Welcome
It may seem as if this year is going by so
quickly, but there is still so much to look
forward to in Medway during the autumn
and winter months.
A number of special events to mark
Remembrance Sunday will be held in
November, giving members of the community
the opportunity to pay tribute to those who
gave up so much and have fought for our
freedom over the years.
The Brook and Central Theatres host a great
line up including world famous comedian and
actor Omid Djalili, the Christmas pantomime
– Aladdin, and the Brook Christmas Show –
Poppy the Pirate and the Christmas Star.
There are also plenty of activities to choose
from at our libraries, from arts and crafts and
reading activities for children, to author talks
and writing workshops for adults.
Of course, these are just a few highlights
coming up over the next few months, so
please take some time to look through this
brochure and uncover the full range of events
that will be taking place on your doorstep over
the coming months.

Disquiet Beauty
Find out what exciting events and activities are going on at your library.
This exhibition brings together the work of four
artists who all explore notions of beauty and
alienation, attraction and repulsion and the
otherworldly in their use of materials and form.
The works of acclaimed artist Kate MccGwire
use the language of natural materials to
attract and repel in equal measure.
Her feathered sculptures have a constant
sense of otherness to them, at once seducing
and disturbing the viewer with their strange
familiarity. This abject beauty is integral
to MccGwire’s practice, where bodily forms
reference both the beauty of the natural
world and its darker undercurrents.
Medway based artist and milliner Zara
Carpenter will be showing her first major
sculptural work Persephone which explores
the acceptance of ones own mortality and
the ageing process and the desire to leave
something beautiful behind. The work uses
gathered and found objects including silk
flowers, birds wings and insects to investigate
themes of memento mori and metamorphosis.
Regular events for

Tessa Farmer creates intricate miniature
fairy sculptures made from insect carcasses,
plant roots and other found natural materials.
Microscopic battles between insects and tiny
winged skeletal humanoids are both sinister
and bewitching and offer a glimpse of an
apocalyptic microscopic underworld.

Kerry Howley is a contemporary jewellery
artist fascinated by the power materials have
to influence the wearer’s emotional response
and particularly how these can be conflicting.
She uses familiar forms yet works with
materials that both fascinate, attract and
repulse, turning discarded hair into exquisite
yet unsettling adornment.
Medway library card holders can borrow

Angel of Mons and Mata Hari to Russians in
London, the crucified Canadian and the

Andy Thomas: A celebratory
history of Christmas
In an uplifting presentation, Andy Thomas

Charles John Huffam Dickens brought into
the world a staggering array of wonderful
characters with orphans, starving children,
misers, murderers and abusive school teachers
among them. Largely self educated, Dickens
possessed the genius to become the greatest

countless short stories and articles. In his
lecture, entertainer Bertie Pearce looks at the
life and places of Dickens while interspersing
readings from his works.

Dr Ann Kneif: The history of
Kentish Seaside Resorts until
the First World War
The therapeutic value of seawater was
known in Tudor times and by the early years
of the 18th century the wealthy were drawn
to a few small towns, often fishing towns,
around the English coasts. It was not until
the Bank Holiday Act of 1871, which laid
down that certain days of the year should be
official holidays, that the seaside became
easily accessible to the working classes.
With the use of diaries, cartoons and books
from the times, the talk looks at all aspects
of this great British tradition.
