Little Blue Books
I know, I know…it seems too early to be saying
something about Advent! However, it is indeed that
time. The First Sunday of Advent will be upon us in
just two short weeks! (Yikes!) So, it’s not too early for
us to begin to think about how we will make the most
of Advent Time this year. Once again the parish is glad
to offer something to help you.
Yes, we are again going to offer the Little Blue Book
for Advent! These books, with daily meditations for
Advent and Christmas, were available last year and
people absolutely loved them! I received many, many
positive comments about them, so it was the decision
of the Liturgy Committee that we offer them again.
The reflections are, of course, new for this year, not
repeats of last year. The books will be available beginning next weekend, November 22-23. Be sure to look
for them and to take one, as it is expected they will go
fast.
Have you returned your “Saintly Sweepstakes” entry?
The entry deadline is this coming Wednesday,
November 19, to get your “Saintly Sweepstakes” entry
in if you have not already done so! The explanation of
the sweepstakes and the entry form was provided in
last weekend’s bulletin. We’ll count up all the entries
and then move on to round two, when we’ll present
the top vote-getters and ask you to vote on those choices. Will we need several rounds of voting for a clear
winner to emerge? Who will the saint be??? I can barely stand the suspense! Because of the early bulletin
deadline, I have not yet seen any entries as of this writing, so I can’t offer any information. I have heard a
very strong rumor, though, that there is quite a buzz up
in heaven as several saints are hoping for the honor of
being selected. Holy competition!!!
Not leaving early
We gave a brief presentation before each Mass last
weekend asking participants to be mindful of not leaving Mass early, and, as you have seen, we followed up
with another “consciousness raiser” before all the
Masses this weekend. We’ve done our part by putting
the reminder out in public; now we ask you to do your
part! Please be respectful of the sacred action of the
liturgy, and of your brothers and sisters, by not leaving
Mass early. Let’s remind each other how important
this is!
Eucharistic Gathering
While we’re on the subject of our participation at
Mass, I ask you to join with me in thinking about what
it means for us to gather as the body of Christ for the
celebration of the Eucharist. In particular, I’d like to
suggest the idea that perhaps we all need a little bit of a
turnaround in the way we look at gathering for Mass
and the availability of Masses.
When we gather for Mass, it should be an expression of who we are as the body of Christ, as baptized
members of Christ’s body who are one in the community of faith. Our faith is communal and our experience of the Lord in the Eucharist is communal. As
such, Mass is about what we bring to it. We call it the
“Sacrifice of the Mass,” and we are supposed to bring
the offering (sacrifice) of our life and join that to
Christ’s offering (sacrifice) which is made present
through the prayer of the Church. Although our encounter with the Risen Lord at the celebration of the
Eucharist might be intensely personal, it is never individual: it is always as a member of the Church, and it
is through the prayer of the Church that we meet the
Lord as He is present. Mass is never about “me;” it’s
always a case of “us.” Listen to the pronouns that are
prayed in the prayers at Mass: prayers are always
prayed in the plural.
I fear, though, that perhaps somewhere along the
line we got things backwards — we let “the tail wag
the dog,” so to speak. By that I mean somehow we got
the idea that gathering for Mass is supposed to be
about individual convenience. The phrase “Masses of
convenience” is even a phrase that would have been
heard in the not-too-distant past. The problem with
such thinking is that it sets up a consumerist mentality,
as though “the Church,” as a distanced-group of experts or providers, were providing some service or
commodity that consumers simply come and receive.
When it’s stated that boldly (and coldly), of course we
would agree that’s not the way Church is supposed to
be. Yet, don’t we often send exactly that kind of message by our approach and behavior? Our approach
should be that Mass is important enough that we make
ourselves available for it (and schedule our day/
weekend/life around it), not vice versa. The spirituality
of offering that is the heart of Eucharistic spirituality is
incompatible with the notion that Mass has to be available on “my” terms. Eucharistic spirituality is about
self-offering and self-giving, not selfishness.
Neither is the celebration of the Eucharist about
getting or receiving a service or a commodity; rather,
it’s about gathering and offering, in the same way a
family comes together to share life and love. We come
to Mass for the sake of encountering the Lord as He is
present in the members of His body and in the sacred
actions of the liturgy, not out of our own convenience.
When we make the shift to looking at gathering for
Mass in that way, all sorts of new ways of thinking
Page 4
November 16, 2014
emerge. We can even begin to ask all sorts of questions
about the quality of our Eucharistic celebrations.
We all know what it’s like to be at a Mass when
the pews are full, and the singing and the responses
from the assembly are full, and vigorous, and loud
enough such that they carry us along in the act of worship: this robust quality of worship deepens and
strengthens our faith because it builds us up as we give
witness to each other. Conversely, when responses and
singing are lacking because the church is half or threequarters empty, that too impacts our faith, but in a negative way, because the lackluster environment and participation don’t adequately express the quality and
depth our worship should have. Remember, the celebration is not about “Jesus and me,” and it’s not about
just being there to fulfill a duty or to “get something,”
but rather it’s about expressing who we are as Church
— as people who live a common life together in the
Lord, and who therefore deepen our faith together as
we give witness to each other.
I often remark, when giving classes in liturgy, that,
given what Eucharistic celebration is all about —
namely, unity with the Lord and with one another
(“one bread, one body;” “one Lord, one faith, one baptism”) — the starting question is really “how few
Masses do we need given the size of our worship
space” (so that we can come as close as possible to the
ideal of all gathering together as one to worship) rather
than “how many Masses can we crank out” as though
we were scheduling performances or marketing opportunities. Again, though, this might mean a radical shift
in the way we think about Mass, but I’ll repeat what I
said a moment ago: Mass should be important enough
that we make ourselves available for it (and schedule
our day/weekend/life around it), not vice versa. Selfoffering, not self-interest, is the heart of Eucharistic
spirituality.
Now, in case you’re starting to get worried, RELAX! All of this is NOT a prelude to introduce chang-
es into the Sunday Mass schedule! No change is on the
horizon right now. However, these are important questions that we should all keep in the back of our mind
and reflect on once in a while. A change at some point
in the future might have to be looked at, partly because
of a change in the number of priests that might be assigned here at any given point (it’s possible that OLPH
might not continue to have the same number of priests
in the future that it has now), but, even more importantly, also because of the issue of the quality of
our worship.
Look around the next time you are at Mass and
think about this. I’m not suggesting any changes, nor
am I suggesting there are perfect or pre-ordained answers for any of this. I simply ask you to reflect on,
and even pray about, these thoughts from the dual perspective of what it means for us to gather as Church,
the one body of Christ, and the issue of the quality of
our worship in terms of full, robust attendance and
participation and how that deepens your faith. I merely
ask that you consider these musings as food for
thought; you might even consider talking them over
with a friend or a discussion group!
In conclusion…
Together, let’s aim high in Christ. Together, let’s
bring out the best in each other. Together, let’s be the
best we can be in Christ.
And let’s always remember: LOVE IS A GIFT.
Sincerely,
REMINDER REGARDING THE COMMUNION FAST
Please remember that we are supposed to observe a Communion Fast before receiving Holy Communion. This means we do not eat any foods or drink any liquids for one
hour before receiving Holy Communion, the only exception being water or medicine.
This also means that we are not to chew gum during Mass, and certainly not while we
are coming forward to receive Holy Communion. Let’s be sure we are appropriately prepared to receive Holy Communion by observing this important rule of the Church.

