HEARD IT
ON THE RIVER
by Rudi Schiffer
When times are tough, the smart get going. That’s what I see
happening in Tunica these days. The casino community in Tunica
has put a lot of its advertising bucks in one basket and now you see
TV commercials that promote the entire jurisdiction. There is a lot
of competition in Memphis but when you look realistically at what
our nine casinos in Northern Mississippi have to offer overall, no
contest. Top flight entertainment, dozens of first class restaurants
and buffets, cheap rooms and of course, gambling at its best.
Speaking of cooperation, it’s a rare day when competing casinos
get together and promote a tournament that slot players will love
and which will induce those players to visit casinos that they may
not have otherwise.
One might think that RESORTS, HOLLYWOOD and SAM’S
TOWN usually eye each other at the end of Casino Strip with wariness, being competitors. But this month they have joined hands
across the road to stage the $100,000 Invitational & Buy-In slot
tournament. Good move!
While previously qualified players will be invited, other players
who like the action can buy in for $200. The rules vary somewhat
from casino to casino. Best to check with each casino when registering. Hollywood has early registration on Thursday, Nov. 27 from
6-10 p.m. and you can sign up at Sam’s Town on Saturday Nov.
29. Resorts hosts the award announcement on Saturday Nov. 29 at
about 9 p.m. When you register you will be assigned rounds at each
of the three casinos - sounds fun. The award ceremony will be at
Resorts on Nov. 29. First place pays $10,000 cash and $15,000 in
free slot play. Prize money will be awarded all the way down to the
150th place. As this event proves itself, look for more co-op efforts
by rival casinos. See the story on the front page for more details.
SOUTHLAND PARK GAMING & RACING opened its new
expanded gaming area to the public last weekend, bringing in the
TV news stations to see the new and improved facilities. Work is
continuing on the SAMMY HAGAR’S Red Rocker Bar & Grill and
on the exterior and parking lot. See the story on the opposite page.
TROY KEEPING, Southland’s president and GM, said they’ve
added 150 employees in the past month to handle all the new biz
that will be coming Southland’s way. The 41,000-suare-foot addition
is yet another Southland transformation. This facility keeps growing
and growing. We will keep you updated on the progress and look
forward to bringing details of the official grand opening ceremony.
FITZ CASINO & HOTEL has some attractive events this
month. On Nov. 22 there is a great free pay-per-view fight on all TV
monitors there with the World Welterweight Championship on the
line between Pacquiao and Algieri. And don’t forget the Temptations Review Dec. 6.
BALLY’S CASINO is for the birds on Mondays this month with
a free turkey giveaway based on earned points and the Turkey Draw
takes place on Tuesdays for a shot at $500 in Free Play or cash. The
Thanksgiving Day Buffet is only $17.99 at Katt’s Kitchen from 11
a.m. to 11 p.m.
At Southland Park, the spotlight is on ducks, not turkey. You can
win a Ford F-350 on Saturdays by picking a duck. Guess how many
ducks are on display and you can also win $2,500 in cash.
SAM’S TOWN HOTEL & GAMBLING HALL hosts the ReGift-A-Thon on Saturdays in November with drawings at 7, 9 and
11 p.m. for a new TV, laptop, tablet or other great prizes you can
re-gift to someone for the holidays.
A new blues museum will open in Tunica this January as a part of
an expanded GATEWAY TO THE BLUES VISITOR CENTER
& MUSEUM. The 3,500 square foot museum will feature the
following galleries: What Is Blues Music, Why Here? (Mississippi
Delta), Evolution of Style and Form, Mississippi Bluesmen,
Evolution of the Guitar and the Blues Lyric Interactive.
Highlights of the museum will include videos from local historian
Willy Beardon and blues artists Preston Shannon and Eden Brent.
Visitors will also be able to produce their very own blues song.

WEST MEMPHIS — Southland Park Gaming & Racing opened
its expanded gaming area last weekend just nine months removed from
the official groundbreaking ceremony for the $37.4 million expansion.
Work continues on the exterior of the gaming center, which
is being “reskinned” so that both it and the addition appear as one
seemless complex. Final touches are also being put on Sammy Hagar’s
Red Rocker Bar & Grill, which is expected to be open later this month.
The key component of the expansion project is the 41,000-squarefoot building addition that opened last Friday and can house up to 500
new gaming machines. The Sammy Hagar’s Red Rocker will be a 150seat themed restaurant and sports bar.
