President’s Message
The “M” Word
in her life when affiliation with a congregation wouldn’t have
been interesting or meaningful.
By Jonathan Kass, Temple President
As I write this, fall is in the air (at least
what passes for fall here in Southern
California!), as the heat seemed to depart
in conjunction with the passing of 5774
into 5775 on the Jewish calendar.
Other words that came to mind immediately for some congregants
when I asked them how they would describe their relationship to
Temple Israel if they couldn’t use the word “member”: Community,
Evolving, Stakeholder, Lifelong & Lifetime, At home.
Since Yom Kippur, just a few weeks
ago, we’ve had a busy season as always
at the Temple – Sukkot, Simchat Torah,
multiple Shabbats, Torah Center in full
swing, a NFTY Fall Kallah, the rollout
of our JJL catalog, a movie screening of
“The Happiest Person In America”, and a community blessing
of the animals – just to name a few. As I said at Erev Rosh
HaShanah, “Who wouldn’t want to be a member here?”
New Member Recognition Shabbat
But does the word ‘member’ really describe what it means to be
part of the Temple Israel congregation? And what word could we
use instead?
During and after the High Holy Days, I’ve had the privilege of
getting feedback from many of you on those questions, posed on
Erev Rosh Hashannah. Here’s some of what I heard:
It has truly been a privilege to gather this feedback and hear these
stories – if you have a word you’d use to describe your relationship
with Temple Israel, I’d love to hear it. Feel free to drop me a line

Shabbat Service where we welcome
our Newest Members
yy Stories of long time congregant families, and what their
experience was when they first joined. For many, they shared
what it was like to come to the office, knowing they’d need to
explain to the Executive Director that they couldn’t pay the
dues they’d heard Temple Israel “requires.” The exec in each
story was a different person based on the family and when they
joined, but the story of these ‘members’ was remarkably similar
– they were told by the exec they were welcome, whatever they
could do as a family would be great. Hearing that was their
first real sense of how welcoming Temple Israel would be.
yy Stories from new congregants, some recently graduating or
still in Introduction to Judaism class with Rabbi Moskowitz.
One in particular shared that he had studied at another
congregation, but didn’t feel welcomed or connected. He’d
heard of us, decided to try us out, and immediately felt
welcomed by both Rabbi and our congregation, and knew he’d
found a spiritual home.
yy A young man, a student guest at our High Holy Days, spoke to
me of his appreciation for being able to join our congregation
for these services. He shared with me his own take on how
words and labels can create distance between people, rather
than bring them together.
yy A congregant shared that the words that came to mind were
“warm and welcoming” – and then she clarified that she is the
non-Jewish spouse in her family, and how much she appreciates
the feeling of being welcomed at Temple Israel.
yy A congregant who described her relationship to the Temple
as participatory and engaged, and contrasted that with a time

Executive Director’s Message
Welcoming the jewish new year by
teaching our children tzedakah
By Eric Shatzkin, Executive Director
I hope you all enjoyed the Jewish New
Year, whether you celebrated with family
out of the area or were able to join us at
our Temple services and activities. For
those of you who are not aware, Temple
Israel has a Rosh HaShanah tradition
of giving families with children (as well
as those who are children at heart) an
opportunity to enjoy celebrating the
Jewish New Year in a park setting,
instead of in formal services. This year’s
30th Annual Rosh HaShanah Family
Adventure in the Park was a wonderful success as we welcomed
more than 400 people of all ages to this family-friendly service.
This year’s event was co-chaired by Harvey Harmatz and Beth
Eiser Sterling, who added some fun new components to this year’s
service. We not only added much needed shade for our service
(thank you Mike Jackson, the Temple’s Head Custodian for his
work on this), we also added what we called a “Tzedakah Walk”
around the duck pond at El Dorado Park. This was not only
an opportunity used by the co-chairs to get me to dress up in a
giant apple costume, but during this short quarter mile walk, we
provided families with information about three worthy charities
and collected donations for these organizations. We decided to
have one charity for Israel, one charity to support a national Jewish
cause, and one local charity. The three organization supported
were: Jewish National Fund to allow them to plant trees in Israel,
MAZON, working to end hunger among people of all faiths and
backgrounds in the United States and Israel, and the Long Beach
Ronald McDonald House, which provides low-cost temporary
housing for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at
Miller Children’s Hospital and other nearby medical facilities. In
just a short fifteen minute walk we raised more than $150 for each
charity! What an amazing way to welcome the New Year while
instilling our values upon the next generation!
Temple Israel is a growing community, and I hope you will join us
on Friday, November 22nd as we recognize our newest members
at a Shabbat dinner and musical Got Shabbat Service. Help our
newest families feel welcome and expand your own circle of friends
by coming and sharing a delicious dinner and singing and dancing
for Shabbat with this jazz-infused service, led by Kendra Cogert
and the Shabbatones. Following the dinner will be a dessert oneg
and Israeli dancing sponsored by Leah Lieberman, whose twins
Marley and Myzelle will be celebrating their b’nai mitzvah that
Saturday. It should be a truly fun evening!
As in every article, I encourage you to get involved! Don’t stand
on the sidelines and let your talents go untapped, find your way to
get involved, help the community, and have fun in the process! If
you have any questions about opportunities to get involved, don’t
hesitate to call me at (562) 434-0996 ext. 111.
I hope to see you November 22nd!

