Newsletter
of the Embassy of Switzerland in Malaysia
November 2014
Foreword from Ambassador Dr Rolf Lenz
The Swiss Week this year was held again at the Shangri-La
Hotel with Chef Norbert Schwery from Switzerland. A specially
commissioned ‘cow’ from Switzerland had been painted by the
students from the Malaysian Institute of Art, was on display at
the foyer of the Lemon Garden Café and found good attention!
We also collaborated with The One Academy to showcase
pieces of art from very talented young students with the theme
– ‘Switzerland’s Travel System’ and later the pieces were
auctioned off.
The Swiss Week promotion continued at the Holiday Villa Hotel
& Suites with guest Chef Fredy Schneider from Hotel Holiday
Villa Arosa, Switzerland cooking up some Swiss specialities.
Ladies & Gentlemen
It is a great pleasure for me to write a few lines
for the last Newsletter of this year.
The
st
previous Newsletter was sent out on 31 March
st
2014 and for the 1 time, we will also be
sending this out to the CEOs of Swiss
companies.
Looking back, it seems like 2014 had just
started, and yet, here we are, almost at the end
of 2014 as we reflect on the previous months
activities.
Our Swiss National Day this year saw our
largest gathering of guests so far, consisting of
compatriots from the Swiss colony, fellow
embassies and many Malaysian friends! The
Ball Room of the Renaissance was beautifully
decorated in our national colours – red and
white and all the Canton flags. I am also proud
st
we could serve, for the 1 time, Swiss wine
during our celebration that was very well
received, if judging from the feedback.
The Embassy also hosted local students from the MARA Junior
Science College at the Embassy in August and also to provide
some material about Switzerland to them to be used during
their participation in a competition.
We also hosted the students from the St. Gallen Institute of
Management in Asia during their business study mission to
Malaysia in October recently. On another occasion, I and the
director of the University of St. Gallen in Singapore visited the
CEO of SME Corporation with the view of a possible study on
SMEs in the country.
Thanks to the Embassy’s Tourism representative, Switzerland
was prominently featured on Astro Channel 728 from July –
August with well-known TV host, Jason Godfrey. Amongst the
places featured were Zurich, Lucerne and Basel. I hope some
of you managed to catch the episodes.
I would also urge you, if you have not done so, to make a trip
up to Genting Highlands to catch the Magic act of the award
th
winning Swiss Peter Marvey before it ends on 24 November. I
th
had the honour of being invited to attend Mr Marvey’s 100
performance recently.
For movie buffs, do try to take in a movie or two during the
th
European Union Film Festival 2014 being held from 30
th
October – 17 December 2014 – details are listed in the
Newsletter.

The 2 round of EFTA–FTA talks held in early
September in Kuala Lumpur went very well with
the next round of discussions to be held in
Switzerland. Coinciding with the EFTA-FTA
discussions, preliminary talks on the Investment
Protection Agreement (IPA) at ‘Expert’ level
were held with the Ministry of International
Trade and Industry which might result in
negotiations of a modern IPA.
In the month of October, I welcomed special
guest Mr Andreas Gross, Swiss expert and
Parliamentarian. Mr Gross paid visits to the
Malaysian Parliament.
He had interesting
discussions with the President of the Senate as
well as the Speaker from the House of
Representatives and other Parliamentarians on
different aspects of Federalism.
He also
conducted a seminar in an event co-organised
by the Embassy and Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute
(ASLI).
On a sadder note, the Embassy was involved in the crisis
management during the recent airplane disasters of MH370
and MH17. Bern had to be informed if there were any Swiss
citizens aboard the ill-fated planes. In fact, there was a
Malaysian spouse of a Swiss national on board MH17 and
eventually the body was brought back to be buried in Malaysia
as per the family’s wishes.
A reminder to those who wish to get their documents in order to
remember to register yourselves for the Bio-metric exercise
th
th
scheduled in 19 & 20 November 2014 at this Embassy. The
consulate in Bangkok has contacted you as usual to set up
your appointment.
To all who are planning to go on holiday in the next few
months, I wish you happy holidays and safe journey.
Thank you.
Sincerely
Rolf Lenz

Life-size Cow Painting Project
In collaboration with the National Visual Art Gallery, we have appointed 7 students from the Malaysian Institute of Art
to turn a plain life-size cow into an art piece. The students had come up with the concept: ‘juxtaposition - Surreal
visuals filled the cow, with weird and funny characters that was mostly created from wild imagination of the artists.
The playful and sometimes quirky characters and patterns will indulge the audience in a pleasurable ambience.’ The
decorated cow has been displayed at the foyer of the Lemon Garden Café during the Swiss Culinary week and had
since been a centre of attraction for this promotion.

This event has been publicized through the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s
website, the Embassy’s website, E-blasts from the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur
well as from the Embassy, printed flyers and local media.
Through the joint marketing effort, the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur was pleased
with their sales results and will be looking into further collaboration for the next
coming project.
At the same time, it was an excellent opportunity to reach out and introduce
Switzerland to the Malaysian youth through the collaboration with the local colleges.

Synopsis
A comedy about age, youth and other eternities. On her 50th
birthday, of all things, Giulia has to experience firsthand that old
age renders you invisible. Retail therapy ostensibly helps, but
then she meets a stranger with whom she prefers to spend the
evening more than with her friends. They are waiting in a
restaurant reflecting energetically on the increasing number of
their annual growth rings. Jessica and Fatima are shopping
also, though admittedly in their own special way. Meanwhile, on
her 80th birthday, Léonie rebels against her daughter and old
age and gleefully sabotages her own birthday party.

News from the German Speaking Society Kuala Lumpur (GSSKL)
The Austrian-German-Swiss Charity Bazaar 2014 (AGS)
The Committee of the German Speaking
Society Kuala Lumpur is proud to announce
the main fundraising event of the year:
Our mission is to raise funds for our charity organisations that we
support throughout the year. Volunteers in our organisation visit
these organisations on a regular basis to ensure that funds are
appropriately distributed to those concerned. Our success is
mainly dependant on the generosity and co-operation of our
Sponsors who have always been most forthcoming in the support
of such a deserving cause.
We are inviting you to become a sponsor for this year’s Charity
Bazaar to be held on November 15th, 2014, from 11am to 3pm at
Carcosa Seri Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
Therefore, by becoming one of our Sponsors, you can help us
achieve this goal and make this year’s event a success. We
greatly appreciate any support you can offer. We need
contributions for the raffle like gift vouchers, hampers, donation or
contributions in cash. As we are a non-profitable organisation, 100%
of the proceeds will go to our charity organisations.
In return, your company’s name will appear on our website
www.gsskl.com and on Facebook. And as a sponsor, you will also
be mentioned in a review of the Bazaar in the KL-POST (the
magazine of the German Speaking Society of KL). By donating
MYR 5,000 and above, you will become a main sponsor of the
Bazaar and your company will be entitled to more exposure at the
day of the event.
As a tradition, the Ambassadors of Austria,
Germany and Switzerland will support the
Bazaar.
Please feel free to email us [email protected] if you have any
questions regarding this sponsorship opportunity.
