Joseph C. Jennings laid down
the working tools of life on December 8, 2013. He was born
November 3, 1930 in Whizbang,
Oklahoma to Joseph and Ona Jennings. He was very proud of his
Osage County heritage. He graduated from Shidler High School
in 1948 and Oklahoma A&M
College in 1951 with a degree in
Banking and Finance. He served
in the Army during the Korean
War at Dugway Proving Ground,
a chemical and biological warfare military
base on the salt flats of Utah. After discharge
he returned to Tulsa and attended the law
school at the University of Tulsa, graduating in 1958. After practicing law in Tulsa he
was elected to the bench in 1967. He served
the citizens of Tulsa County for 28 years as
a District Judge, primarily in the criminal
division. He was a quiet and no-nonsense
trial judge who maintained one of the most
current trial dockets at the courthouse. He
presided over many high-profile cases including serial killer Gary Alan Walker. In
2000, he witnessed the execution of Walker at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary at
McAlester. He said he attended the execution because he felt he owed it to the jurors
who tried the case and all the victims and
families of the other persons Walker killed.
He served on both the Trial and Appellate divisions of the Court of the Judiciary.
He was a loyal and dedicated Freemason,
receiving a 50-year recognition in 2010. He
was a Past Master of Rock Masonic Lodge
