was my real hero. If you could work with any actor in the world, who would it be and why? I would like to work with George Clooney – I like him and would like the opportunity to get to know him more. Did you always want to be an actor growing up? Yes! I wanted to be three things an actor, vicar and chef! I’ve been a vicar – when I played a wicked sex-crazed vicar called Osbourne Whitworth in the costume drama Poldark. I’m not a bad cook as people will know from having appeared on ‘Celebrity Masterchef’ this year. All I’ve got to do now is crack the acting! What would be the one piece of advice you would give any aspiring actors/actresses? I always say ‘Don’t Do It!’ I’ve been very lucky and had a phenomenal career - I always say Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 17 I will be heading to a hot climate to recover from doing two shows a day and to recover from The Hoff – only joking! I’ve got lots in the pipeline but in this profession it is very difficult to guarantee what will happen next – this business changes so much and that’s what I like about it, it’s never boring. Best of luck! 24/10/2014 13:49 18 EDITORIAL Anti-Social Behaviour Support A new initiative designed to ensure that victims of persistent Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) receive the best possible support to resolve problems has been launched in Southend last month. V ictims of ASB in the Southend-on-Sea Borough will now be able to use the ASB Case Review in the event that they feel that partner agencies have not taken action in respect of their complaint. Relevant partners including the Council, Southend Community Safety Partnership, Essex Police, health providers and registered social housing providers, and these agencies will have a duty to undertake a review when the case meets the defined threshold. The initiative was introduced by the AntiSocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, 2014. ASB is any aggressive, intimidating or destructive activity that damages or destroys another person’s quality of life. Cllr Ian Gilbert, Executive Councillor for Community Development, says: “ Partner agencies in Southend are absolutely committed to not only tackling anti-social behaviour, but ensuring that cases are properly dealt with. “ ” Cases of repeat, persistent, ASB can blight people’s lives and this new initiative will provide victims with the opportunity to have their case reviewed where the victim considers no action has been taken, and to see if there are additional actions that Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 18 could be undertaken to help support the victim and resolve the bad behaviour. ” Rob Tinlin, Chief Executive of Southendon-Sea Borough Council and Chair of the Southend Community Safety Partnership, says: “ We welcome this new step which will help to raise the profile of this issue and also give confidence to local people that if they feel their case has not been properly considered there is a way to appeal the response centrally. ” In Southend and across Essex, it has been agreed that a person can use the ASB Case Review process if they have suffered three incidents of ASB within the last six months and believe no action has been taken. However, if the ASB is of a Hate Crime nature, then the threshold will be one incident within the last six months where the victim considers no action has been taken. “ We welcome this new step which will help to raise the profile of this issue ” If the victim is unhappy with the conclusions of the review, they will be able to appeal to the chair of their local Community Safety Partnership, and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner will be notified. The nine local authorities of Rochford, Southendon-Sea, Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Epping Forest, Harlow, and Thurrock have commissioned the service to improve outcomes for single homeless people across the region. Last year’s annual rough sleeper estimate reported 19 people were sleeping rough in Southend-on-Sea alone. From recent referrals via the national referral line StreetLink, about 38 people were estimated to be sleeping rough across the South Essex area. If members of the public are concerned about anyone sleeping rough, they can contact the national 24 hour rough sleeping referral line StreetLink on 0300 500 0914 or online at www.streetlink.org.uk. This referral will then link with the South Essex service. People will also be referred in through Housing services direct to the St Mungo’s Broadway team. The authorities are now working with homelessness organisation St Mungo’s Broadway to provide outreach and a ‘No Second Night Out’ (NSNO) service to rough sleepers, through funding from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The NSNO element aims to quickly help anyone new to sleeping rough off the streets and into accommodation, with a more traditional ‘outreach’ service helping people who may have slept rough on and off for some time because of a range of complicated factors around housing or health issues. “ Last year’s annual rough sleeper estimate reported 19 people were sleeping rough in Southend ” The South Essex Homelessness Assessment and Reconnection Team (SEHART) service will have three outreach workers partnering with volunteers recruited from among the public, as well as peer volunteers with an experience of moving on from homelessness themselves. Samantha also added that Sam deserved to win just for managing to cope with an Ofsted inspection at the same time as moving home and finishing her Level 5 childcare degree. “ Ms Collinson added: Sam provides a setting that is inspirational and exceptional in the way that it nurtures and develops children in her care and supports working families. Sam doesn’t normally like a lot of attention, but on this occasion, she really needs to know how many lives she has impacted and how special she is. ” In describing Sam’s award, Nursery World magazine said: For Sam, childminding is not just a job; it’s her absolute passion. She goes out of her way to help families support children in her care. When one parent’s car