Which wine pairs well with Cicada-on-a-Stick?
Hazel, my German Shorthair seems to be gaining weight lately. Could it be? Yes, it
definitely is. Hazel has been stuffing herself with 17 Year Periodical Cicadas, (Brood III
biggest of the broods). She runs through the grass with her nose a-snorting, tail a-wagging
and ears keenly trained on that cicada cirp. Cirp – Cirp – Cirp and then gobble. Hazel has
another one down.
Watching Hazel work the yard like a warm tongue on cold ice
cream reminded me that insects have been a mainstay food for
many peoples of the world for as long as bugs and people have
existed. Cicadas being one of the delicacies of the insect world.
For several weeks now Central, South Central and Southeast
Iowa have been inundated with Bigillions of 17 Year Periodical
Cicadas (Magicicada septenecim). They are probably going to
be around for another month. Why not make some use of them.
Cicadas on a Stick –
There are 100’s of cicada recipes on the WWW. Cicada on a
National Geographic
stick, cicada stew, chocolate covered cicada, boiled cicada,
cicada pizza, chocolate cicada ice cream, cicada salad, baked cicada, cicada tacos or deep
1
fried cicada. The recipes are endless and so are the
potential wine pairings. Since these cicadas belong to
the same phylum “Arthropoda” as do Shrimp, my guess
is you would start out with a nice dry to semi-dry Seyval,
Vignoles or LaCrescent. The chocolate covered cicadas
would demand a nice dry or fortified Chambourcin,
Frontenac, Marquette or Norton.
For you folks willing to venture into pairing wines with the
insect world, here are some good recipe resources to get you started.

Iowa Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds made a visit to the ISU
Midwest Grape & Wine Industry Institute on campus this past Monday, 6-16-14. Bob &
Sharman Wersen - Tassel Ridge Winery, along with encouragement from the Iowa Wine
Growers Association were instrumental in setting up this visit. I was invited to attend and tag
along for the presentation and tour. I want to thank the Governor and Lt. Governor and
everybody involved is arranging this. It was good to show off what we are doing at ISU. mlw

Judging for the Illinois State Fair Wine Competition was held Monday - Wednesday, June
16-18th of 2014 at the Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL. 12 Judges
evaluated 171 amateur wines and 257 commercial wines during this period. Bradley Beam
directed this event and the Illinois Grape Growers & Vintners Association sponsored this
event. I participated in the commercial wine
judging held on Tuesday and Wednesday. I was
very impressed in how organized this event was
set up. Every step of the process ran smoothly
and very professional. mlw

Doug & Susan Danenberger of Danenberger Family Vineyards (DFV) invited the wine
officials and wine judges involved with the Illinois State Fair to their winery and vineyard for
and evening meal on Tuesday, June 17th. It was an evening to remember. The Chef at the
Land of Lincoln Community College culinary program prepared a FANTASTIC meal along
with appetizers prior in the outdoor Argentine grill and Forno Bravo Pizza oven. It was a
beautiful evening. Warm temps and NO mosquitoes.
The following pictures describe our experience and the features of this unique winery in the
middle or corn and soybean fields in Southern, IL. I want to thank the Danenberger's for
their special hospitality. It was a very enjoyable evening and the wine was very good. mlw

I stopped by East Grove Farms located about 5 miles southeast of Salem, IA in Henry
County on my way back from the Illinois State Fair Wine Judging on Wednesday afternoon.
I arrived just in time to meet up with Kurt Garretson - son of Joel Garretson and brother of
Justin Garretson. All three are involved with their elderberry/aronia/grape farm and winery
that had their grand opening on 6-21-14. I met all three of these guys about 2 years ago
when Joel entered the Iowa Wine Growers Association Amateur Wine competition and won
the Iowa Amateur Winemaker of the Year award.
This a very unique operation. It is located on the oldest continuously owned farm in Iowa
(settled in 1837) and it uses organic farming practices. I want to thank Kurt for giving me the
tour. Unfortunately I punctured the sidewall of my tire while touring the farm. The tour ended
up costing me approx. $150 more than I intended to be. Thank goodness for "Fix a Flat Tire
Inflator". It got me all the way home to Indianola, Iowa. mlw

My final quick stop (tire was slowly going flat) on my way back from Illinois was at Wooden
Wheel Vineyards & Winery located approximately 11 miles west of Washington, Iowa on the
south south of Hwy 92. Michael and Connie Vincent are the owners/operators of this
operation. Michael is the winemaker, Connie is the vineyard manager and they both work in
the winery tasting room and event center.
(Left) Michael recently had repainted
his motorcycle. He put his Steel Horse
Wines homepage address on the rear
fenders. The Steel Horse brand will
represent their non-estate wines vs
the Wooden Wheel Vineyards brand
that are 100% estate wines.
Nice bike. Nice paint job. Nice way to
write off a bike! 6-18-14

6-18-14 Hi Mike,
Haven’t had much time recently to chat with you as we’ve been so busy on the farm this
year. I saw the scare crow in your last newsletter and thought I would share ours. I can’t
attest as to their effectiveness for deer control but from a distance from the road, they look
real enough for folks driving down the road to wave hello to them. We were clearing the old
terraces of locust trees this spring and kept the stumps high enough so that we wouldn’t hit

them with a mower. Then we got the idea to decorate them with leftover spray paint and old
hats. Kids and adults love them and enjoy getting their pictures taken with them. Our
attorney calls them our branch managers.
Cheers,
