INSIDE THE MOONSHINE SHACK...
While I was DJ -ing at Americana this year Sam
Woodrow Moonshine photographer went around
and took loads of photo’s so we’ve gathered a
few together put them in a booklet and they are
now on line for you to look at or download, go to
www.mickmoonshine.co.uk
Well it’s time to chuck some logs on the fire, that
time of year when we only do a couple of gigs a
month cause of the weather and I’m mellowing
out it’s an age thing, I’m leaning more towards the
entertainment nights, more than disco, its more
laid back, you can dance, shoe shuffle, it’s foot
tappin hand clappin stuff, not everybody wants to
go to the pub at the weekend and have their ears
blown off or be, blinded by the light… ain’t that a
song… so we do laid back Rock n Roll, Blues,
Country and some Rock classics, it really is a trip
down memory lane, and I’ve had some brilliant
feedback and bookings for next year. So now it’s
CD time, lots to listen to.

Pistol Pete
Wearn takes a
wrong turning
from the lakes of
Louisiana, drifting
down the Trent,
finally taking
refuge at the
Barge Inn at Long
Eaton. Armed with
his allies in his
quest for the finest
bluesy sounds, in
the form of a
stomp box named
Duncan, a
harmonica, and a
homemade
acoustic guitar
thrown in. Usually Pete is accompanied by Ash Jones and
Mick Askey to form the trio .44 pistols, the band being
responsible for the album, live at the vaults featuring tracks
salvation, shake your money maker and born in the
borderlands. However on this occasion the jars of
Moonshine are flowing as Pete serenades a sedate
Sunday audience with an eclectic mix of original and
covers of classic and unknown blues songs. There's also a
twist which sees a few sixties rock and roll covers restyled
with a delta blues edge with white stripes track seven
nation army receiving the same treatment. The familiarity of
retro sixties songs spiced up and remixed worked a treat to
entice listeners to convert to a blues persuasion. Pistols'
expert musical skills meant he fluently negotiated from
acoustic guitar to harmonica while never missing a beat on
his stomp box. If you missed out fear not as his new four
track E.P glorious high fidelity is available for download on
band camp or keep an eye out for the next .44 pistols gig.
LULU DAVENPORT
John Illsley Band
The Flowerpot Saturday 27th
September 2014
This was indeed a rare treat, John Illsley one of
the founding members of one Britain’s best-loved
bands, Dire Straits playing The Flowerpot.
The show was split into two sets featuring a
mixture of John’s solo songs, in particular
showcasing tracks from his brilliant new album
Testing The Water and some of the best known
songs from the Dire Straits years.
Illsely’s superb band featured the fantastic Phil
Palmer on guitar, Phil actually played in the
touring band for the Dire Straits On Every Street
World Tour 1991-92.
The band took to the stage launching into a
stunning version of Walk Of Life and then
Expresso Love. John told stories in between
some of the songs and made a joke about the fact
that the long gap between solo albums was down
to him being a slow writer. Highlights from the first
set included a flawless Private Investigations, new
song Sometimes, So Far Away and ended with
the brilliant Sultans Of Swing.
The second set featured more tracks from the
new album including Darling Heart, Testing The
Water and the stunning Railway Tracks, a song
written while John was in hospital. These songs
illustrate just how good a songwriter John Illsley
is, interspersed with choice Dire Straits cuts as
Romeo and Juliet and Two Young Lovers.
The band then treated us to Calling Elvis, a very
powerful rendition of Brothers In Arms before
ending with a superb version of Money For
Nothing in which Phil Palmer really came into his
own as a great guitar player that he is and the
crowd were cheering and singing along.
John Illsley and company came back to the stage
and encored with The Bug, a great song to end a
really good gig on.
This is possibly one of the best gigs ever staged
at The Flowerpot and a rare treat to have such a
legendary musician from one of the UK’s bestloved bands playing this intimate venue. This was
one of those gigs that will be remembered by all
those present for many years to come.