Re-Introducing the...
Saint Bernard League
(Saint Bernards are known for bringing people to safety in hazardous weather conditions!)
We need Saint Bernards!
Can you and/or your family shovel, snow blow or clear out another family or two in
need within our parish community? A number of our “St. Bernard’s” from last year
have moved on to college.
We’d love to have all families matched up before the first snow of the season. If you
can help with this, call the Parish Office at 631.226.7725 and leave a message for the
Consi Family. This is a great way to help those in need (do some tremendous community service!) We need approximately 8 more families to come forward as St. Bernard’s!
If you were a Saint Bernard last year, there is good news….
YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN UP AGAIN!
VAN MINISTRY
Recently, nearly 20 members of our parish community came together for the
first meeting of our Van Ministry. Plans are already underway to bring
God’s love and mercy (and some food and clothing necessities) to the poor
and homeless in our community.
So far we have spoken with the offerers from St. Vincent de Paul, the local COPE unit and local EMT
units. Our tentative plan is to go out one night per week to five to six stops in the local area where homeless are known to gather.
There, we will meet them, offer them basic supplies (food, hot coffee, limited winter clothing) and share
some spiritual and practical resources with them.
What can you do?
 We are in need of gently used, clean winter clothing (jackets, hats, gloves, scarves, etc.). YOU MUST
ARRANGE A TIME TO DROP OFF ANY DONATIONS. NO DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED
OTHERWISE.
 Do you work for a local restaurant or have a “connection” to a local restaurant that might help to
support our ministry once a month?
 Do you have a connection to a commercial stove/oven? (We know it sounds “out there,” but we figured we’d ask!
If you can help with any of the above, please contact Fr. John at [email protected] to be connected with the appropriate member of the community. Follow the bulletin for more info.