Troy Keeping, Southland president and general manager,
said Southland has added 650 new slots in the last six months in
preparation for the opening and with the new gaming machines come
new employees. “We’ve added 150 people in the last 30 days, bringing
our number of employees from 650 to 799,” he said. “It (the project)
has been remarkably smooth. Most of our leadership team has been
through this... We’re thrilled to be opening earlier than anticipated.”
Keeping said Southland has conducted weekly expansion meetings
throughout the process, working with Crossland Construction and
suppliers to move the project forward.
Jim Wilson, director of gaming operations at Southland, said 13
gaming machine manufacturers’ products are on the floor with such
popular titles as Moby Dick, Wicked Winnings II, $10 Wheel of
Fortune and a variety of new Bally games.
Keeping said customer input has been important to the expansion
with a key objective in mind — bringing more fun to market.

New museum addition progressing nicely
at the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center
TUNICA RESORTS — A new blues museum will open this
January as a part of an expanded Gateway to the Blues Vistor Center,
when the center officially becomes the Gateway to the Blues Visitor
Center & Museum, according to tunicatravel.com.
The visitor center is located alongside blues highway 61 in Tunica
Resorts. Just 20 miles from Memphis’s Beale Street and Elvis’
Graceland, the expanded vistors center and museum will serve as a
great stop for tourists and music lovers searching for that authentic
blues experience.
The 3,500 square foot museum will feature the following galleries:
What Is Blues Music
Why Here? (Mississippi Delta)
Evolution of Style and Form
Mississippi Bluesmen
Evolution of the Guitar
Blues Lyric Interactive
Highlights of the museum will include videos from local historian
Willy Beardon and blues artists Preston Shannon and Eden Brent.
Visitors will end their journey with local bluesman Memphis Jones in
the Blues Lyric Interactive where he will assist you in the production
of your very own blues song.
Once recorded, the Gateway to the Blues Museum staff will
email each visitor a copy of their song as a memento of their visit to
Tunica and the Mississippi Delta.
The name “Gateway” was given to this project because the
Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center is truly the gateway to the
larger blues and music product that can be found throughout the
Mississippi Delta.
Whether traveling the Blues Trail, visiting one of the many blues
attractions in Clarksdale or attending an event at the BB King Blues
Museum in Indianola, the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center and
Museum will serve as the perfect first stop and educate all on why
this original music art form originated and flourished from this
unique landscape.
The blues, born among the hot, humid and dusty Mississippi
Delta fields makes this marketing tagline about as true and original
as any that you will ever hear or read.
Arguably Mississippi’s greatest export; blues music has been
experienced across the airwaves on radios and televisions the worldover. Today however, millions of people from around the globe are
taking the 18th century poet John Keats’ words to heart and visiting
Mississippi where this truest form of experiential music was born.
The Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center and Museum will
become real with visitors from around the world being able to
experience this one of a kind music attraction in 2015. Follow us on
twitter @TunicaBlues and check in with www.tunicatravel.com for

Gold Strike continues monthly culinary series
Fall Harvest at Buffet Americana in November
TUNICA RESORTS — Gold Strike Casino
Resort hosts a monthly culinary series at its Buffet
Americana. The buffet features specialty-themed
cuisine throughout each month and for holidays, in
addition to its regular menu options.
November’s theme is Fall Harvest. The Fall
Harvest menu includes roast chicken with bourbon,
peaches and herbs, baked pork chops with apples
chutney, blistered garden vegetables with almonds,
maple roasted chicken thighs with sweet potatoes,
butter basted spiced tilapia with polenta, harvest
salad and pumpkin pies.
Buffet Americana is the culmination of a multiyear, multimillion-dollar property transformation
and has raised the culinary bar in Tunica with fresh
gourmet selections, interactive food stations and
an intriguing design concept. The 13,500-squarefoot restaurant emphasizes fresh, made-to-order meals at stations
designed to recreate the feeling of an upscale specialty food market.
