WVU Faces Boston College in Puerto Rico Tip-Off Semifinals
• This is WVU’s third appearance in Puerto Rico. The Mountaineers won the 1997 San Juan Shootout and finished
second in the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off. In 2010, WVU defeated Davidson and Vanderbilt before falling to Minnesota.
• With the 91-65 win over George Mason, WVU improved to 6-1 all-time in games played in Puerto Rico.
• West Virginia has a 232-157 record in tournament games, including a 109-69 mark during in-season tournaments.
• The Mountaineers last in-season tournament championship took place at the 2009 76 Classic in Anaheim, California.
• Bob Huggins, with 743 career wins, is in 16th place on the NCAA Division I all-time winningest coaches list. Huggins
became the 20th Division I head coach to win 700 career games. Huggins’ record now stands at 743-302 in his 33rd
season as a head coach. He needs three wins to tie Phog Allen for 15th place at 746 wins. Huggins is the
third-winningest active Division I coach behind Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim.
• Senior Gary Browne played in his 100th career game at WVU vs. George Mason in his hometown of San Juan.
• WVU has outrebounded its opponents through three games this year, 142-97 (75 to 17 in offensive rebounds).
• WVU has 38 steals in three games and has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 68 times this season. The
Mountaineers are averaging 27.3 points per game off turnovers this season.

• Staten’s 598 points scored were the 17th most all-time in a season by a WVU player. His 193 assists tied for the
second-most assists by a WVU player in a season.
• Devin Williams has opened the season with three double-doubles and now shows 11 for his career. He now shows 12
career double-figure rebounding performances.
• Williams’ eight double-doubles last season were the third most all-time by a WVU freshman.
• Williams’ eight double-doubles tied for the fifth most by a Big 12 player last season. He also tied for the most
double-doubles by a Big 12 Conference freshman with Kansas’ Joel Embiid.
• Williams had 238 rebounds last season, the fourth most all-time by a WVU freshman.
• Jonathan Holton posted his first WVU double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds vs. Lafayette.

Scouting Boston College

Series Record Against Boston College
• This will be the 17th meeting between West Virginia and Boston College.
• The last meeting took place in the 2005 Big East Championship quarterfinals. WVU knocked off top-seeded Boston
College, 78-72, in what was the Eagles’ last game in the Big East Conference.
• WVU and Boston College met 13 times as members of the Big East from 1995-2005. WVU was 5-8 during that time.
• The first meeting took place on Dec. 26, 1962, a 65-64 overtime win for WVU in the Holiday Festival in New York City.

• This is the 106th season and 112th year overall for West Virginia basketball, which began in 1903.
• The Mountaineers own a 1,654-1,040 all-time record in intercollegiate basketball competition, ranking the
Mountaineers 25th among all Division I schools.
• WVU has earned 25 NCAA berths and 16 NIT trips since 1941, and has finished in the Top 25 17 times, including an
amazing nine straight years from 1955-63.
• In the past 10 years, the Mountaineers reached the NIT First Round in 2014, NCAA Second Round in 2012, NCAA Third
Round in 2011, the NCAA Final Four in 2010, made the NCAA Tournament in 2009, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2008,
won the NIT in 2007, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2006 and made it to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2005.
• In 1958, the Mountaineers finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in both polls and in 1959, West Virginia, led by
All-America guard Jerry West, lost in the NCAA finals to California.
• West Virginia has had 10 first team All-Americans, headlined by West, who went on to become one of
basketball’s all-time greats with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.
• Most recently, Da’Sean Butler earned All-America first team honors in 2010 by John Wooden and Basketball Times and
Kevin Jones earned All-America first team honors in 2012 by John Wooden.