Foundation’s Message
FOUNDATION UPDATE
By Mark Beizer, Foundation President
The Temple Israel Foundation holds
about $1.6 million in net assets –
moneys entrusted to us by generous
donors along with the accumulated
earnings from investments. What did
we do with it last year (budget year
ending June 30, 2014) and how did we
do financially?
Although we will not know the final
results until our audit is done which
will take another month or two, we
do know that our total net assets are about $1,618,000. Our
investments did pretty well (as, of course, 2013 was pretty good
year for stocks...). The total yield was about $162,500. And in
2013-14 we distributed a total of about $67,000 to the Temple
to support the following programs:
yy Annual distribution to temple operating budget: $37,000
yy Lectures and programming -- Susannah Heschel and Daniel
Matt programs: $11,000 (Lapid-Shapiro and Pilger Funds)
yy Torah Center expenses -- $3,800 (Lapid Fund)
yy Camperships -- $600 (Lemmerman Fund)
yy Torah Center Scholarships: $15,000 (Davis Fund)
So after making the above disbursements, and other various
expenses, the net asset base of the Foundation grew by about
$83,675.
Of course we need to continue growing the Foundation so that
we can contribute even larger amounts in coming years for our
growing congregation. Our vision is to set aside moneys for a
building capital replenishment fund -- to make sure we have
funds available for major repairs as well as further upgrades as
the new building ages – as well as endowing the senior clergy
and educator positions.
So I ask you to join us this year in committing to build our
Foundation. In addition to all you currently do for the Temple,
consider contributing to the Foundation as well, particularly by
pledging a future gift or bequest. If you wish, you can designate
your pledge or gift for a particular use, or create a specialized
fund. Remember ... there are relatively “painless” ways to do this
via various types of remainder trusts and other vehicles. We can
help you understand these vehicles ... just ask Eric Shatzkin or
any member of the Foundation Board.

I am very ecstatic to be having my Bar Mitzvah. My religious

Our Youth Group, ANDI
During the month of October, our Temple Israel Youth Group
ANDI (Adolescents Now Doing Incredible things) had a lot of
fun and enjoyed many events. We loved the NFTY (National
Federation of Temple Youth) Fall Kallah, a regional Jewish teen
event, as well as our bake sale, which we thank you for supporting.
This month, we have exiting things to do to like our 678 event
here at Temple Israel on November 8th at 2 p.m. We would love
to see all of our TI 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at this event. They
are sure to have a great time with this “taste of NFTY.” We are
very proud to say that we will be the first Reform congregation in
the nation to host an official NFTY 678 event. Also this month,
ANDI is going to the NFTY SoCal Social Justice Kallah from
November 21-23 where we will learn about social justice and get
to see our regional NFTY friends again. Don’t forget to order
your ANDI shirts now to help support ANDI. All you need to
do is fill out an order form or even buy a shirt on the spot, while
they are available. ANDI updates will be provided each month
during the coming year. If you have any questions about ANDI,
feel free to talk to any of our Teen board members or Youth
Director Kara Liu at [email protected]

