This is a live-in position with advising and administrative responsibilities for a residential environment
serving approximately 100-300 students. The ACRL reports directly to a Coordinator for Residence life.
Each ACRL is enrolled in UNCG’s Graduate School and pursuing a Master’s degree or PhD. ACRLs
serve as a vital part of UNCG’s residential communities with multiple duties and responsibilities. Each
ACRL will work with a different community across UNCG including but not limited to the Quad,
Spartan Village, Cornelia Strong College, Lofts on Lee, First Year Experience, MOSAIC, and Make a
Difference house. Additionally, each ACRL will have experiences such as hall council, conduct,
supervision, administrative services, and teaching.
Student Development
 Knows, understands, and adheres to all University and departmental policies and regulations, and
sets an example by his/her own behavior.
 Gets to know the residents in the building and is able to identify the needs of the community by
being available and visible in the living area.
 Is known by residents as an available, approachable, and resourceful staff member.
 Advises, mediates, and confers when asked to do so, and responds appropriately to confidential
matters. Is familiar with referral sources when appropriate.
 Works to prevent crisis situations and responds appropriately in accordance with confidential
matters, and becomes familiar with referral sources and refers when appropriate.
 Develops a sense of community by encouraging residents to become acquainted with one another
and by encouraging consideration of and concern for others.
 Maintains a positive attitude towards others and appreciates others whose lifestyle and attitudes
are different.
 Works to identify and resolve situations in the living area including roommate conflicts, personal
problems, and emergencies using community agreements.
 Helps maintain an atmosphere in the hall conducive to studying, sleeping, and socializing.
 Confronts inappropriate behavior and documents incidents and information as appropriate.

Hall Council
 Serves as the co-advisor to the hall council and encourages the organization and its leaders as they
seek to influence the quality of life in the residence hall.
 Identifies and encourages student to obtain leadership positions within the hall council.
 Attends all hall council meetings and programs.
 Coordinates the election of hall council officers.
 Serves as a resource for the hall council members, giving constant feedback on issues and ideas.
 Serves as a liaison between hall council, their Coordinator for Residence Life (Coordinator) and
Housing & Residence Life.
 Assists the hall council in identifying student needs and interests and setting goals accordingly.
 Is responsible for ensuring that an accurate record of hall council funds is kept and that monies are
spent appropriately.
Programming
 Coordinates and implements programs and activities in the hall.
 Identifies programming needs of the residents in the living area.
 Participates in both planned and spontaneous activities in the living area.
 Documents and reports programming activities to their Coordinator.
 Encourages residents to participate in Residence Life and University events.
General Administration
 Attends all training opportunities and departmental staff meetings.
 Facilitates weekly staff meetings and training as appropriate.
 Hosts at least ten posted office hours per week.
 Works with Assistant Director for up to five hours per week on professional development.
 Completes all paperwork accurately and submits it in a timely manner and in the proper format
(i.e. hard copy v. web forms). This includes but is not limited to: monthly reports, evaluations,
programming forms, fire drill/alarm reports, staff duty schedules, health and safety inspections,
and others as directed.
 Distributes and collects information to and from students and Resident Advisors in a timely
manner. This includes but is not limited to: evaluations, judicial letters, occupancy information,
Roommate Agreements, surveys, etc.
 Provides input into decisions regarding policies, procedures, programs, and facilities.
 Assists with the check-in and check-out procedures and the room reservation and room change
processes.
Maintenance and Facility Administration
 Carries out the procedure for key checkouts and lockouts as established.
 Helps maintain a safe and secure environment that is conducive to student growth and
development. This includes conducting fire drills, and being aware of and reporting any
maintenance concerns. Additionally, conducting monthly health and safety inspections with the
staff.
 Is aware of and follows departmental procedures for reporting housekeeping and maintenance
problems, and follows up to see that these requests have been completed.
 Communicates frequently with building housekeepers, the housekeeping supervisor, FIXT, and

