1 Fifteenth Sunday of Pentecost (C) (or) Twenty Second Sunday Ordinary (C) Jeremiah 2:4-13 Psalm 81:1, 10-16 (or) Sirach 10:12-18 and Proverbs 25:6-7 or Psalm 112 Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16 Luke 14:1, 7-14 ESV Jeremiah 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel. Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after 6 worthlessness, and became worthless? They did not say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and 7 deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?' And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in, you defiled my land and made 8 my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who handle the law did not know me; the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went 9 after things that do not profit. "Therefore I still contend with you, declares the LORD, and with your 10 children's children I will contend. For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and 11 examine with care; see if there has been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though 12 they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. Be appalled, 13 O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. 5 NRS Jeremiah 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of 5 Israel. Thus says the LORD: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and 6 went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did not say, "Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a 7 land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?" I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my 8 land, and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, "Where is the LORD?" Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, 9 and went after things that do not profit. Therefore once more I accuse you, says the LORD, and I accuse 10 your children's children. Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; 11 see if there has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? 12 But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at 13 this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the LORD, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. 7 ESV Luke 14:1 One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. NRS Luke 14:1 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. ESV Luke 14:7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the 8 places of honor, saying to them, "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down 9 in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this person,' and then you will begin with shame to take 10 the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who 11 sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will 12 be exalted." He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return 13 14 and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just." NRS 8 Luke 14:7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case 9 someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take 10 the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who 11 sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble 12 themselves will be exalted." He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may 13 invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the 14 crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