WRAPPING UP LAST WEEK
Yesterday, Saturday, November 15, Msgr. Joe presented to our Level 3 parents about the
importance of Church and particularly our participation in the Body of Christ during the
celebration of Sunday eucharist. The parents reflected on questions about their own experiences of church as well as their future hope for the church. While the parents were in
the Auditorium the students were learning about how the church continues to teach Jesus’
message. Following the presentation, parents and students work with their child’s catechist on a follow-up activity.
On Wednesday, November 12, our special Penance and Communion class began. This
class is offered to students who have enrolled after the sacramental years. Here they receive appropriate formation in preparation to receive the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist. Monica Lynch, a parent and catechist, will be teaching the enrolled students.

PRAYER AND WORSHIP
A WORD ABOUT LITURGICAL PRACTICES AND GOOD HEALTH
As we brace ourselves for the onset of another cold and flu season that accompanies the winter weather,
it’s a good time to review some common-sense liturgical practices and issues, to help everyone stay healthy and
to care for one another as we gather each week for Mass.
Holy Communion: Priests, deacons and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are especially encouraged
to wash and sanitize their hands before Mass begins. If Communion ministers need to clean their hands during Mass, it must be done discreetly. The best way for extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to clean
their hands during Mass is to use a sanitizing liquid in the pew before coming into the sanctuary (sanitizing
liquids have no place on the altar or among the Communion vessels and other sacred items on the credence
table).
Communion from the Chalice: The faithful should refrain from drinking from the chalice when one has a cold
or is fearful of being infected.
Receiving on the Tongue: Faithful who normally receive Holy Communion on the tongue should refrain from
receiving on the tongue and instead receive in the hand when one has a cold or is otherwise contagious. Do
not spread your saliva to the hand of the Communion minister if you are sick; receive Communion in the
hand instead.
Greeting of Peace: Use your own discretion and best judgment when invited to exchange the greeting of peace
during the liturgy; limit physical contact with others if necessary. If a handshake is not advisable, a simple
bow of the head is acceptable. Do not be insulted if someone prefers to avoid shaking your hand.
Mass Attendance: MOST IMPORTANTLY, IF YOU ARE SICK, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO MASS!
There is no obligation to attend Mass if you are sick; it is not a sin to miss Mass for this reason. (Also, there is
no need to go to Confession if you miss Mass because you are sick.) Personal prayer and reflection on the
Sunday Scripture readings is encouraged; many people also enjoy viewing the Mass on television.

Segunda Lectura (1 Corintios 15, 20-26.28): Cristo Debe Reinar.
Cristo, nuestro Pastor y Rey.