their Coordinator concerning maintenance and housekeeping requests.
Investigates any damage to the building and reports it to FIXT immediately.
Walks through the building on a regular basis to identify any facility or maintenance concerns.
Walk through the building with the housekeeping supervisor at least once a semester or on an as
needed basis.
Staff Responsibility
 Works cooperatively as a part of a team of staff members responsible for the building with potential
supervision responsibilities.
 Serves as a leader and a mentor to the building staff.
 Supports, advises, leads and in some cases directs the other staff team members in order to assure
that performance expectations are being met.
 Confers with their Coordinator when a staff member is not meeting position expectations,
implements an action plan developed with the help of their Coordinator and keeps them informed
about future performance.
 Supports staff decisions and assists in disciplinary actions.
 Serves at least one week of full campus duty on call rotation each semester with a Coordinator
serving as backup.
 Coordinates time off with their Coordinator.
 Attends all staff meetings and functions.
 Participates in the selection, training and evaluation of Residence Life staff.
 Assumes other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Directorate staff of the Office of
Housing and Residence Life.
Learning Community
 Plan and facilitate interactive weekly meetings, co-curricular initiatives, and recognition activities
for the program participants.
 Maintains an accurate database of all participants.
 Assists with the recruitment, engagement, and retention of Living Learning Community
participants.
 Assist with the development and implementation of a Foundations for Learning 101 integrated
course and opportunity to co-teach SAS during the spring semester.
 Meet with participants once per semester to assess their progress in the community.
 Develop an action plan for students on academic probation.
 Identify, recommend, and implement new approaches to enhance the Living Learning
Communities.
 Review and provide updated information for the Housing and Residence Life website with
information related to the Living Learning Community.
 Meet frequently with supervisor to provide updates, solicit feedback, and monitor performance.
 Manage expenditures and budget.
 Create and develop plans and procedures to ensure that every program participant is equipped
with the tools and skills need to implement positive change.
 Identify and implement activities for program participants to increase self-awareness, competency,
and advocacy.
 Create and assess learning outcomes for the program.

Facilitate workshops and trainings sessions on topics related to social justice in various formats for
students, and Housing and Residence Life graduate and professional staff.
Create opportunities for participants to engage in reflection and discernment.
Collaborate with others to assess, plan, and implement activities.
Period and Terms of Employment
The term of this appointment is for one academic year; beginning on July 26, 2013 and ending on May 16,
2014 (specific date may be negotiated due to building readiness and closing transition). Vacation and time
away should be coordinated with supervisor. For breaks, GAs will follow the University Academic
Calendar.
Conduct
Graduate Assistants are expected to conduct themselves appropriately. Graduate Assistants must abide by
all Housing and Residence Life, the University, the State of North Carolina and Federal regulations,
policies, and laws. Any violation of University and/or Housing and Residence Life policy may result in the
termination of the Graduate Assistant.
Termination of Employment/Employment Status
Termination of employment will proceed if a staff member fails to carry out the responsibilities of the GA
position and/or violates a University Policy or Procedure that would encompass termination from
employment. Termination of employment would immediately end all benefits and the staff member would
be financially responsible for any debts still outstanding.
Personnel Policies
Graduate Assistants are expected to exhibit positive role modeling through academic excellence,
leadership development, and University pride. They should demonstrate commitment and pride for the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Housing and Residence Life through respectful language,
behavior, and uphold/abide by University and department policies, rules, and regulations.
Email
Email is the University’s official system of communication. Due to the quick access email gives to students,
Graduate Assistants must establish and utilize their university email (iSpartan) account. Graduate
Assistants are expected to check their email account multiple times a day and respond immediately to
requests from their supervisor, central office staff, or leadership within Housing and Residence Life.
Additional Duties as Assigned
Given the nature of the Graduate Assistant position, on occasion, additional responsibilities not explicitly
outlined may be asked of staff members. As these situations occur, GAs may be asked to assist with other
duties as deemed necessary by Housing and Residence Life.
