Are you ready for the longest paddling event in the Southern Hemisphere?
We are very excited that once again the YMCA and a dedicated team of volunteers, who are the
backbone of the Massive Murray Paddle, are bringing you this iconic event for its 46th consecutive year
on the Murray River.
In many ways it’s the same iconic event it has been for the past 45 years, but given a new lease on life.
It’s great to see so many people who come year after year, and we’re proud to have you back again.
This year the event has a new name, new dates and plenty of new faces.
Our aim during the event is to help you paddle safely along the 404km of the river from Yarrawonga to
Swan Hill and to ensure you have everything you need to have a great time along the way.
WELCOME!
Although a challenging sporting event which encourages participation and fun, a main focus of the event
is to raise funds for the YMCA’s benevolent work building bright futures for young people.
On that note, we would like to say a big thanks to those who fundraised and especially to those in the
404 Club. Just remember, that whilst your pain on the river is temporary, your impact in the community
changes lives.
Another big thank you to all of our terrific partners including Mirage Sea Kayaks, The Right Merchandise,
Tourism Victoria, Moira Shire Council, Berrigan Shire Council, Shire of Campaspe, Gannawarra Shire,
Swan Hill City Council, Murray Regional Tourism Board, Mannagum Enterprises, Land Rovers Owners
Club of Victoria and WICEN (Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network) who all generously support the
event through sponsorship, partnerships and at event support.
We look forward to meeting you all on the banks of the Murray and sharing the feeling of finishing with
you in Swan Hill!
Make sure you, and your friends and family at home, stay afloat and connected throughout the event
with our daily communications, our social media and web updates.
May this be an unforgettable journey.
Best wishes,
4

The onus is on you to ensure that you arrive in time for your start with your boat
fully prepared (appropriate boat number holder with number attached, fixed positive
buoyancy, and life jackets on board or worn by juniors. Should you be unable to
start at your allocated time due to addressing any of these issues, time penalties will
apply.
FIVE DAY EVENT
Sunday 23 November, Yarrawonga Holiday Park – Yarrawonga (at the Start Line area for Day
1) between 2 – 5pm. To avoid queues, get there early.
At least one person from each team or boat will need to come and collect their race packs,
boat number and event briefing information. You will be verbally briefed when you check-in.
If you are unsure of the type of vessel you are competing in, or in what category you belong
to, Race Group will be available to scrutineer your craft but this is not mandatory. However, all
boats will be checked to see that they have their boat number attached with an appropriate
boat number holder, for positive craft buoyancy prior to entering the water on Day 1.
Please Note: After Day 1, you may not be able to change your class if you change your mind
– you can however change category if required e.g. from full distance to half distance.
THREE AND SINGLE DAY EVENTS
SCRUTINEERING
& EVENT CHECK-IN
For three and one day paddlers, you can have your boat scrutineered, if you would like to
clarify your craft and class, you can at the start line at 6am on the day you begin paddling, or
at the finish line of the day prior to you commencing.
All boats will need to collect their race packs and boat numbers and be checked for a boat
number holder and positive buoyancy prior to entering the water.
Refer to the course maps for approximate arrival times at finish lines throughout the event.
OFFICIAL BRIEFING
We’ll verbally brief whoever comes from your team to collect your race packs and boat
number. We brief participants with pertinent safety and event information to ensure your
Massive Murray Paddle experience is as safe and enjoyable as possible.
This is the last opportunity we have to advise you of any changes or variations to prepublished safety and event information that can sometimes occur at the very last minute.
10
We’ll also run frequent group briefing sessions for newbies or those wanting to hear a little
more every hour on the hour from 3pm-5pm on Sunday November 23 at event check-in in
Yarrawonga.

ay
doing in the lead up, or it could be the massive Murray
itself.
We know that the people that do this event are
prepared for the big things in life, but we want you
to prove it and brag about it to your mates. Show all
your friends and family at home what you’re doing and

how you’re doing something different whilst making a

to win $100 photo voucher for the official event

404 CLUB
The 404 Club isn’t just something that you’re born into, 404 club members are
made.
Are you strong enough to tough it out on the river AND help someone doing it
tough?
If you think you have what it takes to tackle the Southern Hemisphere’s longest
race - it’s not too late to make a difference off the water too.
To join the 404 Club all you need to do is raise $404 on top of your entry. The
funds raised go towards helping young people in communities throughout Victoria.
Want to know the best thing? For every $404 raised to your name is an entry into
the draw to win a Mirage 530 Kevlar, thanks to our sponsors Mirage Sea Kayaks.
The lucky and deserving winner will be announced at presentation night on Friday
28 November - so keep fundraising right up until then!
To set up your own fundraising page, sponsor a paddler, or make a donation, just
go to www.massivemurraypaddle.org.au/support to find out how.
Since 2009 over $300k has been raised and put back into local communities.
Thanks to last year’s event alone, Cobram Special School got to go on a snow
camp and Laundry Mates, a social enterprise Laundromat run by people with
disabilities in Echuca, was launched as a result of funds raised.
We know that you have what it takes. We know that your strength isn’t all upperbody. We know that when you see someone struggling, you’ll fight. We know that
you’ll get out there and raise that $404 and help deserving communities.

GOING SOLO
GOIN
Greg Edwards is taking on the Massive Murray Paddle
for the first time this year.
“I kayaked in high school but haven’t really since. I
started up again mostly to improve my fitness, as I live
near Lake Eildon I knew it had to be something to do
with the water.” Greg has been working up to paddling
consecutive 30km days in preparation for the 404km
race. He said, “It’s such an amazing way to move!”
“
Greg says it’s a win-win situation, “So people like me
can achieve massive goals like this paddle, and
the YMCA can raise much needed funding for their
community programs.”

Whether you are taking on the challenge
solo or as part of a team you can make a
difference in the lives of young Australians
by fundraising. Money raised goes towards
helping young people build bright futures
through providing community grants.

donate some money and give me your moral support to
help me make it to Swan Hill on Friday 28 of November.”

RIZZOLI VOLUNTEER
AWARD
In recognition of the vital contribution volunteers make, the Rizzoli Volunteer Award is
given to those who make the event happen.
YMCA Victoria would not operate in many areas without the dedication and skillset
volunteers bring. Without them, the Massive Murray Paddle would not be possible.
The award is named in honour of David and Wendell Rizzoli who’ve volunteered at over
80 Murray Marathons between them. They’re best known for working with the Race
Group Team, with David behind the microphone and Wendell with her 1870's musket at
the start and finish line each day.

Berrigan Shire Welcomes
the Massive Murray Paddlers
and their crews to Tocumwal
One in three women will experience some type of violence from a male during their life. When
we promote equality and respect we can prevent the violence before it occurs by changing
the attitudes and behaviours behind it. YMCA Victoria has been building our commitment
to gender equality through our Y Respect Gender Project. This project has worked to build
awareness of these issues, promote an equitable and respectful culture, and embed gender
equality principles in all our actions and policies.
So as you paddle today take a moment to remember White Ribbon Day is about more
than saying NO to violence – it’s also about saying YES to gender equality and respectful
relationships
Good luck on the rest of your journey!
