Janice ‘Jan’ M. Arbuckle — Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Rev. David C. Barker — Wabasha
Janice “Jan” Mary Arbuckle, 69, passed away surrounded
by her loving family at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Scottsdale,
Ariz., on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013.
She was born Dec. 20, 1943, to Ben and Mary
(Lynch) Brzinski in St. Cloud. Jan and Bob
Arbuckle were married May 1, 1975, at the
Little Brown Church in Iowa. Jan worked in
the travel industry for many years and enjoyed
traveling to many places around the world. Jan
and Bob lived in Wabasha for 30 years on the
Mississippi River, where they loved boating.
Snowmobiling with friends and family also
was enjoyed for many years. In 1999, Jan and
Arbuckle
Bob moved to Lake Havasu City permanently
after vacationing in Arizona for several years.
In Havasu, Jan was a member of the Lake
Havasu Classic Car Club and Women’s Club,
which held many activities that she was
involved with, and developed wonderful
friendships. Jan enjoyed playing Bunco, cards, dancing, visiting
casinos, painting landscapes and spending time with family and
friends. Jan loved her family deeply and will be greatly missed.
Jan is survived by her children, Scott (Gayle) Deobald, of
Zumbro Falls, Tim Kowalski, of Fargo, N.D., Chris (Rick) Kolar,
of Zumbro Falls, and Shannon (Russ) Mullen, of Mesa, Ariz.
Also three stepchildren, Bob (Tami) Arbuckle, of Hayfield, Vicki
(Mike) Wente, of Menomonie, Wis., and Joe (Connie) Arbuckle,
of La Crosse, Wis.; brothers, Ron (Arlene) Brzinski, of Maplewood, Len (Judy) Brzinski, of Tucson, Ariz., and John (Becky)
Brzinski, of Clear Lake; her uncle, Pat Lynch, of Arizona; 18
cherished grandchildren; and eight adored great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Bob; and her parents,
Ben and Mary Brzinski.
A visitation will be held Friday, Sept 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. with
a Service of Remembrance at 5 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral
Home, Rochester Chapel, 1624 37th St. N.W.

Mollie B. Hammel — Dover
Mollie B. Hammel, 70, of Dover, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at
St. Isidore Health Center in Plainview.
Mollie was born July 23, 1943, to James and
Elna (Gardner) Reeves in Sioux Falls, S.D. After graduating from Dover-Eyota High School
in 1961, she married Richard Hammel on July
12, 1961, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ
(The North Church). Together they had three
children. Up to her retirement, Mollie worked
15 years as a child care counselor for troubled
youth at the VonWald Shelter. She truly enjoyed children and caring for them.
Mollie was an avid traveler. She and her

husband, Rich, traveled to almost all the states,
including Hawaii. For the last five years they
wintered in Florence, Ariz. She also enjoyed gambling at Diamond Joe’s and Treasure Island. Most importantly, she loved her
family, enjoyed cooking for them and just spending time with
them. Her pride and joy were her two Shih Tzu dogs, Hanna and
Huey. Mollie will be sadly missed.
Mollie is survived by her husband, Richard Hammel, of
Dover; children, Robin (Steve) Erickson, of Eyota, Renee (Scott)
Pennington, of Florence, Ariz., and Rodney (Liane) Hammel,
of Dover; grandchildren Kelsey, Courtney and Carley Erickson,
Whitney, Samuel and Dayton Pennington and Riley and Kaylee
Hammel; great-grandchildren, Megan and Chloe and the anticipation of a third great-grandchild in three weeks; sister, Connie
Gilk; many other family and friends; and her two beloved Shih
Tzu’s, Hanna and Huey.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Sue
Brehmer.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Hoff
Funeral Home in St. Charles, with the Rev. Heather Klason officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at the
funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will take
place at Evergreen Cemetery following the service.
Memorials preferred to St. Isidore Health Center in Plainview.

