Centennial Fundraiser
Centennial students are selling trash bags and zip close baggies from October 27-November 11. Our goal is for every
student to sell 3 rolls of trash bags and 3 packages of zip close
baggies. If we meet our goal, we will be able to replace the
retaining wall on the playground and still have money left
over for other activities such as: fun fair, author visits, other
playground equipment, etc….If you don’t need any trash bags
or zip close baggies but would still like to donate money to
our students, any amount would be appreciated. Please contact any Centennial student or the office to order your bags or
donate.
PCHS Student Council Food Drive
On Saturday November 15th the PCHS Student Council will be
heading out into the community from 10am to 1pm to collect
food donations that will be donated to Polo Lifeline. During
this time, Student Council members will go throughout town
collecting donations door-to-door. Because of the limited
number of students we have involved it is impossible to visit
every house in town. If, you want to make sure your home is
visited and your donations collected you can arrange for us to
pick up your donation by calling the high school at 946-3314
and leave your name, address, and phone number with the office. Then, on Saturday the 15th all you would have to do is
have your donations outside your front door by 10am and we
will be around to pick them up from you. If you have any
questions please contact Tyler Pearce at the high school (9463314) or email him at [email protected]

It is hard to believe that it is November already! The month of October was a busy time. Looking back, here are some highlights:
The Centennial staff would like to thank the Polo Fire Department for providing students with tips each day regarding fire
safety. We appreciate you working with the students and staff as we practiced a school-wide fire drill.
The Centennial Parent Organization (CPO) put on Donuts for Dads. We appreciate all the dads that were able to make it to
this event. It was great to see all the students smiling faces as you enjoyed donuts and conversation. We are thankful for
your continued support!
Jimmie Getter from the RSAC has been providing age appropriate abuse prevention programs in Boone, Winnebago &
Ogle counties for the past 30 years. She was able to speak to each classroom at Centennial about body safety.
We have much to look forward to during the month of November.
Our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Committee will be working on a new trait. November’s words of the month are
shame and forgiveness. Please take a moment to talk to your child about these two traits throughout the month. Congratulations to the students for going above and beyond exhibiting October’s character trait of perseverance and patience.
Parent Teacher Conferences is a time we look forward to sharing your child’s social, emotional, and academic progress.
You are an essential member of your child’s progress and we look forward to meeting with you.
It is with great pleasure that Centennial School with be holding a Veterans Day Assembly on Monday, November 11 th at

Public discussions regarding security and safety in schools have started again with the recent incidents both nearby and
across the country. There is no more frightening feeling for a parent than the realization that your son(s) and/or daughter(s) may be
in danger at school.
Polo Schools have taken a proactive step in increasing security at all the buildings in the past two years. Here at Aplington
Middle School, we have made several changes to increase the safety of our students:
1. Locks on outside entry doors with electronic fobs to allow access.
2. All visitors are required to sign in when entering the building.
3. Camera and buzzer at front, main entrance to allow entry only after school staff has identified the person wanting entry
into the building.
4. Eight cameras inside and outside of the building that record all entry into and exits from the building.
5. Staff and student training for occasions when an unwelcome intruder may be in the building or outside of the building.
(Lockdowns, evacuations, etc.)
6. Crisis planning to be ready for a variety of catastrophic events related to weather, deaths, injury, sickness, etc.)
Aplington Middle School, as a result, is much more prepared should such an event occur. We can never guarantee complete prevention of serious incidents but we are well-prepared to handle incidents that may happen. Our students are our most important resource and we are dedicated to provide all students a safe and secure learning place.
Sincerely,
Mark Downey, Principal

During the month of October, several important events were offered at PCHS. First of all, the freshmen and sophomores took the
MAP test which tests academic growth of students within the areas of reading, language arts, science, and math. Overall our students did very well and the test scores show considerable growth in all areas. The PSAT/NMSQT was offered to PCHS juniors in
mid-October. If students test well, they will qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. We also offered two college visits to our
seniors, one to Illinois State University and one to Western Illinois University. These trips were very informative and the students
enjoyed seeing first-hand what college life is like. Ms. Donmeyer also spoke with juniors regarding future plans and the ACT
Exam in March during their English classes. She will continue working with the juniors during Homeroom to ensure they continue
on the path to success with their post high school plans. College and Military representatives continue to visit during Homeroom
throughout the month of November. A schedule is outside the Counseling Office and on the PCHS announcements as well. College-bound juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend these informational sessions. Please note that if you have any questions or
would like to discuss your student’s future plans, please contact Ms. Donmeyer in the PCHS Counseling Office.
Important Upcoming Events:
November 6th Sauk Valley Community College’s College Night from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.
December 2nd Whiteside Area Career Center Presentation to PCHS Sophomores during Homeroom
December 8th Financial Aid Night at PCHS @ 6:00 for Parents of PCHS Seniors
December 9th WACC Tour for PCHS Sophomores
The fall sports season is coming to a close for the Marcos with a great deal of excitement. Our volleyball team wrapped up its regular season by winning the consolation championship at the AFC Volleyball Tournament on October 25 th. Congratulations to Madison Merdian for being selected to the All-Tournament Team. Our Lady Marcos fell in the regional opener to Amboy on Monday,
but fought hard to the end. Thank you to Coach Leffelman, Coach Bumsted, and all the volleyball players for their hard work and
dedication this season. The golf season also recently came to a close, with the Marco golfers finishing 6th at the conference golf
tournament. The golf team also had a sectional qualifier; Chris Rademacher. Congratulations to Tristin Woodin and Chris Rademacher on earning All-Conference. Great job Marco golfers and coaches Reece and Pearce on a successful season. The Polo football team finished their regular season with a mark of 7-2 and will be hosting Ottawa Marquette in the first round of the IHSA football playoffs on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The team also won a share of the conference championship, something it has not achieved
since 1997. Thank you to all the Marco fans for their support of our athletes and we hope to see everyone Saturday for the playoff
game.

Third Graders Investigate Famous Inventors and Inventions
Third grade students have been investigating famous inventors and their inventions while trying to answer the essential
question, “How can problem solving lead to new ideas?” Groups of students were given pipe cleaners, tin foil, and coffee filters
and told to create their own invention. Some groups chose to create an invention that would solve a problem while other groups
chose to create an invention for enjoyment. Each group presented their new invention to both third grade classes. The kids are
currently working on creating a poster sized timeline of five famous inventors and their inventions.