broke down hours before a planned holiday, Sam drove the family 100 miles so they could enjoy their vacation. “ ” She also regularly drops parents to appointments if they don’t drive, and always makes sure she accommodates families’ needs, even if it means working longer hours. “ ” Parents say that Sam, who has worked Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 27 ” “ Her efforts to support families were recognised by Ofsted in her latest report, calling Sam’s partnership with parents ‘superb’ and her approach to safeguarding and children’s well-being ‘inspirational’. ” “ Delighted Sam said: I really love this job. I started out as a Nanny, so it was a natural progression to go on to qualify as a childminder. It was a real thrill to receive the award which was presented at a ceremony in London. ” “ It’s a team effort really because I receive a great deal of help from the Council’s Early Years Team. ” “ Sam achieved a grade of outstanding. “ as a childminder for four years, is like a second mum to their children. L ucy Hodges and her team travelled to Sheboygan, in Wisconsin, USA, to take part in the event, where they achieved a clean sweep by winning all of their 13 races. Blind Match Racing differs from fleet racing as there are no sighted observers, and sailors have to rely on various sounds in order to navigate. Lucy's team was made up of Liam Cattermole and Vicki Sheen, who are both visually impaired, with the support of coach Ian Shirra. “ ” It was an incredible experience, she said: We had temperatures varying from 40 degrees to 80 degrees Farenheit so it was difficult to focus, with some long, cold days on the water. For me personally, match racing for blind sailors has improved by sailing skills and confidence. “ ” It has been an incredible year for Lucy as she received an MBE for her services to Blind Sailing in the Queen's New Year's Honours List. This is on top of winning a Gold medal in 2013 at the IFDS BlindWorld Sailing Championships in Japan and GOld at the Blind Match Racing Championships in Italy earlier this year, giving her two world titles and an international title. Lucy, 38, began sailing at Southend Marine Activities Centre, and took over as commodore for the charity Great Britain Blind Sailing five years ago, said: Receiving the MBE was really exciting really, especially getting awarded it by Prince Charles. It was amazing how he asked questions and I was allowed the time to tell him about Great Britain Blind Sailing and the fact that some of the volunteers have given up 20 years. “ “ ” It was quite nerve-wracking, but once Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 29 you're there and in front of him all your nerves go away because he puts you at ease. It's a massive boost for the charity. ” Lucy also works as a commercial manager for Southend HM Revenue & Customs and believes her sporting achievements have helped with her career. “ She said: I've had so much out of blind sailing. It gave me personal skills and enabled me to get a job. So now I try and encourage other people and seek to give them the opportunities I had. ” Lucy has not only run the charity but also taken an active part in her local community over the years. In 2010 she was awarded Rochford District Sports Personality of the year, organised by Rochford District Council and Castle Point Borough Council. “ I think it's good kudos for the local authority to run something like the Sports Awards as they help to develop people in the local community, she said. To see me getting an award encourages youngsters and others with a disability as they can have someone to look to locally, and have a bit of drive and ambition. It's also good for parents of a child born with a disability to see someone where it hasn't stopped them in life, they've got a job and a sporting career. much out of blind sailing. It gave me personal skills and enabled me to get a job ” ” “ Lucy would like to thank the EEAST (Essex and Southend Sports Trust) for their funding, which enabled herself and her coach to attend the World Championships. “hadI'veso ” Picture below (left to right): Ian Shirra, Lucy Hodges, Vicki Sheen, Liam Cattermole. 24/10/2014 13:49 TREE SURGEONS 30 DO YOU NEED A PROFESSIONAL TREE SURGEON? Southend-on-Sea Borough Council Leader, Councillor Ron Woodley said: Southend Cenotaph is an extremely significant monument which is far more than a piece of history. It stands in continual tribute to the men and women in our borough who made the supreme sacrifice and shows they will never ever be forgotten. “ “ ” The people who have so recklessly damaged it have shown massive disrespect – not just to the families of those honoured by this memorial – but to everyone with relatives who laid down their lives in the service of their country. “ We are horrified that this ugly graffiti has scarred our Cenotaph just weeks away from Remembrance Sunday. ” even more tragic that the vandals “haveIt isstruck just as the Cenotaph was undergoing conservation works to coincide with the centenary of the start of the First World War. ” “ This was specially planned to ensure it would be preserved in the best possible condition for many generations to come. ” “ We have contacted Police about this act of destruction and will do our utmost to make sure those responsible for such a despicable act will be brought to justice. The tag is clearly visible so I would urge anyone that recognises it or knows who did this to report it to the Police on 101. ” In the meantime, this graffiti will be swiftly removed and the Cenotaph renovation programme will continue ready for Remembrance Sunday - 9th November ” VAN HIRE VAN HIRE FROM ONLY £35 SELF DRIVE HIRE Medium vans from £35 p/day Large vans from £40 p/day Luton Tail Lift vans from £45 p/day www.canduvanhire.co.uk Telephone: 01702 541145 366 Rayleigh Road, Eastwood SS9 5PT (Next to Eastwood Police Station) Find us on Facebook or Twitter Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 31 24/10/2014 13:49 www.ellis-hair.co.uk Check web-site and Facebook pages for this month’s offers Your Essex Local Guide 38 Rayleigh 32p.indd 32 24/10/2014 13:49