Recap
West Virginia shot just 16.7 percent in the first half, finished the
game shooting 26.1 percent overall and needed all 40 minutes to hold
off Monmouth, 64-54, during the season opener at the WVU Coliseum.
An announced crowd of 6,792 watched in disbelief as Monmouth
built a 37-23 lead with 16:39 remaining and the Hawks had a 13-point
advantage with 13:30 left when the Mountaineers finally started making
some shots and began chipping away at Monmouth’s lead.
A Jaysean Paige 3 got things going, Gary Browne added a big
steal and layup, an Elijah Macon tip-in got the deficit down to six and
eventually, two Juwan Staten free throws with 4:47 left gave the
Mountaineers back the lead, 49-48.
Two more Staten free throws made it 51-48 and then a Staten
jumper got the lead to five with 3:18 left. The margin swelled to seven
on a Devin Williams basket and another Williams bucket and free throw
with 39 seconds left got the lead to eight.
Staten led everyone with 20 points – 13 of those coming in the
second half – and Williams finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds
despite missing his first 11 shots and finishing the game 3 of 14 from the
floor.
WVU’s other starting big, Jonathan Holton, also struggled through
a 1-of-9 shooting performance and finished the game with just two
points.
Holton and Williams weren’t the only ones struggling to find their
shooting stroke: freshman Daxter Miles Jr. was 1 of 7 from the floor,
junior Jevon Carter was 0 for 5 and Browne finished 2 of 7.
Deon Jones led Monmouth with 14 points while Andrew Nicholas
came off the bench to score 10. The Hawks turned the ball over 24
times and finished the game shooting 44.7 percent.
The Mountaineers (1-0) were playing the game without Brandon
Watkins, who sat on the bench with an illness and BillyDee Williams,
who is sidelined indefinitely now after suffering a fracture to the orbital
bone of the right eye during practice on Nov. 13.

• WVU improved to 91-15 all-time in season openers, including a 97-9
record in home openers.
• The win was the 741st career win for Bob Huggins, moving him
into a tie for 16th place with John Chaney in all-time Division I wins.

Jonathan Holton scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and
Devin Williams contributed a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead
West Virginia to an 83-56 win over Lafayette at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia (2-0) didn’t shoot the ball particularly well again,
making 38.1 percent overall, but the Mountaineers dominated the
glass (50-31), pressured Lafayette and put up 35 more shots than the
Leopards.
“We made some plays today that we didn’t make in the first game,
obviously, or really the exhibition game,” said West Virginia coach Bob
Huggins. “We ran some guys down from behind. We got our hands on
some balls and we’ve got to do that. We only shoot 38 percent and
we’re missing so many easy shots around the goal.”
Jaysean Paige, who scored 16 points, really gave the Mountaineers
a big lift in the first half when his teammates were struggling to find
their shooting stroke. He banged in two 3s to give the Mountaineers a
six-point lead, and then later hit a driving layup to put them ahead by
nine with two minutes left in the first half.
West Virginia held Lafayette scoreless over the remaining 2:29 of
the first half to take a 15-point lead into the locker room.
Continuing pressure got the lead to 20, 53-33, and then to 26,
and the margin hovered around the 20-point for the remainder of the
game.
West Virginia forced Lafayette into 20 turnovers on 11 steals and
limited the Leopards to shooting just 30.8 percent from 3 (4 of 13).
Juwan Staten scored 10 points and handed out eight assists in 29
minutes of action.
Dan Trist led Lafayette (1-1) with 12 points.

Sophomore forward Devin Williams posted his third consecutive
double-double to lead the Mountaineers to a 91-65 victory over George
Mason on the first day of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Coliseo Roberto
Clemente.
Williams, along with junior forward Jonathan Holton, led the
Mountaineers with 16 points apiece. Williams grabbed a game-high 10
rebounds. Juwan Staten also reached double figures, finishing with 13
points.
The Mountaineers (3-0) continue to have success with their fullcourt pressure, recording 16 steals and turning George Mason (1-2) over
24 times. WVU recorded 31 points off turnovers and had 21 secondchance points by recording 19 offensive rebounds for the game.
“I thought we played very well for a stretch and got a big lead but
then we relaxed and didn’t play very well,” said coach Bob Huggins. “Our
press wasn’t very good. We started looking for shots and not looking
to score which is something you can do subconsciously when you get
a big lead which we did and from then on we didn’t play well. We just
gave them the basketball and turned them loose in the second half
which is not a good thing to do.”
West Virginia shot 44.4 percent from the field and 34.6 percent
(9 of 26) from 3-point range. Staten, Chase Connor and Gary Browne
each hit two 3’s for WVU. Browne, playing his first collegiate game in his
hometown of San Juan, finished with nine points, three assists and two
steals in his 100th game as a Mountaineer. Elijah Macon finished with
nine points for the Mountaineers.
WVU led 53-27 at halftime and its biggest lead was 31 points, 6534, with 14:16 remaining in the game.

• West Virginia was playing without Elijah Macon, who is back home
in Columbus dealing with family medical emergency, as well as
Brandon Watkins and BillyDee Williams, who both the opening
game as well.
• West Virginia had two players record double-doubles in the same
game for the first time since Nov. 15, 2011.

• West Virginia improved to 4-0 all-time against George Mason.
• This was the first meeting against George Mason as a member of
the Atlantic 10 Conference.
