We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of ones time, money, compassion, forgiveness, mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule. Enjoy the Liturgy Jesus said to His disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit upon His glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before Him...Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation.’” (Matthew 25:31-34) Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe – the last Sunday of the Church’s Liturgical Year. The Lord Jesus is our Shepherd; at the end, at His coming, He will hand over the kingdom to His Father. We have likened the Liturgical Year to a great symphony, even giving it a title: A Symphony of Love in C Major (C being Christ). Most of us have a favorite piece of music that we enjoy hearing over and over. It does not become monotonous in its repetition; rather we hear something a little different each time. What we hear depends on multiple factors: our mood as we listen, our environment, where we are at that particular time in life. Every day, as human beings, we change; therefore every time we listen to our great symphony, we will probably hear something just a bit different. Before major productions, a conductor will oftentimes present Program Notes on the upcoming performance. These notes may give background on the composer(s); point out certain passages to anticipate; perhaps identify a theme that threads throughout; a reprise of a passage with a variation on its presentation. Ideas to help us appreciate the music we are about to experience. We can find Program Notes for our Symphony of Love in C Major right within the symphony itself. We see an example of this today in the finale of our symphony. In the First Reading from the prophet Ezekiel, we hear that the Lord God is a shepherd who tends and cares for His flock, who will judge the sheep. This theme is echoed in the Gospel, where we learn that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, will separate the sheep from the goats. We are instructed to care for one another, to feed the hungry, etc. Then in the Liturgy of the Eucharist Jesus feeds us, who hunger, the Bread of Life. May you enjoy the beautiful liturgy that Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, has prepared for us. Father Storey Access Catholic Media on Your Computer AND Your Phone! At last, the people have peace and security. Second Reading, 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28, In the second reading, we hear Jesus has established His kingship by His death and resurrection. The word Eucharist means “thanksgiving.” What is the deeper meaning between receiving the Eucharist and offering thanksgiving to God? When we recall the Last Supper in the Gospel of Luke, we read that Jesus said, “I earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer…” Jesus then took the bread, and when He had given thanks He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My Body which is given for you.” And likewise the cup after supper, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:15, 19-20). Jesus “earnestly desires” to give Himself to us in the Eucharist, but not just in the Eucharist. Jesus gave thanks to His Father for the True Bread, His Body, that would be broken for us. He thanked the Father that He was able to offer Himself for our redemption! The Son of God, who has received all He is, gives thanks, by pouring Himself out in a return of Love. This great mystery leaves me a bit speechless. This makes me think of parents who spend themselves and pour themselves out for their children. Often the work of a parent is difficult and full of trials, but all the while your heart is grateful for the gift of children and for your ability to love them. Thinking of parents gives us just a small idea of the immensity of Jesus’ love for us. Many blessings this Thanksgiving on our Holy Spirit families!