PREPARING FOR
Sunday, November 23, 2014
Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ the King of the Universe
And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did
for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ - Matthew 25:40
Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17
Ezekiel 34 uses the metaphor of shepherding to illustrate how Israel's leaders (shepherds) oppressed the people (flock) within God's kingdom. The
shepherds looked only to their own interests by clothing and feeding themselves at the expense of the needs of the flock. Thus God promises to save
the sheep from the "mouths" of the shepherds (Israel's rulers), search and
care for his sheep, and bring them back from where they were scattered.
Ultimately, God will judge between the fat sheep (beneficiaries and participants in the oppression) and the lean sheep (the weak and oppressed). This
deliverance climaxes with the future appointment of the ultimate shepherd, a second David, who will feed and care for God's flock as a prince
should under God's kingship.
1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28
Some of the Corinthians denied the bodily resurrection of the dead, considering resurrection to be a purely spiritual experience already achieved in
baptism and in the forgiveness of sins. Paul affirms both the essential materiality of the resurrection, and that Christ’s resurrection is not an end in
itself; its finality lies in the whole harvest, that is, ourselves.
Matthew 25:31-46
The three parables that precede this passage all stress waiting for and preparing (or not) for the return of Christ. This parable takes listeners forward
to the moment the Son of Man comes in glory (v. 31). The nations are assembled and the sheep are separated from the goats (vv. 32-33). This parable is similar to the Rich Man and Lazarus in that the time to repent and
be converted, the time to care for the poor on one's doorstep, is past. Judgment has arrived.

Gospel Reflection
Questions….
After reading next Sunday’s Gospel
(Matthew 25:31-46) take some time
to pray on it before you come to
Mass. Use the questions below to
aid your reflection.
1. This king is the almighty
and glorious God. Why did he
come into the world in solidarity with the poor, wear thorns
for his crown, and have a cross
for his throne? Who can relate
on a personal level to a very
rich, brilliant leader? Who can
relate to a poor and suffering
one?
2. “For I was hungry and you
gave me food, I was thirsty
and
you
gave
me
drink.” Christ uses our generosity as a criterion for salvation. How is it also a criterion
for happiness? What happens
to you when you give? The
“sheep” didn’t recognize or
accept the message or the messenger (Jesus), but they gave
anyway. If the “goats” had
recognized Jesus, they would
have given too. How important is it to give without
calculation?

SUPPORT OUR BULLETIN ADVERTISERS!
Did you know that the OLPH bulletin is printed
free of charge each week? Not only that, our parish receives a part of the advertising commission.
So please frequent the fine establishments that
advertise in our bulletin!

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the
Catholic Campaign for Human Development which
includes Home Missions (CCHD). CCHD was
founded 40 years ago by the bishops of the United
States when they realized that the lives of those in
need would not improve until the systems and policies that keep people in poverty were changed. For
40 years, CCHD has funded community groups that
seek justice and create lasting change. Fight poverty
in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the
CCHD Collection.

If your business could use a shot in the arm, consider advertising in the bulletin. Each week, nearly two thousand people attend Mass at OLPH,
most of whom live and shop in the Lindenhurst
area, receive or view our bulletin online. It’s an
easy way to reach thousands of area families with
information about your business.
For more information on how to advertise in our bulletin, call The Church Bulletin Company at
631.249.4994.

OLPH YOUTH MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
Remembering our past…
This Tuesday, Veteran’s Day, members of our Youth Service Corps and their families came together to
do a little “Fall Clean Up” at the OLPH cemetery on 8th Street in Lindenhurst. Here they learned about
the history of the cemetery and the parish and provided great assistance in getting things prepared for the
Winter.
...Working Towards the Future
This past Fall, our CYO track program, under the leadership of Mr. Joe Artusa, coordinated a special
track meet benefitting The Christina Renna Foundation. Last week, CYO President Dave Reid received
the following letter of gratitude from the foundation.
Dave, Joe, CYO athletes and parents:
There are no words to express our thanks for hosting a meet in memory of
Christina but also for helping us promote Children’s Cancer Awareness
Month.
Awareness is part of our mission—each year we are
reaching more people because of groups like CYO. Your
support and donation are most appreciated. One day
Christina’s dream will be a reality.
God bless,
Phil, Rene and Family.