Harriet ‘Kippy’ Rieder — Rochester
Harriet “Kippy” Rieder, 86, beloved wife of Robert Rieder
and mother of four fortunate sons, passed away Friday, Sept. 20,
2013, at Samaritan Bethany Home on Eighth.
She died peacefully in the presence of her family. Kippy was a wonderful spouse, friend and
mom. She was the glue that kept her family
close.
Kippy was born Easter Sunday morning,
April 17, 1927, in St. Cloud, to Raymond and
Eva (Hirt) Bruning. She was baptized Harriet
Ann Paschal Marie Bruning. After graduating
from St. Cloud Cathedral High School in 1945,
she attended Marquette University in MilwauRieder
kee, Wis., where she received her B.S. in medical technology. She then moved to Minneapolis
where she was employed by University of Minnesota Hospitals. At the U, her season tickets
for football and basketball helped convince Bob
to increase his courtship. After their marriage
on May 19, 1952, in St. Cloud, Bob and Kippy
became lifelong Minnesota Golden Gopher
fans. Their allegiance was rewarded when the
Gophers played in the 1997 Final Four, and they
were able to attend.
Kippy and Bob moved from Minneapolis to
River Falls, Wis., and finally to Rochester in 1957. After several
years as a homemaker, she began a 22-year career in the clinical
laboratories at Mayo Clinic, retiring in 1989.
Kippy brought joy and energy to everyone she met. She offered a loving, helping hand to all. She was an active volunteer
with Meals on Wheels, Resurrection Catholic Church, St. Mary’s
Hospital Auxiliary and was past president of the Meadow Park
Association.
Kippy loved to golf with her family and spent many summers
in the Eastwood Ladies golf league with her friends. She and
Bob celebrated their 50th anniversary by attending the Masters
in Augusta, Ga., in 2002. They celebrated their 60th anniversary
with a luncheon and family putting contest at Eastwood.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; sons, Mark (Coleen),
Gary (Lu Ann), Joe (Jennifer) and Jeff (Tracie); 10 grandchildren, Jason, Nick, Jenna, Claire, Katelyn, Will, Shane, Emelia,
Molly and Benjamin; a brother, John (Pam) Bruning; and her
many caregivers at Samaritan Bethany.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Murphy and
Kathryn Hall; and a brother, Robert ‘Bumpy’ Bruning.
A Catholic memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday,
Sept. 23, at River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home in Rochester. A private family burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery
following the service. Visitation will be at the chapel one hour
before the service.
Memorials are preferred to Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Research.

Reverend David C. Barker, a retired Lutheran minister, 79, of
Wabasha, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, in the hospice room at
St. Elizabeth’s Health Care Center in Wabasha.
He was born March 5, 1934, in Owatonna, the
son of George and Ann (Prokopec) Barker. He
graduated from Owatonna High School in 1952.
He then graduated from Dunwoody Institute
in Minneapolis from the baking department.
He married Janice Waananen on Oct. 30, 1954,
in Rochester. David served in the U.S. Army
from 1955-1958, stationed in Germany and Fort
Benning, Ga. In 1960, he and Janice purchased
the Pequot Lakes Bakery and operated the
Barker
business for nine years. While in the baking
business he began his college education and
graduated from the University of MN-Duluth
in 1967, and in 1970 he graduated from Luther
Theological Seminary in St. Paul. He was
ordained in the American Lutheran Church at
Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna on Dec. 27, 1970.
David served churches in Montana from 1971-1980. The couple
moved to Duluth in 1981, where he served Zion Lutheran Church
from 1981-1994. He served First Lutheran Church in Pine River
until 1997 when he retired from the called ministry. He also
served as interim pastor at churches in Minnesota and Texas.
Upon the couple’s move to Wabasha in 2005, he served the area
as a pulpit supply minister.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Lake City. He
also was a member of the National Eagle Center in Wabasha
and served the center as a classroom presenter for five years. He
also was an active volunteer for St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center
in Wabasha.
David is survived by his wife, Janice Barker, Wabasha;
brother-in-law, Marlyn Gillespie, Hudson, Fla.; nephew, Kent
Gillespie, Palm Harbor, Fla.; niece, Kathy Buckley, Bentonville,
Ark.; Janice’s sisters, Arlene (Doug) Carlson, Duluth and Bonnie
(Matt) Belille, Wyoming, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ann
Barker; and one sister, Shirley Gillespie.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m.
at First Lutheran Church in Lake City, with the Rev. Darren
Paulson officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery
in Lake City. Military rites will be performed by the Lake City
American Legion Post No. 110 and Lake City VFW Post No. 8729.
Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in
Wabasha on Friday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church
on Saturday one hour before the service.

