ELECTIONS OVER
THE YEARS

In this National Election year our newspapers, radio, mail and
TV bring news of candidates - informative - speculative and
sometimes, borderline-libelous! By the time the November
Election Day arrives we are generally so confused and unbelieving that we enter our polling place feeling that we must vote
- but with few convictions. It was not always thus!
When the Town of East Lyme was formed on May 25,
1839 and our first Town Meeting and Election was called for
June 1, 1839 (within 10 days of the adoption of the Legislative
Charter creating the Town) I am sure it was with great
enthusiasm that people assembled. It was in the Baptist
Meetinghouse in Flanders on Meeting House Hill - now called
Niantic Hill (for what reason I do not know) that the Election
was held. In addition to 5 Selectmen, Town Clerk, Treasurer
and Tax Collector, Constables and Grad Jurors, there were
elected men to now-obsolete offices: Tithingmen - Hayward Sealer of Weights and Measures - Key Keepers.

Care & Share of East Lyme is hopeful that once again the generosity
of the community will fill its shelves and freezers with food and gift
items for their holiday gift store. Drop offs can be made every
Saturday from 11am to 1pm at the pantry at 12 Roxbury Road in
Niantic. Turkeys, stuffing mix and instant mashed potatoes as well
as canned fruits and vegetables are needed to fill the more than 100
food baskets that will be distributed to clients in East Lyme, Niantic
and Salem.
With Christmas right around the corner, the gift drive is in full
swing. Their holiday store gives Care & Share clients the ability to
‘shop’ for holiday gifts for family members. All items are given free
of charge. This year there is a special need for new toys, clothing
and toiletry items for children and teens. Event organizer Pam
Kisnneski and a host of volunteers will spend hours creating and
stocking the store ensuring everyone will receive a special gift.
Other upcoming Care and Share events include Angel Trees
located around town, school and organization food drives and our
annual fund appeal.
Care & Share is a 100% volunteer-run non-profit that operates
a year-round food pantry, provides emergency financial, housing
and energy assistance, to residents of East Lyme, Niantic and Salem
and emergency snacks and clothing to local schoolchildren. More
than 93% of the funds they raise go directly to assisting their clients. They are sustained by and for the community.
Donations of unexpired packaged food and household staples
such as detergent, paper towels and shampoo are accepted at the
pantry located at 12 Roxbury Road every Saturday from 11am-1pm.
Monetary or gift card donations made can be sent to P.O. Box 114,
East Lyme, CT 06333. Care & Share of East Lyme, Inc. is a 501(c) 3
and donations may be tax deductible.

AOH, Hanafin’s
Help Homeless Veterans
The New London Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in partnership with Hanafin's Pub will conduct a public campaign to assist
homeless veterans as they move into housing.
Beginning November 1 a bushel basket will be available each
month in Hanafin's Pub, on State Street, New London, opposite the
Garde Theater, for public donations of home goods, including:
household items, kitchen and bathroom cleaning products, kitchen
gadgets, clean bedding, clean dishes and utensils, etc..
Our veterans greatly appreciate these baskets as many are coming from shelters or transitional housing and have little to nothing
to set up a household. The goal is to donate a full bushel basket to
the local Veterans Administration each month. This project is expected to continue through 2015.
In 2012 this partnership organized a public appeal for winter
clothing to assist Hurricane Sandy victims in Breezy Point, NY, and
were overwhelmed by the public response. The New London Ancient Order of Hibernians and Hanafin's Pub hope to build upon
that success with this humanitarian effort to assist local veterans in
need.

instruction from his grandfather Henry Cooke White (1861-1952) and
father Nelson Cooke White (1900-1989), who were both prominent

in Old Lyme. The younger White (the presenter’s father) lived with
his parents at the Florence Griswold house, where he met some of

Set-Back/Pitch Tournament on Saturday, November 8th, at a private home in North Franklin, CT, to benefit the children of Nicaragua,
sponsored by the Friends of Kilambe, a local non-profit organization
dedicated to bringing medical help and clean water to impoverished
families in Nicaragua. The Card Tournament is the latest fund-raising
effort by the small, local group, who wanted to have a fun event to

“Full Speed into the Nuclear Age” Groton at Work 7 p.m. 11/10 at

a grant from Connecticut Humanities to record and tell the stories of
employees who were at Electric Boat as the Cold War escalated in

counter-narcotics missions, and commanded the Connecticut CAP.

a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii coastal patrol and
submarine searching became the prime missions of CAP. During
World War II, Connecticut Wing CAP was heavily involved in coastal
patrol and anti-submarine missions along its section of the Atlantic
coast. The CT. Wing’s 66-year history, also includes carrying out