Many stations – including those offering pasta, omelets, wood-fired
pizza and a customized Mongolian grill, to name just a few – will
allow diners to design their own dishes while chefs prepare them
fresh on the spot. Buffet Americana has introduced a contemporary
cooking concept to the Mid-South with delicious kabobs, tikka
skewers and freshly baked Indian breads prepared in
the only tandoori oven found in Mississippi. Other
stations offer traditional Southern cooking favorites
and seafood selections while highlighting ingredients
from local farms and suppliers. Seafood lovers can
enjoy all-you-can-eat snow crabs every Friday and
Saturday nights for $26.99. The seafood buffet
spotlights a variety of seafood dishes such as peeland-eat shrimp, fried shrimp, potato-crusted salmon,
blackened tilapia with cheddar cheese grits, seafoodstuffed eggplant, Moroccan fish tagine, Jonah
crab claws, oysters, sushi and much more. Buffet
Americana guests can also enjoy complimentary
beer and wine every Friday, Saturday and Sunday
night – the area’s only restaurant offering of its kind.
Buffet Americana is open for breakfast, lunch
and dinner. Hours of operation are Monday through
Thursday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 9:30 p.m.; Friday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tipping
Guidelines
When you receive good service at a casino, it
is customary to award the person giving the
good service a gratuity (tip). Jackpot! readers
ask us occassionally what the appropriate
tip to leave might be for quality service for
different casino employees. Obviously, many
things factor into this, so please note that the
information below is just a guideline, and
impeccable service would receive a higher tip.

HOROSCOPE
Your concerns are coming to the forefront, Scorpio
Editor’s Note: These horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes
only and are for the time period November 13 - November 26, 2014.
3CORPIO /CT .OV — Your
concerns come to the forefront. Others have
noticed your existence again and it will be
far harder to keep your concerns secret and not to
acknowledge the import of anxieties. You’ve found
it tough to open up but it is best to share concerns.
3AGITTARIUS .OV $EC — There
are definitely two sides to your character and
you can give free rein to both of them. From
Nov. 16 on you will have plenty of opportunity for
fun and frolics. But prior to this you’ll be working
against the celestial tide to push yourself forward.
#APRICORN $EC *AN — This
period heralds change and transformation
and will continue for some time, promising
the breakdown of existing structures and causing
you to question all you previously assumed to be
true. This does not happen easily, since you must
first access and then examine hidden conditioning,
buried deep down within your psyche. What emerges
is ultimately better.
!QUARIUS*AN&EB— Although
you have occasionally doubted the wisdom
of the course you’ve chosen, this period will
dispel a number of the doubts you’ve encountered.
It seems others have noticed your efforts after all
and while their approval was never something you
sought, it is encouraging to have feedback.
0ISCES&EB-ARCH — When you’re
busy, have a goal in mind and the bit between
your teeth, it is possible to lose sight of other
issues in your eagerness to tackle the task in hand.
But be careful you don’t give anyone the message,
that you are not concerned about their opinion and
will ride roughshod over their needs and sensibilities.
!RIES -ARCH !PRIL — You are
drawn to consider where you stand with
others. Although you are independent and
individualistic, under ideal circumstances you are not
a loner. You believe the world would be a poorer
place without certain folk around you.
THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN ‡ www.jackpotmagazine.com
4AURUS !PRIL -AY — Recently,
you have been far distant from the cosmic
spotlight. This has its benefits and has not
bothered you excessively, since there are advantages
to being able to pursue your own concerns in privacy.
You are growing and developing on spiritual level.
'EMINI -AY *UNE — Assorted
obligations and your working life feature
during this period. This leaves you little scope
for relaxation and causes you to wonder, what this is
all about sometimes. Your growing list of activities is
the primary reason for such frenetic pace.
#ANCER *UNE *ULY — During this
period you notice looser liaisons are more
enjoyable than the sense of being tied to
anyone, with commitment as the No. 1 priority.
The institution of marriage and the first flushes of
romance are treated differently in astrological terms.
At certain junctures influences will impact one and
not the other, creating a complicated interplay.
,EO *ULY !UG — The focus on
your domestic affairs comes as no surprise,
since Saturn has emphasized this area for
almost two years. Looking back, the atmosphere in
your family and how you’re living now, are in contrast
to what you were facing then. Much has changed, as
Saturn pruned away what wasn’t working.
6IRGO!UG3EP— This time marks
a reflective period for you, no matter how
busy matters seem on the surface or look to
the casual observer. Stay true to yourself, since you
are your sternest critic.
,IBRA3EP/CT— Money is at the
forefront of your attention. And largely the
portents are excellent; although you’ve never
found economics the most fascinating subject and
are glad to let your attention lapse, once the initial
emphasis on such practicalities subsides. Examine
certain key issues and to find out what counts.