LULU & MICK MOONSHINE @ THE BARGE
John Illsley Interview 2014
The legendary John Illsley from Dire Straits, and solo
artist having recorded the solo albums Never Told A
Soul (1984), Glass (1988) and Street’s Of Heaven (2010)
is back with a brand new album. Testing The Water
was recorded and released earlier this year and John is
out on tour in September and October to promote it.
The Derby Telegraph caught up with him ahead of his
headline show at The Flowerpot.
Why the long gap in between albums?
I’m a slow writer and I also like to paint and do
occasional exhibitions so I do albums when I’m ready.
What were the inspirations for the songs on Testing
The Water?
Mainly just reflections on what was going on in my life
and the things around me
On this tour you are playing a mix of solo songs and
Dire Straits hits, will these be as we remember them or
new interpretations?
I try and play the Dire Straits songs the way they were
made –not the same but a pretty good rendition I think.
Are you looking forward to going back out on the
road?
I’ll let you know when we are done! But yes I have a
great bunch of musicians , (I am) happy to say Phil
Palmer who played guitar on the last Dire Straits’ tour is
joining us.
Are we going to hear any new material from you, if so,
what can we expect?
You will hear songs from the new CD ‘Testing the Water”
and some Dire Straits classics Sultans=Brothers in arms –
Money for nothing= walk of life – Romeo and Juliet etc.
Is it true that the song Railway Tracks was written
while you were in hospital?
The new album, Testing The Water is out now and for
more information on John Illsley including tour dates
have a look at www.johnillsley.com.
It was written in hospital whilst having a stem cell
transplant for leukaemia.
Kevin White.
Do you have any particular favourite songs on the album
and which ones are they?
Not particularly they all have a different resonance for
each other but somehow hold together.
I also read your interview in the Daily Mail about your
cancer and recovery, a remarkable story. Did your
illness inspire any of the songs on the album?
Yes -"Railway tracks " and" When God made time "
It is good to see you back out on the road in support of
a great new album. When was the last time you
toured?
Quite a while ago, but this is only a few dates not that
long.
How does it feel playing pubs and theatres after
playing arenas and stadiums with Dire Straits? Do you
enjoy having closer contact with the audience?
I like the smaller venues –more intimate and less fuss.
Have you as a solo artist or a member of Dire Straits
experienced any Spinal Tap moments and would you
share these?
When the canopy above my head ripped in the middle of a
massive rain storm in Germany during Private
Investigations and I was nearly knocked off my feet by the
vast amounts of water.

SACKO'S SHIT
LIST
People say to me 'is there anything in
life you actually like?' and I have to
say yes, of course. Lots of things. I
can't thing of anything specific offhand
but I can be sure of one thingwhatever it is they'll stop making it,
close it down, turn it into something
different or fuck it up somehow.
They'll turn my local into a karaoke
bar, the chippy will become a kebab
house, they'll change the deal at a
rock venue to make it worse for you
and stop distributing rock mags
anywhere but Derby and so on.
Somehow it'll get bollocksed up by the
sort of wanker who wants you to join
in the fun, usually involving something
cuntish like pouring cold water over
yourself or wearing fancy dress.
What can you do? Not a lot sadly but
you can let the world know what
shithole full of shitheads it is. And on
that note...
People in the music scene who are
too fucking idle to advertise in this
mag.
Bands, venues, promoters...
Moonshine needs you to advertise.
You need Moonshine to advertise
you. You want people to know about
your gigs don't you? Well, don't you? I
assure you your talent alone is a thing
of total unconcern to the average rock
fan, you may be the best axeman
since Hendrix but if you don't
advertise nobody knows do they?
Just think. The world is full of people
frothing to read the latest shit list and
who knows, they may even give the
rest of the mag a cursory glance and
spot your ad. And there are millions
out there who read this just to find
fault and send me emails and letters
starting with 'for your information' and
'actually' and provide me with bog
paper and stuff to clean the guinea
pigs out, a whole readymade
audience of the sort of cunts you don't
really want in your shows but whose
money is as good as the next man's.
So what are you waiting for? Too
busy trimming up?
People who put Christmas
decorations up before Christmas.