Connecticut Lyric Opera Presents: Der Rosenkavalier - 7:30 p.m.
Friday, November 14 at Garde Arts Center, 325 State Street, New
London - The bittersweet comic opera by Strauss and librettist
Hugo von Hofmannsthal muses over the passing of time and love,
and contains some of the composer’s most lyrical and enchanting
music. An instant success at its premiere at Dresden in 1911, “Der
Rosenkavalier” (The Knight of the Rose) is set in mid-18th century
Vienna; the plot is a comic intrigue involving the aristocratic
Marschallin, her much younger lover Octavian, her vulgar cousin
Baron Ochs and his prospective fiancée Sophie. Over the course
of the opera, Marschallin is forced to confront and ultimately accept the laws of time, giving him up to a pretty young heiress.
Marschallin’s lover, Octavian, the “Knight of the Rose” of the title,
is sung by a woman—partly as an homage to Mozart’s Cherubino,
and partly as a nod to the power of illusion, an important theme in
the opera. Strauss’s frequent collaborator, Hugo von Hofmannsthal,
created a fascinating libretto that deftly combines comedy (of both
the sophisticated and the slapstick varieties), dreamy nostalgic
fantasy, genuine human drama, and light but striking touches of
philosophy and social commentary. Performed by the Connecticut
Lyric Opera, “Der Rosenkavalier” features Connecticut Virtuosi
Chamber Orchestra conducted by Adrian Sylveen, stage direction
by Christopher Browner, and lavish costumes and scenery. Tickets

During the following year - 1840 - a national census was
made and East Lyme had a count of 1,412 people.
We must realize this included women and children. The
figure for actual voters I have not found. However, we must
realize that at this time only duly-registeredMEN were permitted
to vote. No Absentee voting was permitted. It was not until 1864
that the Connecticut Constitution was amended to permit soldiers
engaged in the Civil War to vote by Absentee Ballot -- and it
should be noted that in that referendum East Lyme voted against
the Amendment!
It was the custom to hold Elections in the morning and Town
Meetings on the same day in the afternoon. This would have been
a practical accommodation for men to take care of both civic
duties on the same day for transportation from the far corners of
the Town was difficult because often-times very cold weather
and possibly snow occurred by October Town Elections and
definitely by November National Elections. As time passed,
Town Meetings were also scheduled in March - mud season!
Men were not anxious to leave their farm chores more often than
necessary.
The first Board of Registration (Selectmen and Town Clerk)
met on March 22, 1840 at the home of Elizabeth Caulkins
(presumably-Caulkins Tavern which stood on the Northeast
corner of Flanders Four Corners - the present site of McDonalds).
That meeting was adjourned to the Baptist Meetinghouse for a
session on April 2, 1840. The Meetinghouse Hill Church was
abandoned as the congregation increased and the present Flanders
Baptist and Community Church was built in 1844, whereupon the
Basement was officially designated as the Town Room.
After the advent of the Railroad along the shore in 1851,
population gradually moved to the Niantic area (then known as
"The Bank"). With that event, a 2nd Voting District was established and Luce Hall - later to be known as Odd Fellows Hall,
which today is the site of Citizens Bank on Pennsylvania Avenue,
was rented by the Town at the rate of $50 per year. By 1885
people voted to hold Town Meetings alternating between Flanders
and Niantic - to appease the intense rivalry between the two
villages. Finally with the opening of the East Lyme High School
in 1965 the large Auditorium became the designated arena for
such meetings.
Voting was by written ballot -- and sometimes, by prewritten ballots passed out to voters arriving at the polls. So much
for a secret ballot! Ballot boxes gave way to the Automatic Voting
Machine in our Town in 1924 when we rented them and finally
bought them a year later -- among the first towns in the State. By
1939 - just 100 years after the first vote - Flanders Polls moved
from the Church Basement to the Flanders School.
By 1893 women were finally recognized as worthy to make
decisions and were listed on separate Voting Lists, entitled to vote
on EDUCATIONAL MATTERS ONLY! It was not until the 19th
Amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1919 that
women were accorded the full vote. It is interesting to note that
in East Lyme, the next year a woman - Miss Effie Haynes- was
elected as an official - Registrar of Voters in the 2nd Voting

Connecticut Lyric Opera
celebrates 150th anniversary
of the birth of
Richard Strauss
with 'Der Rosenkavalier'
(New London) In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the
birth of Richard Strauss, Connecticut Lyric Opera and the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra present the Connecticut premiere of
"Der Rosenkavalier" at New London's Garde Arts Center, Friday,
November 14, at 7:30 p.m. The opera will be performed in German
with English supertitles.
The bittersweet comic opera by Strauss and librettist Hugo von
Hofmannsthal muses over the passing of time and love, and contains some of the composer’s most lyrical and enchanting music. An
instant success at its premiere at Dresden in 1911, "Der
Rosenkavalier" (The Knight of the Rose) is set in mid-18th century
Vienna; the plot is a comic intrigue involving the aristocratic
Marschallin, her much younger lover Octavian, her vulgar cousin
Baron Ochs and his prospective fiancée Sophie. Over the course of
the opera, Marschallin is forced to confront and ultimately accept
the laws of time, giving him up to a pretty young heiress.
Marschallin's lover, Octavian, the “Knight of the Rose” of the
title, is sung by a woman—partly as an homage to Mozart’s
Cherubino, and partly as a nod to the power of illusion, an important
theme in the opera. Strauss’s frequent collaborator, Hugo von
Hofmannsthal, created a fascinating libretto that deftly combines
comedy (of both the sophisticated and the slapstick varieties), dreamy
nostalgic fantasy, genuine human drama, and light but striking
touches of philosophy and social commentary.
Performed by the Connecticut Lyric Opera, "Der Rosenkavalier"
features Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra conducted by
Adrian Sylveen, stage direction by Christopher Browner, and lavish
costumes and scenery.
Tickets to "Der Rosenkavalier" are $32-$60 and are available at
the Garde Box Office, 325 State St., New London, Connecticut. The
Garde Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and two hours prior to performances and movies. Tickets may be