Lisa Ann Tri, 54, lifetime resident of Mazeppa, passed away
Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, on her 54th birthday, surrounded by her
children and close friends.
She graduated from Mazeppa High School
(“MHS, is the best!”) in 1977, where she could
be seen on the basketball court or track field
with her signature Chuck Taylors.
With a flair for the dramatic, Lisa will be remembered for her quick wit, amazing artistic
abilities, love for animals and her genuine love
and dedication to her children and grandchildren. “Gran” was a great teacher and a truly
unique personality with creativity oozing from

her pores, which was inherited by her children
and grandchildren.
She is survived by her three biggest fans, Libby (Joe) Carlson,
Spike Henn and Echo Henn; her grandchildren, Bear and Irie
Carlson; her brother, Bradford (Diane) Tri; nieces and nephews;
and good friend, Doug Borneke.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Gwendolyn Tri.
Her body was donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion in
Mazeppa on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. to remember her spirit,
spunk and sarcastic sense of humor.

Kate Dannen — Lewiston
Kate Dannen, 55, of Lewiston, died unexpectedly Thursday,
Sept. 19, 2013, in Lewiston.
Kathryn “Kate” Krenz was born Dec. 29, 1957,
in Lake Preston, S.D., to Merlin and Dorothy
(McNamara) Krenz. In 1968, she moved with
her family to Lewiston, where she graduated
from Lewiston High School in 1976. Following
high school, she attended Winona State University and later graduated from lab tech training
in Faribault. Kate then worked as a lab-tech
for clinics in New Prague and Clara City,
where she met her husband, Loren Dannen.
They married on June 25, 1983, at St. Rose of
Dannen
Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston. The couple
farmed at Clara City before moving back to
Lewiston in the fall of 1988. For several years, Kate helped care
for her mother, Dorothy, during her struggle with Alzheimer’s.
She worked for Riverside Electronics in Lewiston for the past
seven years.
Kate loved to read and spend time with Loren at their camper
in Custer, S.D. In high school, she was involved in chorus and
band, playing the clarinet and received many choral awards. At
Winona State, she also was in the band and played the oboe.
Survivors include her husband, Loren; father, Merlin Krenz,
of Lewiston, and his special friend, Lee Phillips; two brothers,
David (Eileen) Krenz, of LaCrescent, and Stephen (Valerie)
Krenz, of Owasso, Okla.; six nieces and nephews, Christopher
(Krista), Michael, Brian, Kristy, Tim and Jenny; one great-niece,
Violet; two brothers-in-law and their families, Larry (Diane)
Dannen, of St. James, and Randy (Marlys) Dannen, of Willmar;
and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in
death by her mother, Dorothy, and a niece, Kelly.
Services to celebrate Kate’s life will be 11 a.m. Monday at
Hoff Funeral and cremation service in Lewiston, led by funeral
celebrant Jenny Hoff. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday
and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Please share a

groups to spruce up the Northrop
goose street mural on Second Avenue Northwest between Ninth and
10th streets northwest in Rochester
on Aug. 7. Neighbors also were invited, and a total of about 50 people
rolled up their sleeves to paint.
The elaborate mural picturing a
goose inside a swirly floral egg was
the third street mural to be painted
in Rochester neighborhoods in 2008.
It was designed by local muralist
Greg Wimmer. The mural is located
between Goose Egg Park and the
Community Education building, on
the one-way street going north.