Back in the days when we used to
string up murderers and the like (we
lived in a less violent society you
see), when the prisoner sat in the
condemned cell awaiting his new
choker chain, the guards attempted to
keep him jolly and not let him dwell on
his impending doom as far as that
was possible. They'd make light talk,
play cards and other games,
Scrabble, Monopoly, I Spy.....that kind
of thing.
They never, ever taunted the poor
soul with a game of fucking hangman
though did they? No, and why?
Because they had feelings and did not
want to rub in the ghastly end that
awaited the victim.
So why do people delight in taunting
the innocent victim with fucking
Christmas stuff in October? I have
seen houses trimmed up like bastard
Blackpool and it isn't even Bonfire
Night yet-though if I see too many it
will be, let me tell you. In the name of
humanity, isn't it bad enough that the
dread day awaits us in a few short
weeks? You don't have to torture us
beforehand, we know it's coming, we
know what horror we have to face,
demented women rampaging through
the land scavenging the shop shelves
cleaner than any vulture picked a
corpse, the dates, the tangerines, the
Advocaat, the awful scenes in the
pubs and the sheer unremitting
torment of the telly. Please, anything
but celebrity quizzes and the
Christmas Episode of the Vicar Of
Dibley...hang me now, I'll bring my
own rope.
Now normally I can't stand poetry but
I'll nick a bit of Coleridge here..
'Like one that on a lonesome road
doth walk in fear and dread,
Because he knows a frightful fiend
doth close behind him tread'.
That frightful fiend is Christmas and
it's devilish disciples are at fucking
work in a house near you. You know
and they know when Christmas is
really here-the Easter Eggs go on
sale.
Calls about the accident I had.
About three times a day I get a phone
call from a number I don't recognise.
So like the fool I am I answer it, it may
be a lesson or a gig offer. But no, it is
always some GIT who wants to talk
about the accident I had two years
and the three grand waiting for me.
The only accident I had was 25 years
ago, cost me a fortune, and if I had
only insured myself with a johhny I'd
have saved thousands. But for some
reason they don't want to talk about
that.
I haven't had an accident. Are you
sure, sir? Yes I am sure sir. I once
farted and followed through whilst on a
bus but otherwise I'm sure. The latter
was I thought, a suitable comment on
Trent Barton's services anyway. I
might do the same later today in fact.
And they do actually say that £3000 is
waitng for you. Don't they legally have
to pay up then? I might try that.
Then you get the automated 'listen to
this important message'. No YOU
listen to THIS important message.
Stop ringing me and fuck off. And
when you get there fuck off from there
too. Then keep fucking off till you are
out of fucking sight. Then fuck off
some more. Or you'll have an accident
all right.
Sex Surveys
As published in the tabloids from time
to time, usually when they've run out of
things to print about nonentity
celebrities, scares about food and
doleys. Ooooh the scandal, tut tut
tut.....Oooh the bullshit-and is
ANYONE shocked by this stuff these
days? God I could save them some
time, not in doing a survey because
they don't REALLY do them, someone
makes them up in the office when
bored, like horoscopes and the
problem page. No need to make
anything up, I'll tell it like it is, truthfully.
Our 'shocking' survey reveals that 57%
of men have fantasised about a
threesome. And 43% are lying
because there isn't a man alive who
hasn't fantasised about that. And there
are about three who have had a go.
Oh they'll tell you they have but trust
me, they're lying because there is no
topic on earth that people lie about
more than sex. All blokes multiply the
amount of women they've had by three
and all women divide it by three for a
start.
Our shocking survey reveals that 46%
of women have used a sex toy. Nope.
100%. If you think your missus hasn't
got one somewhere you fool only
yourself. What did you think that
buzzing in the bathroom was, the
immersion heater?
Our survey revealed that 42% of
women have had a one night stand.
They mean 100% and they just
misread the question as afternoons
don't count.
And the best one? The survey
revealed that every woman on our
street-bar one-has fucked the gas
man. I told the wife that and she said
'that'll be that stuck up cow at number
32'.
