FOCUS
by Fr John Fitz-Herbert
So often in Matthew's portrait of Jesus, the
Nazarene eschews making distinctions. He calls all
- without distinguishing between people - to hear
the Word of God and to put it into practice. That's
the true disciple as far as Matthew is concerned:
hear and do!
Yet in our gospel this Sunday - the Great
Judgement parable - Jesus actually makes a
distinction. It catches disciples from every culture
and age off-guard: do they love or do they not
love? Love not in the sense of an emotion so much
as in the sense of an act of the will, the loving act of
willing another's good even, if need arise, at the
expense of their own. "Hell is the suffering of being
unable to love," said old Father Zossima or, as John
puts it in his first epistle, "Those who do not love
remain in death."
As you did it to one of the least of these my sisters
or brothers you did it to me. Just as Jesus appeared
at his birth as a helpless child that the world was
free to care for or destroy, so now he appears in his
resurrection as the pauper, the prisoner, the
stranger: appears in every form of human need
that the world is free to serve or to ignore.

THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI
after the world had experienced the horrors of World War I. This feast sought to
confirm that the ultimate authority was not a nation or military might but the
authority of Christ as universal King. Coming as it does on the final Sunday of
the Church’s liturgical year, this feast proclaims that Christ presides over the
whole of history and that all time and all ages belong to him. (CCC450)

When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry,
welcomed the stranger, and clothed the naked. For Jesus tells us clearly that it is those
who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less fortunate
who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the kingdom.