The Many Gifts of Sisterhood
By Joanne Levy, Newsletter & Publicity
Gift (noun) 1. Something given
voluntarily without payment in
return; a present:
Gifts come in
many forms. They may be wrapped
beautifully in a box, elegantly tied with
ribbon and probably purchased from the
Sisterhood Gift Shop. Gifts may also
be an expression of love or friendship
coming in the form of a card, a small
item that brings a smile to your face. Or, perhaps the gift involves
giving of one’s time, such as a helping hand, the offer of a ride, a
meal, or a shoulder to lean upon. Tzedakah is the gift we give to
strangers within our community as a way of making the world
just a little bit better. When we give tzedakah, we are expressing
our commitment to justice in the form of material or monetary
assistance. Sisterhood gives such gifts to the congregation and
community year round, such as when we serve meals at Ronald
McDonald House, or collect coats for those who need something
to keep them warm in the winter.
2. A special ability, aptitude or talent: We all have people in
our lives who exhibit special gifts. Perhaps we know a child who
is academically gifted, or an athlete who can kick a soccer ball,
or musically and solos in the orchestra, choir or dance show. We
also know individuals who have the gift of hospitality and make
everyone feel welcomed and comfortable. Some people are socially
gifted with a sense of humor and presence that attracts others and
entertains. There are those among us who have a gift of leadership
and are able to motivate others to achieve. Our sisterhood is filled
by women who share their gifts with Temple Israel.
3. (verb) To bestow or show favor or
gesture; to present to, such as a gift: Temple
Israel’s has gifted funds needed to purchase
shades for our sanctuary and social hall. In
August, this stunning Nambe’ Kiddush Cup
was gifted to Temple Israel for use at B’nai
Mitzvah and other special occasions. This
Kiddush Cup, among others, is available in
the Sisterhood Gift Shop
Gifts for Chanukah:
We would like to advertise: everything thing you need or might
need for Chanukah. Lots of glittery decorations, window gels,
gift tags, latke spatulas, decorative and play dreidels, gifts for
children; Latke tongs, flashing menorahs for the window, and
more.
Gifts to give throughout the year:
We also carry beautiful Judaica gifts for weddings, lots of
jewelry and gifts for Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. We also carry Michael

Karen Fried has donated two books, Jewish Humor and Jewish

has started a new tradition of donating a library book whenever
there is a yahrzeit in her family. She picks something that her
relative was interested in. It’s a lovely new tradition for her.
Perhaps some other congregants would like to do the same.

The Aleppo Codex : A True Story of Obsession,
Faith, and the Pursuit of an Ancient Bible
By Matti Friedman
November 5, 19, and December 3
The creation account in Genesis is one of the most familiar
stories in the Torah - or is it? What really happens in the creation
story? In this three-session course, we will study the Torah’s
creation story, along with midrashim, interpretive stories, that
elaborate on Genesis. We will compare the creation story of
our tradition with other explanations, including other cultural
narratives and scientific understandings of how the world came
to be. In addition, we will engage in some creation of our own,
using arts and creative writing to deepen our understandings.
Cost: None. Please RSVP to Charmaine at [email protected]
Discussion led by Pat Glow
More than 1000 years ago, the
most perfect copy of the Hebrew
Bible was written. It was kept
safe through one upheaval after
another in the Middle East, and by
the 1940s it was housed in a dark
grotto in Aleppo, Syria and had
become known around the world
as the Aleppo Codex. Journalist
Matti Friedman’s true-life detective
story traces how this precious
manuscript was smuggled from its
hiding place in Syria into the newly
founded state of Israel and reveals
uncomfortable truths about greed, state cover-ups, and the role
of historical treasures in creating a national identity.

Teacher: Liz Sharzer
In this four-week workshop, you will have the opportunity
to write the stories of your Jewish or spiritual journeys. Your
journey might have started as you or your child prepared to
become a bar or bat mitzvah. Perhaps it began when you were
a child at summer camp. It may have begun on a trip to Israel
or another state or country. Your journey may have begun in
Torah Study. You might find yourself on a new journey each
time you prepare for and celebrate a Jewish holiday. Perhaps
your spiritual or Jewish journey began in a particular class or
during a discussion in college. In this four week workshop, you
will learn to write essays about your journeys and edit your work
with the help of the instructor and class members. Cost: None
