The Greater Escape - Jared Kushner’s Family Story
Jared Kushner – President Donald Trump’s son-in-law – has a story to tell. And it’s
one of the greatest stories of survival amidst the tragedy of the Shoah. It is the story
of his grandmother’s escape from a Nazi labor camp through a 200-yard tunnel in the
town of Novogrudok into the great forests of Belarus where she lived, fought and
survived as a Jewish partisan in the famous Bielski Brigade. Rae Kushner (that was
her maiden name) was selected together with 500 Jews, the remnants from over
6000 Jews from the town and its environs, to work in a camp on the edge of the
town. Faced with immanent death, the surviving 220 decided to attempt a mass
escape. For five months, they desperately dug a tunnel dispersing the soil behind
walls, in cisterns, and in the attics and supporting the tunnel with wood from beds
and scrounged from the workshops. In September 1943 the entire camp escaped. All
this is recorded in the remarkable documentary film “Tunnel of Hope” (2015) directed
by Dror Shwartz and supported by Jared’s uncle Murray Kushner. The film depicts
the search for the tunnel by the children and grandchildren of the escapees. A
reconstruction of the barracks clearly shows the bunk where Jared’s grandmother
and her family slept. Charles Kushner, Jared’s father, is involved in the construction
of a peace and tolerance garden and memorial on the site of the tunnel.
Survival and defiance, has been and still is, a major motivator in the lives of the

‫יחד עם ‪ 500‬יהודים‪ ,‬שרידי ביותר מ ‪ 6000-‬יהודים מהעיר וסביבותיה‪ ,‬לעבוד במחנה על קצה של‬
‫העיר‪ .‬נוכח סכנה של מוות אימננטי‪ ,‬ששרדו ‪ 220‬החליטו ניסיונות בריחה המונית‪ .‬במשך חמישה‬
‫חודשים‪ ,‬הם חפרו מנהרה נואשות לפזר את הקרקע מאחורי חומות‪ ,‬בבורות‪ ,‬ובסופו של עליות גג‬
‫ותמיכה המנהרה עם עץ ממיטות משתה מפח הסדנאות‪ .‬בספטמבר ‪ 1943‬במחנה כולו ברח‪ .‬כל זה‬
‫נרשם בסרט תיעודי מדהים "מנהרת התקווה" (‪ )2015‬בבימויו של דרור שוורץ ונתמכת על ידי דודו‬
‫של ג'ארד קושנר מוריי‪ .‬הסרט מתאר את החיפוש אחר במנהרה ליד הילדים והנכדים של הנמלטים‪.‬‬
‫שחזור של הצריפים מראה בבירור את קומותיים שם הסבתא של ג'ארד ומשפחתה ישנו‪ .‬צ'רלס‬
‫קושנר‪ ,‬אביו של ג'ארד‪ ,‬הוא מעורב בבניית גן שלום וסובלנות זיכרון באתר של המנהרה‪.‬‬
