2 Deaths CROSBY-IRONTON COURIER Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 Charles Dufour dies in Crosby Charles “Chuck” Dufour, 83, Backus and formerly Hugo, died Nov. 11, in Crosby. He was born to Charles and Violet Dufour on Feb. 26, 1931, in St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his brother, Roland; and son-in-law, Jeff Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Donna; children: Deborah Dowdal (Jim), Linda Madison (John), Steve Dufour (Kim), SuZanne Gillespie (Wade), Charlie Dufour, Jr. (Sarah); 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Forest Lake. Sam Stirewalt services Friday Sammy Ray Stirewalt, 56, of Gilbert died Oct. 29 at St. Luke's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born on Jan. 11, 1958 to Clarence and Betty (Christianson) Stirewalt in Virginia. He grew up and attended school in the Crosby area. He worked as an over the road heavy equipment mechanic and as a logger for many years. Most recently he was employed by United Taconite since 2007. He married Lana Turner on Oct. 8, 1994 in Deerwood. He enjoyed working in the mines and the friendships he made with his co-workers. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. He loved his grandchildren dearly and looked forward to watching their faces light up at Christmastime. He was a man always willing to help those in need. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher and one brother, Steven. Survivors include his wife, Lana; daughter, Amanda Stirewalt of Baxter; stepdaughter, Brittany Turner of Virginia; six grandchildren; his parents: Clarence and Betty Stirewalt of Deerwood; three sisters: Debra (Mark) Soderman of Palo, Diane (Ken) Billick of Colorado and Rhonda (Wayne) Fuller of Indiana; two brothers: Jerry (Uli) Stirewalt of Brainerd, and Dan Stirewalt of Crosby; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at the United Methodist Church. Visitation from 1 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Pick up an extra pair of mittens (or hats, scarves and gloves) while shopping and bring the items to Neighborhood National Bank location before Dec. 19. All items received are taken to area schools and other places that will distribute the items to those in need. Tessa Olson dies, Rites for Alice services Friday Johnson held Barry Birkholz Tessa Laine Olson, 37, of St. Paul, died on Nov. 11 at Woodwinds Medical Center in Woodbury. She was born on May 11, 1977 in Minneapolis. She was an agent for American Accounts and Advisors in Cottage Grove for 13 years. She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Larrie Olson and an uncle, Lonnie Olson. She is survived by her fiancé, George Hatzistamoulos of St. Paul; her father, Kris Olson of Crosby; two sisters, Charla Olson of Minneapolis and Jenna Olson of Ironton; paternal grandmother, Alvina Olson of Crosby; an aunt, Charla Olson-Langworthy of Richfield; and cousins. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby. Visitation is Friday from noon until the service. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby. Barry A. Birkholz, 51, of Emily former of Winsted/ Lester Prairie area, died on Nov. 10 at his home. He was born on Feb. 12, 1963 in Glencoe to Arvin and Janelle (Perbix) Birkholz. He graduated from the Lester Prairie High School, Class of 1981. He was a carpenter for H.A. Birkholz Construction in Lester Prairie and Tutch Construction in Emily. He is preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jo; his mother, Janelle Birkholz of Winsted; and one sister, Tara Fay (Bruce) Schneewind of Lester Prairie. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Saturday. She was born on Sept. 22, 1918 in New Ulm to Herman and Clara (Schmidt) Battig. She married Paul Lowell Johnson on May 10, 1940 in Minneapolis. She was a director at Golden Valley Nursery School and owned and operated Alice's Antiques in Crosby for 24 years. She participated in many shows in the Twin Cities Area. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband Paul in 1985; one son, Thomas Johnson and a brother, Harold Battig. Survivors include two sons, Lowell (Barbara) Johnson of Buffalo and Kurt Johnson of Elk River; three daughters, Suzanne Johnson of San Francisco, CA, Teresa (Aram) Nazarian of San Francisco, CA and Kate (Mark) Helling of River Falls, WI and; one sister, Margaret Kolb of Elk River; eight grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. St Joseph’s Church will host Life Line Screening on Nov. 25. The site is located at 617 Poplar Street in Crosby. She married Robert Loehlein on May 13, 1946 in St. Cloud. She was a retired storekeeper with Precision Electric. They retired to the Cuyuna Range area in 1987. She is preceded in death by her parents and one son, Robert Loehlien Jr. who was killed in Vietnam in 1968. He graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1962. He married Florette in 1969 and received his degree in economics from Saint Cloud State University in 1972. He spent his career as a general manager for several Midwest lumber yards. Big John had the gift of seeing the extraordinary in everyday life. He adored his family. He astonished his doctors. He traveled the world. He was a loving husband, a great brother, an amazing father and a ridiculously proud grandpa.
