Kenosis - Parish Financial Report
My dear sisters and brothers,
A BLESSED FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING!
Jesus, our King, came to serve and not to be served! This kind of kingship is in total contrast with
rulers who let their authority felt by others, manipulate, control, subjugate, use and destroy even
those under their reign out of pride and selfishness. By emptying Himself (kenosis), Jesus
destroyed sin and death that with Him, we may inherit the kingdom as heirs with Him, prepared
since the beginning of creation.
I gave you an example that you also may wash each other’s feet, as He tells us in John’s gospel.
The gospel we have this Sunday provides us with some concrete actions we can do in following the
model of serving others as Jesus wants us do. There are other ways to express in living out our
being stewards of God’s resources to build His kingdom in this world which in many respect is in a
big mess.
At the Diocesan level, our Bishop wants parishes to assist in drawing up the Pastoral Plan of the
Diocese. In our initial meeting for our parish pastoral planning held last November 8, we came up
with three priorities that we are proposing to Bishop Larry. These are Youth and Young Adult
Programs, Leadership Development of Clergy, Lay Staff and Volunteers and Faith Formation.
As regards our parish, we didn’t finish our discussions yet. Our excellent facilitator, Jim Walsh,
have provided us with the initial results of the workshops we had and our next meeting will be in
January next year. I am very excited to see the final result of our pastoral planning so that we can
set the direction of our parish for the next five years. I understand that ahead of us are big
challenges, but our Lord Jesus is much bigger than any issues and concerns we are faced with in
life and as a parish. We have to continue maximizing the resources He has given us because these
are meant to empower us to build His Kingdom of love, justice, truth and peace specifically in our
parish.
And talking of resources, not only human, but also financial resources, as stewards of our generous
Lord, you will find in our bulletin the financial report of our last year’s operation – fiscal year 2013
-2014. Be reminded that here in our Diocese, the fiscal year begins on July 1st ending June 30th of
the following year. It is a bit delayed and I apologized for it.
We are financially healthy last year with an increase in cash flow and savings. We have a net operating income of $107,755.00. Our loan payable to the Diocese is down to $490,699. Supplies and
other services went up due to office-wide computer upgrade, hosting of celebrations in the parish
to strengthen and deepen our being a Eucharistic family, switching to LED lights on campus,
beautification of the statue of Our Blessed Mother fronting the parish center, financial assistance to
our newly-formed Angel’s Youth Choir and other expenses. The facility repairs and maintenance
expense was down to postponement of scheduled repair projects because of delay in the arrival of
supplies and time needed in negotiating the contracts.
I want to express here my deepest appreciation for the continuing commitment and support you are
giving to our parish as stewards of God, as sisters and brothers of our Lord Jesus.
Praying for you always especially in the Eucharist and daily adoration.

From Mauka to Makai:
STEM Based Program Inspires
our Middle School Students
Inspiring students to explore the natural world
is central to the practice of middle school science
teacher Ms. Veresan. On Thursday, October 30,
students in grades 6-8 enjoyed a day of outdoor
science learning as the mauka component of a
program called From Mauka to Makai: Understanding
Climate Change Impacts in the Ahupua’a. Students
investigated forest ecology and conducted a field
study of Makiki Stream, assessing biodiversity and
environmental conditions. They also learned about the
concept of biomimicry by engineering solar ovens.
The STEM-based program, a unique partnership with the Hawaii Nature Center, will also include
a makai field study in February and original environmental service projects in the spring.
Fourth Grade Career Day
Our children are our future and Star of the Sea School is proud to
feature tomorrow’s pastors, doctors, astronauts, chefs, architects,
pilots and many more aspirations.
Career Day 2014 was hosted by our fourth grade students on
October 29. English teacher Mrs. Young guided her students as
they researched their careers of choice. From 8:00-11:00am, the
students informed their Star of the Sea Ohana (including parents
and grandparents) about their future careers. Guests were
educated with polished oral presentations, poster boards, power
points, artifacts, and interactive activities, which accompanied
each project. It was a great time for all! Most importantly, it was a
time for our fourth graders to dream about and envision their

among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it

out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy,

Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death
came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all
be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then
comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every
authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is
death. When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything
to him, so that God may be all in all.

FIRST READING: EZEKIEL 34:11-12, 15-17 –
Today’s reading follows the prophet’s stinging words of
indictment against the leaders of Israel who had failed in
their responsibility for God’s people. These leaders were
focused on their own political agenda and personal gain;
the Lord, in contrast, is a good shepherd.
SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:20-26,
28 – Paul presents a powerful picture of Christ as Lord.
Christ is presented as the ruler to who every other power
and authority must eventually give way.
GOSPEL: MATTHEW 25:31-46 – A description of
the last judgment where God’s people are judged
according to how well they followed Christ in
demonstrating compassion and love in their lives.
