When the Son of Man comes in glory,
may we be among those who have
fed the hungry, welcomed the
stranger and clothed the naked. For
Jesus tells us clearly that it is those
who have demonstrated good
stewardship by sharing their gifts
with the less fortunate who will
receive God’s blessing and inherit
the kingdom.

Community Life
Dear Friends,
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Christ the
King. It marks the conclusion of the Liturgical
Year. Next weekend we will celebrate the First
Sunday of Advent. These months have passed so
quickly!
While today’s feast is called The Solemnity of Our
Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, each of the
readings uses the image of shepherds and
shepherding. Each reading offers an insight into
what shepherding means, not just in physical terms,
but in terms of a worldview, an engaged faith. We
are reminded that the image of a shepherd was a
metaphor for kingship in ancient Israel and
throughout the Near East. It was a metaphor for
both nurturing and power.
Ezekiel, who was a prophet to Jewish refugees in
Babylonia, depicts God as a shepherd gathering the
scattered sheep. God is the seeker of strays, the
injured, the sick. God also knows how to shepherd
the sleek and the strong. Psalm 23 presents
shepherding as the act of accompaniment. God
participates in the community as its members bear
each other up in times of evil and destruction. The
psalmist describes God’s role, showing how
accompaniment becomes deliverance.
For Matthew, the shepherd sorts out those who
opted for the kingdom and those who opted out –
the sheep and the goats. The gospels do not get
much clearer in delineating the kind of relationships
we are called to have, whether they are personal,
political, or economic. A commentator on the
gospel writes: “I cannot read Matthew’s Last
Judgment scene without thinking of Fritz
Eichenberg’s many woodcuts in the CATHOLIC
WORKER newspaper. One, ‘The Christ of the
Breadlines’, depicts Jesus as the central figure in the
dark, Depression era line of homeless and hungry
men.” The commentator goes on to ask: “In what
lines of human suffering would Eichenberg place
Jesus today? How would the artist interpret,
visually, the economic violence that regulates our
November 23, 2014
resources to benefit the few at the expense of the
many”? There are worldviews to choose from and a
faith to be lived out. May the feast that we are
celebrating, in both its nurturing and its power, be
our guidance and strength.
It is ironic that today, the Feast of Christ the King,
we recall that Jesus never acted as a king. Rather he
embraced poverty, not wealth. He taught humility,
not arrogance. He emphasized service, not
dominion. He chose a cross, not a palace. He calls
us to serve the least, the lost and the last. His
kingship lay only in his plea that we completely
reverse our notion of what truly matters in life, and
what will ultimately satisfy our heart’s greatest
desires. In this gospel Jesus tells us that when we
each stand before God we won’t be given a
confusing test, rather we will be asked: Did you
feed the hungry? Did you shelter the homeless? Did
you care for the sick?
Peace,
Fr. Steve

x YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE: As you know
Our Lady of Fatima Parish, St. Aloysius Parish and
St. Pater’s Parish are in the process of searching
for a Youth Minister. Our three parishes are
working with the Diocesan Office for Youth Ministry
to develop a plan that would be beneficial to the
youth of our three parishes. We will be meeting with
the Parent Advisory Boards of our parishes in the
coming weeks to invite their suggestions and
insights. Our three parishes are committed to Youth
Ministry and hope to develop a Youth Ministry that
is appealing to the teens of all three parishes.
Please continue to pray for our three parishes
during this time of reflection on how to serve our
teens. In addition to the teens of our parishes we
are trying to look at ways that we might be able to
involve our young adults in the lives of our
parishes.

CaringHands Corner
Wow, the clock is ticking and
the days are flying by quickly!
Believe it or not next Sunday
begins Advent, a time to slow
down and prepare ye the way.
For the first Sunday in Advent
CaringHands and the
CaringHands Prayer Group invite you to join us with your
prayers for our sick and homebound.
If you would be so kind, use the Fatima Focus and cut out
the names of those people on our sick list. Then place the
list on or near your Advent Wreath so you will remember
them in prayer. Perhaps you can make it Family Prayer
Time during this Advent season?
Whatsoever you do to the least of my people that you do
unto me.”
Matthew 25:40
We from CaringHands thank you in advance and
ask God’s blessings upon all our Parish Family.
UN MENSAJE DE
NUESTRO PARROCO
Queridos amigos,
humano ubicaría Eichenberg a Jesús hoy?
palacio.

WAITING – NOT DOING ANYTHING ADVENT SILENT RETREAT
Nothing in our culture encourages us to wait or to
discover what waiting can reveal to us of ourselves, life,
and God. We are made to feel that if we find ourselves
waiting, then something is wrong with us: we’re not
efficient—we’re not “with it.” Indeed, anxiety,
helplessness, fear, and vulnerability encourage us to
avoid waiting. Waiting reveals—as nothing else does—
what life can be. To avoid waiting is to avoid God,
ourselves, and a richness of life that remains hidden until
we begin to realize that the more we depend upon
God, the more free we are!

Amidst the cold of winter, the half spent night of Advent
beckons us to not only ponder this exquisite hymn in
relation to the birth of Jesus, but to also draw from the
long history of the rose as an image of Mary as well.
How might the Song of Songs, the Prophet Isaiah,
poetry, song, and silence spring forth tender shoots of
blossoming intimacy between Mary and Jesus deep in
our souls this season?
