born on August 7, 1924 in
Sawyer, Oklahoma. He
later moved to Tulsa
where he met and married Mary Edith Benson.
Their union produced
four daughters, Pat Holland, Leanne Carl, Debra
Crandall, and Cindy Epp;
12 grandchildren and
14 great-grandchildren.
Cleo and Mary were married for 63 years until
Mary’s passing in 2009.
Cleo worked as a salesman and sales manager for the Fred Jones
Automotive Group for
more than 30 years beginning in the 1960’s.
A longtime member
of Sandusky Avenue
Christian Church, at
the time of his death he
was attending Cedar
Ridge Christian Church.
On Valentine’s Day 2011,
he married Mary Jean
Casteel. He led an active
life of dancing, golf and
travel, even shooting his
age in golf this past April.
Following a brief illness,
Cleo passed from this life
at home on October 9, 2013,
surrounded by family.
In addition to his wife,
children, and grandchildren, he is survived by
his sister, Marie Brooks.

Cherokee Nation seeks military Chickasaw Nation to host forum
memorabilia for veterans center on native humanities and history
TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee Nation oficials are seeking donations of military
memorabilia from tribal members for
display at the Cherokee Nation Veterans
Center that is to open in Tahlequah.
Plans call for displaying uniforms,
military gear and equipment, lags,
videos, recordings, unit insignia, diaries,
personal messages, photographs, military maps and charts, books and histories of personal or unit service, dog tags,
medals, and service-related documents,
newspapers, books, and records.
The 7,700-square-foot Veterans
Center will house veteran assistance and
beneits oices, a kitchen, a community room, a library and a museum. The
entrance will feature a “Wall of Honor”
of Cherokee veterans.

ADA — The Chickasaw Nation is
planning the third annual “Carry the
Fire” Native Humanities Forum at the
tribe’s complex in Ada.
The Oct. 24 forum will feature a panel
of four scholars and is considered an
opportunity for dialogue among native
and non-native people.
The subject will be native humanities
and the development and welfare of
local communities and the state.
Basic tenets of the humanities,
historic contributions of native and
non-native humanities, important
current initiatives and cross-cultural
understanding and cooperation will be
discussed.
The program is free and open to the
public.

Springfield zookeeper killed by elephant
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A
longtime zookeeper in southwest
Missouri was killed Friday morning when he was hit by an elephant, a spokeswoman for the city
of Springield said.
John Bradford, 62, was fatally
injured when an elephant made a
sudden movement inside the area
at the Dickerson Park Zoo where
the elephants are housed, city
spokeswoman Cora Scott said.
No other zoo employees were
injured.
The elephant, a 41-year-old female named Patience, has been at
the zoo since 1990, according to oficials for the Springield zoo.
Bradford worked at the zoo for
30 years and had been the zoo’s elephant manager for 25 years.
“It’s an extremely sad time for
the co-workers at the zoo and at
the city,” Scott said.
Several employees were with
Bradford at the time because Patience had a history of being aggressive, she said.
City oicials initially said Patience had charged the zookeeper,
based on early reports from the
scene, but they later clariied that
account, saying only that the elephant made a sudden movement
and hit him.
The zoo has two female and two
male elephants.
Scott said in a news release that
zookeepers had been keeping a
close eye on the female elephants
since the death earlier this month
of the zoo’s matriarch elephant,
Connie.
Paul Price, a longtime friend and
former co-worker of Bradford’s,
told the Springield News-Leader
that elephants were Bradford’s
passion.
“He had a great deal of respect
and love for them and cared about
the conservation,” Price said.
“He was always aware of dangers and everything and was instrumental in developing the elephant management program at
the zoo at the national and international levels,” he added.
Zoo oicials said Patience won’t
be euthanized and that no disciplinary action will be taken against
her. The zoo opened as usual
Friday, although the elephants
weren’t on exhibit.
The zoo notiied the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums about Bradford’s death.
“This is very sad day for the zoo
family, as well as our community
as a whole,” said Mike Crocker,
assistant parks director and zoo
director.
