Suzie Schweitzer [email protected] Sacred Heart Cross Country Competes in USATF Championship Meet This past weekend 7 members of the girls cross country team traveled to Western Oregon University to compete in the USATF Oregon Association Championship Meet. The girls competed against runners from all over the state of Oregon. After extending their season and practicing for two additional weeks, the girls were ready to go! For the first time this season, the girls ran in separate races, determined by age. In the first race, girls 9-10, Sacr ed Hear t was represented by Kaylee Parent, Katie Erno, and Evalina Kruger. Kaylee Parent led the gir ls placing 18th out of 31 and r unning a personal best time of the season, in spite of a long course!!! Evalina and Katie finished 22nd and 24th respectively with times near their personal best. Taking the extras distance of the course into consideration, both girl ran personal bests times of the season. Emma Schmerbach, Riley Fox and Audrey Mills r epr esented Sacred Heart in the second race, girls 11-12. Once again Emma Schmerbach led the team with an outstanding race. Pushed from the very start, Emma battled the course with another runner, running neck and neck the entire race. The two girls raced side by side coming into the homestretch, with Emma only being overtaken in the final meters of the race to finish in second place by only one second. It was a thr illing r ace to watch and the fatigue in both girls was very evident. In the same race, Riley Fox also ran strong finishing 26th out of 50 in a time of 13:59, a per sonal best when taking the longer distance into consideration, while Audrey Mills ran a hard race finishing in 17:30. In the third race of the day, lone runner Sierra-Nicole Grunwald represented Sacred Heart in the 13-14 girls race. Due to the age of the runners the length of the course was lengthened from 3000 meters to 4000 meters. Running in her first 4000 meter race Sierra competed the course in 22:28. All seven girls did a tremendous job representing the spirit of Scared Heart and Cross Country. They made their coach (me!) very proud!!! Vicki Boyer Fourth Grade Tour 4th grade took the Harry & David factory tour this week as part of a study of Oregon products and economy. The class saw Moose Munch, truffles, and many bakery items being produced. The gift tower and basket packing was very fascinating, especially to see just how fast some of the packers are! The students also watched pears, an important Rogue Valley crop, being sorted, wrapped and packed into boxes. IMMUNIZATIONS All students in 7th grade are required to have a TDap immunization. All kindergarten students need to have a 5th Dtap, 4th Polio, & 2nd MMR immunization. If children are not correctly immunized by Feb 18, they will not be allowed in school until correctly immunized. This is mandated by the Jackson County Health Dept. SCRIP 38 days til Christmas!!
